DARK UNIVERSE Will Include Reboots Of PHANTOM OF THE OPERA And THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME

It's now been confirmed that Universal's Dark Universe will also feature new incarnations of classic horror properties, The Hunchback of Notre Dame and The Phantom of The Opera. More past the jump.

As we know, Universal's burgeoning Dark Universe will kick-off with The Mummy, and continue with The Bride of Frankenstein, The Invisible Man, The Creature from The Black Lagoon, and most likely The Wolfman. That's a pretty packed schedule as is, but The Mummy director Alex Kurtzman has now confirmed that even more monster reboots are planned.

During an interview with Fandom, Kurtzman revealed that Dracula, Phantom of the Opera and Hunchback of Notre Dame are also in the works. While we assumed the lord of the vampires would be revisited as some point, the other two are surprises. A modern retelling of Phantom could work quite well, but I'm not sure about The Hunchback!

The director also mentioned some of the actors he'd most like to see nab these roles:

“I’d love to bring Michael Fassbender in, I’d love to bring Jennifer Lawrence in, I’d love to see Charlize Theron in there, Angelina Jolie…”

Ambitious, but they already have quite a bit of star-power as is, and if The Mummy is a success there's no reason to think that this impressive roster of talent won't continue to grow.

What do you guys think of this news? Sound off below.

I think 'Dark Universe' will die soon...

What do you guys think?

@RagnarGolem - The name or the universe itself?

@MUTO123 - The universe. I think 'The Mummy' will flop.
MUTO123
MUTO123 - 6/5/2017, 5:45 PM
@RagnarGolem - It could. They probably shouldn't have sandwiched it between Wonder Woman and Cars 3.

@MUTO123 - And the movie looks very generic to start a universe.

@RagnarGolem - And the fact that the embargo apparently doesn't lift until Thursday is concerning too.

@MUTO123 - Yes. Very much. :/

@RagnarGolem - completely agreed. I can't see this being a sustainable universe for more than 1 movie per monster. Unless they hire a brilliant writer who cracks a story that has us begging for multiple sequels and crossovers, this kinda feels like a one and done for each. but who knows.

@RagnarGolem - the budget is $125 million so it needs about $350-400 million world wide. I think if reviews are decent it can get there. If it does over $300 million Im sure they will still make the next 1 or 2 in the franchise just because they already have so much invested in terms of casting, scripts and shooting dates. I hope it works out!

@RagnarGolem - agreed, sadly i think it does have potential, but not with kurtzman and orci at the helm

@RagnarGolem - Directors gonna give himself a stroke thinking like this. Dude, calm down and focus on making a good movie.

@Ryguy88 - $125 million!? That's pretty reasonable. I expected it to come in somewhere in the ballpark of $200 million.

@ConnorHawkeye - I don't think Orci has anything to do with The Mummy. That leaves you with Kurtzman, but as far as I am concerned Orci was the worse one.

@RagnarGolem - Yes.

I think Universal's getting waaaayyy ahead of themselves right now. Let's see how things play out this weekend.

@RagnarGolem - If I may play the Devil's Advocate here, we all said that Iron Man looked pretty generic when the trailers came out. Yet we all know where that lead to. Sure it had a poor placement for release (though since Cars 2 flopped I don't think that's a threat, just WW) but in terms of quality we can only wait.

Also, all of you guys are thinking about this as if the plan is to have the same sort of thing as the MCU where it's solo movies leading to a team up. But so far it seems to be pretty close to the original monster universe, wherein you have one monster or multiple appear in the adventures of another. Remember, this is also the introduction of Dr. Jekyl. It's possible we may see Tom's character appear in Bride of Frankenstein, Frankenstein appear in Black Lagoon, the creature appear in Invisible Man, etc. Again, not saying anything definitive but that's my thought.

@Origame - Well, Devil's Advocate, you may can say it now, but In 2008? Sorry, but you're wrong. Iron Man wasn't generic at all.

@RagnarGolem - It'll make a ton of money overseas, and that will be enough for more. Calling it now.
Termin8er
Termin8er - 6/6/2017, 8:28 AM
@Origame - Well said. I suspect they'll do it similarly yet differently than Marvel. Only time will tell.
Termin8er
Termin8er - 6/6/2017, 8:29 AM
@RagnarGolem - I mean that's a pretty generic trailer. Not the movie, just the trailer.
Origame
Origame - 6/6/2017, 8:45 AM
@RagnarGolem - I'm talking about the impression it had prior to release. Most people saw it as no different than any other superhero out there. Yet it TURNED OUT to be amazing.
Origame
Origame - 6/6/2017, 8:47 AM
@Termin8er - Yeah. Time will tell. Honestly I just hope that the universe trend Marvel started doesn't ruin blockbusters in general as just a giant collection of movies you need to see all of in order to understand what's going on, and making sure you know which film is in which universe.
