SCREAM Star Neve Campbell Would Return As Sidney Prescott Under "The Right Circumstances"

Scream icon Neve Campbell is not ruling out a return to the classic slasher franchise.

The actress reprised the role of Sidney Prescott for the fifth movie, but decided to drop out of the recent Scream VI because of a pay dispute. The film was still very successful, but Sidney was definitely missed by long-time fans.

Despite her issues with the studio, Campbell tells Variety that she would consider stepping back into her most famous role given "the right circumstances" during the BAFTA Tea event at the Maybourne hotel in Beverly Hills.

“Given the right circumstances? Yes. I made a statement several years ago, and it was the reason that I didn’t do the film at the time, and I just really felt the need to stand up and say that I don’t believe I would’ve been treated that way had I been a man carrying a franchise for 25 years, and that still stands. So if they were to choose to come back to me, that would continue to be my takeaway. We’ll see.”

“I honestly have no idea what their plans are,” she continued. “I know a lot has gone on around it and I’m sure they’re spinning a little bit at the moment. These movies mean a lot to us and they mean a lot to the fans. I go to these conventions sometimes and I meet the fans and they’re frantic about these films. They love them. These films mean a lot to them and these characters mean a lot to them. So even for their sake, I would love to see it continue.”

Right now, we're not even sure that the seventh Scream movie will move forward.

Star Melissa Barrera was fired for sharing "anti-Semitic" comments on social media, with Spyglass Entertainment releasing a statement explaining why they decided to drop her from the film shortly after, citing "rhetoric that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech." We'd later learn that Jenna Ortega had also parted ways with the horror sequel, but actually left the project some time before Barrera's firing.

More recently, director Christopher Landon also stepped away.

“I guess now is as good a time as any to announce I formally exited Scream 7 weeks ago," the filmmaker wrote on Twitter. "This will disappoint some and delight others. It was a dream job that turned into a nightmare. And my heart did break for everyone involved. Everyone. But it’s time to move on.” “I have nothing more to add to the conversation other than I hope Wes’ legacy thrives and lifts above the din of a divided world. What he and Kevin created is something amazing and I was honored to have even the briefest moment basking in their glow.”

What happens next is unclear, but according to THR, "the future of Scream VII rests on James Vanderbilt, the writer-producer who co-wrote the rebooted movies and who is writing the current script. Sources say that the scribe, who was already contending with Ortega’s loss, had been focusing the story on Barrera’s character."

We're sure a version of Scream VII will see the light of day at some point, but it's probably in the studio's best interests to start making some phone calls.

@Moriakum - That's actually a good premise. "STAB: The Documentary has begun filming and Sydney Prescott and other survivors of the Woodsboro Massacre and other isolated events have agreed to do interviews. But when a "Ghost face" killer emerges and begins to stalk the cast and crew involved in the documentary it sets off a high stakes effort for survival as questions arise if this is a stunt for footage of a legitimate killer on the loose"

@SonOfAGif - Scream was one of the first movies I saw in the theater in 96 when I was only 13 and I shouldn’t have been there. I’ve loved the franchise except I wasn’t big on these last two installments.

Your idea is absolutely brilliant and Dreamworks should fly you out and get you to figure this out, because it’s great.

@kg8817 - Thanks, I appreciate it. I had an idea for a new trilogy set within the "Documentary timeline" of how my head canon has it. Where the killer doesn't die. So it would be the same killer in all three films of the new trilogy and each film tackles a specific trope in society such as the first film being a knock at how companies will make a documentary about anything. The second being about how society will turn tragedy into comedy and show absolutely no remorse. And the third tackling PTSD and the lasting effects of how the court of public opinion can hurt someone.

As someone who didn't like the last 2 films and hated all the new characters, get Sid and Gale back along with Stu and finally do the cult thing that the last film baited us with in their trailers.

Kick Vanderbilt off the project.

That would be a start.

I've posted this before and I know a lot of you are going to bash me (again) over this, but I think it'd be the greatest thing ever if Sydney ends up being the killer in the 7th film. Come full circle with the franchise.
Last time I posted this people told me that would ruin the history of the franchise and would mess up the heroinism of the female lead of a horror franchise. I say, turn horror movie tropes on its head and zig while others are zagging.
Neve isn't in much of the film but is greatly referenced throughout the movie. Then, on the 3rd act/final part, she reveals herself from behind the mask. She finally snapped after all the stuff she's been through, including her husband leaving her and she is in financial ruin.

Ok, try not to be too mean when you all trash me.

@lazlodaytona - great idea, but its also too obvious to have sidney be the killer. die hard fans might see it as a cheap 'twist'... have courtney cox e a killer with her cameraman. the news is dying down she wants another book deal or movie payday and is like fine ill do it myself...

"turn horror movie tropes on its head and zig while others are zagging."

Sounds like the lamest, hackiest shit ever.

Just do a film without Sidney and Sam and Woodborrow.

THAT is doing something new.

Yeah, what did I actually write?

"Just do a film without Sidney and Sam and Woodborrow."

Did you see SAM at all?

Sam is connected to Sidney and Woodsboro.

Ignore Sidney, Woodsboro AND Sam for the next one so the next director has a clean slate and doesn't have to tie it back to "Sam's third cousin who is also Sidney's former yoga teacher wants revenge because blah, blah, blah".

lazlodaytona - 1/16/2024, 3:54 AM
@Ginley - They kinda already did that; except on the small screen.

Did you ever happen to see MTV's Scream series? The 1st and 2nd seasons are actually quite good and interesting. The 3rd season is garbage, but the show is well worth a try.

The Scream movies have become so outright silly that they could easily add a supernatural twist and nobody would bat an eyelid. I mean most of the main characters are immortal anyway.
Arthorious
Arthorious - 1/15/2024, 1:35 PM
@MarkCassidy - you’re not wrong about that. I get that this franchise was also a light parody to the stalker killer trope but now they have become what they once mocked.

The only slightly interesting angle that they haven’t done yet would be if the killer was recreating various kills from a bunch of different famous horror movies.

The whole meta/self referential schtick has gotten old at this point and I’ve never really liked the whole Stab movie series being such a plot point in many of the newer films. They need to move past that in this next one.

I do have to admit though, Scream might be one of, if not the best horror film series(I’m not a fan of the Saw movies fyi) from a sheer quantity and entertainment standpoint. They’re not amazing films or even scary but they’re like the Fast and the Furious of horror movies. You watch and rewatch them and be entertained in way that you can’t with most horror movies.

I think might have something to do with the fact that a large portion of each film typically will take place during the daytime so it doesn’t feel like you’re watching a horror film.

"I’ve never really liked the whole Stab movie series being such a plot point in many of the newer films."

Except it hasn't.

Only the third film made something of that concept (and the backstage shenanigans were the best part of the film).

They should shitcan the hopeless Vanderbilt (whose "Zodiac" screenplay seems more and more the work of Fincher's guidance), ignore Sam and just do a serial killer film in Hollywood.

The is being there really is no way to measure that. As far as I know, there are no horror/slasher/thriller movie franchises with long running male heroic protagonists. This has to be taken into account as well, to me, that there is nothing to compare these situations to, from what I know, so, if so, it's all just assumptions on her part in why she was paid whatever. I wouldn't know, because I haven't seen this stuff.

"there are no horror/slasher/thriller movie franchises with long running male heroic protagonists"

Hopkins in "Hannibal". Robert England in "Elm Street".

Oh wait, they are not HEROES. THEY NEED TO BE HEROES.

Umm, why?

Enough with the moving of goalposts.

The point is that these people are the FACES OF THESE BRANDS.

Same with Neve Campbell.

And the last two films were HORRIBLE and the bad actress who toplined them is a nut.

Just give Campbell what she's owed and stop messing around.
dagenspear
dagenspear - 1/15/2024, 4:33 PM
@Ginley - I do think there's a distinct difference between villains and heroes and how they're used.

Sidney (even if she's the most important character) isn't the face of the brand. Ghostface is. It's not moving anything to say that. That's the horror visual. Like Hannibal (which is more direct thriller than horror, and horror doesn't have as much respect for it if I understand it correctly) and Freddy Krueger. I didn't argue against paying the actress what she wants or for the new movies, which has nothing to do with the actress.

LORD willing, insulting isn't right.

"Ghostface is. It's not moving anything to say that."

And the character is so important that you can replace him a dozen times within a single film and it wouldn't make a difference.

The actor means nothing.

It's hilarious how Paramount [frick]ed this up so bad. I'm not gonna cite a riot here but sometimes you need to just let people say what they want. So I guess they'll use this backup plan, where they could have used her in the last movie if they paid her. That's like choosing not to bring back Luke Skywalker, oh wait lol. I hated the last movie so I couldn't care less

"It's hilarious how Paramount [frick]ed this up so bad"

Paramount is just paid a distribution fee.

Spyglass owns the franchise.

Spyglass could take the next film to any other studio and Paramount could not do anything about it i.e. Paramount has nothing to do with the situation and you have no idea what you're talking about.
