Ror Reviews: THE CABIN IN THE WOODS

Is Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard's highly acclaimed horror/comedy worthy of the hype? Click for my take on the mysterious The Cabin In The Woods starring Chris Hemsworth. It's spoiler free, pretty much!..

The Cabin In The Woods is a very difficult movie to review, because to discuss its positives or negatives in any real detail would give too much away. Honestly, even that trailer was too much. This movie works best when you know as little as possible about it. All you need to know about the story is this: Five high school pals take a trip to a creepy cabin, where all manner of weird shit happens to them. Now, go see it! Ok, obviously I can't leave it at that so I'll proceed without dropping anything too spoilerific, but if you want to know absolutely nothing about the film probably best to skip this.

Right from the get-go Cabin plays with our expectations with a very strange and quite funny opening credits scene. From there we meet our protagonists. Think every horror character cliche imaginable - the jock, the slut, the sensitive hero type, the stoner comic relief and the virginal hottie. This is of course absolutely ridiculous, and of course absolutely the point. Producer/co-writer Joss Whedon and director Drew Goddard are pulling a Scream see, toying with genre conventions. So when our heroes go to stay in a run down cabin for the weekend, by way of a toothless old tobacco spitting lunatic, we roll our eyes safe in the knowledge that that's exactly what they want us to do. This works pretty well, for the most part. The characters are all likable enough despite being cardboard cutouts, and the actors do their best to add dimensions to roles that aren't really supposed to have any! I can imagine it was hard to pull off actually so I'll go easier on em than I normally would, but aside from Fran Kranz as Marty, the seemingly paranoid stoner of the group, nobody really shines. Chris Hemsworth is fine, though he's landed with a few of the most awful lines (yes, supposed to be awful is still ..awful!). Kristen Connolly is also ok as Dana , but never really convinces. A stronger female lead would have helped matters a lot I think. But this one isn't about great performances, so here's the part where those who want to remain completely in the dark may want to stop reading..

Still here? Ok, so this movie goes to some absolutely insane places. I mean really, unexpectedly, awesomely, bonkers. It's different and a bit off the wall right the way through - thanks to a side-plot involving the ever brilliant Richard Jenkins which I won't go into - but only towards the end does it really shake things up, and offers up some very smart and shocking revelations and insights into the mythology behind the story. Trust me, although the trailer gives away a bit more than it should, it doesn't even scratch the surface of the gory delights awaiting you. The thing is, as great as this is and as much as horror fans will lap it up, the movie is never really scary as such. It's tense and exciting in places, but truly frightening or unnerving? Nope. Now this is due mainly to the fact that at its heart, Cabin In The Woods is a comedy. I've read that Whedon and Goddard want us to embrace this is horror first and foremost, with some comedic elements - but take my word for it, it's not. This movie is frackin hilarious, frequently. Which is a good thing, but if you are going to inject so much humor into your movie and still expect people to take it very seriously you're fighting a losing battle. Scenes of explicit gore and brutality are immediately followed by a witty one liner or sight gag, which is great fun but ensures we are never really disturbed by anything that's going on. Whedon and Goddard have packed this film with nods and homages to other horror movies, directors, characters..like I said, fans will have a blast, they probably just won't be grabbing hold of their partners arm.

I wish I could go into more detail, it would be great fun to discuss some of the things that pop up in this one. It's slightly too silly to be scary, and I'm not sure it quite warrants the "game changer" tag it's received from some critics (though I've certainly never seen anything like it before I'll give it that), but a five star premise backed up by a four star movie is still something everyone should go see. Highly recommended.

Every review I've read about this movie has been its insane and Joss has created something out of this world, but It's gonna be tough between this Lockout, and The Three Stooges.

It works great as a comedy and decently as a horror film. My 2 biggest complaints are 1) Not just making the stoner the hero but weed as the super power. I think its irresponsible to make any illegal substance not just a good thing but a saving grace. And if weed really were the stoner's key strength, where were the negative side effects? I really think that is irresponsible. 2) What a clever and unique ending! Except its "suck" factor outweighs its cleverness. Its not a satisfactory conclusion and makes the entire journey of the film pointless. I enjoyed the humor, the light-heartedness, and the originality of the film's story. It was well acted and well paced in content. I just feel its weaknesses make the film unworthy of the hype.

@Tea There are boobs. Not big ones but they're there.

Weed IS a good thing and a saving grace, not everything is illegal for good reason:) Really though, it was a joke in the movie, I wouldn't take it so seriously.

Tea, as Marxman says, there are indeed boobs, and they do indeed belong to the blond hottie.

@MrAnderson totally agree with you! The dialogue was what helped make this movie great. I think people fail to see the satire in the weed as a super power thing. :p

I saw it yesterday and I was blown away, it was literally the best horror movie I've seen in years. I'm actually thinking about seeing it again. Believe the hype.

Nice review! I think they were in college though.

It felt like an episode of Buffy to me. It had your typical Joss style to it. The ending was awesome and it was a good twist from the norm in terms of your standard sci fi/horror teen flick.

Bradley Whitford and richard Jenkins were funny as hell and Amy Ackers character was almost pointless. Nice camio from Tom Lenk from the Buffyverse too!

My only problem really was the stoner kid who I feel overly accented his "stoner" voice. He started to annoy me and I was waiting for him to just die already.

I'd give it a 7/10.

@ROR- I think you kind of missed the point of the character introduction scene. The characters were not cliches, Hemsworth was not just the quarterback, he was a sociology major giving advice on how to learn the subject matter better; Kristin Connoly is not an unspoiled virgin, she just got dumped by her college professor, the nerd is not just a nerd he is great football player, etc.

It is kind of important to the story, although it did not lead to the payoff that I expected.

I read the synopsis on wikipedia this morn and I told my wife that we had to see it.. After seeing it I have to say that we thoroughly enjoyed it. I know if I would not had read the plot I would have been like 99% of the theater at the end.. "DAMN" and "HOLY $H1T" were the reactions from the crowd. It was a different take on normal horror movies that is for sure. 4.5 out of 5 stars from me.

What is so great about the movie is that it puts itself in the same universe as every other movie in its sub-genre, even many that are out of its sub-genre.

Does anyone know which specific 1998 movie it is referencing?

I thought it was a 1998 "The Cabin in the Woods", but that doesn't seem to exist, so it seems that it is either "The Cabin" or "Cabin Fever".

My main point is that the pay off at the end was sloppy and could have been a lot better. [SPOILER]
I am getting real tired of horror movies where the entire cast is killed. What is the point of investing 2 hours and ($10+) on characters that just end up dying purposelessly?
Listen, CITWs is a very fun flick but I just want to be honest about the problems with this film. Actually, (self-revelation) I think the problems are more with the genre than the actual film.

This film was great!! Really drip fed you the real story slowly and the realisation toward the end was phenominal. Not quite sure what I thought about the end (selfish or what!?) but really loved how the character weren't really those stereotypes, they were made into them as part of the thing, absolutely loved it.

The movie is a better comedy than anything else it tries to be. Bradley Whitford and Richard Jenkins' dialogue is by far the best part of the entire movie. It's not a bad movie, but there are few things more annoying than when a movie tries too hard to be clever. The ending is just one genre tacked on to the end of another genre, and there's nothing game-changing about that despite what the majority of the reviews have claimed. From Dusk Til Dawn did the same thing 15-16 years ago in a much better fashion. It's a fun flick, but don't get your hopes up about some "game-changing" movie like most are claiming.

It's funny when people say the film was bad, then explain why making it plainly evident that they did not understand what was going on at all.

I think Joss Whedon could make a pretty awesome TV show about the facility.
