Scream VI is now in theaters (you can check out our review here), which means it's going to become a lot more difficult to avoid spoilers.
Whether you've seen the movie already and fancy a recap of the major events, or simply want to know what to expect before going in, we've got you covered.
Final spoiler warning!
The sixth Scream movie gets off to a strong start with a clever twist on the usual opening Ghostface kill, as a film studies teacher, Laura (Samara Weaving), is stalked and sliced by one of her students, Jason (Tony Revolori). This time, however, the killer unmasks immediately after, and we follow Jason home to his apartment where he is murdered by this movie's actual Ghostface.
We then catch up with the survivors of the last movie, Sam (Melissa Barrera), Mindy (Jasmin Savoy Brown), Chad (Mason Gooding), and Tara (Jenna Ortega), in college after relocating to New York City in an attempt to put their horrific ordeal behind them. When the Ghostface killings start up again, they enlist the help of Scream 4's Kirby Reed (Hayden Panettiere), who is now an FBI Agent (obviously), and franchise OG Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox).
Of course, there's also the usual disposable new friends and/or (potential) Ghostfaces/victims: Nerdy virgin Ethan (Jack Champion), promiscuous roommate Quinn (Liana Liberato), Mindy's love-interest Anika (Devyn Nekoda), and Sam's "hot guy" neighbour Danny (Josh Segarra).
The gang gets some backup from Quinn's father Wayne (Dermot Mulroney), who happens to be a cop... and one of the Ghostfaces.
Yeah, let's just jump right in here.
Even though Quinn is seemingly killed in an early attack (that also results in the death of Anika in arguably the movie's most intense sequence), it's later revealed that Wayne and Ethan - who's actually Quinn's brother - staged the whole thing to throw everyone off the trail. These three Ghostfaces want revenge on Sam for killing - wait for it - Wayne's other son, Ritchie Jack Quaid), who was Sam's boyfriend and the last movie's main Ghostface.
The villains all explain their motivations in a series of increasingly manic outbursts before being picked off one by one. Sam dons the Ghostface mask to dispatch Wayne, and seems to enjoy it just a little too much. Outside, we get a little tease that she may become the next killer, but she ultimately decides to drop her father's old mask on the ground and walk away.
There is a post-credits scene, but it's just Mindy telling the audience that not every movie needs a post-credits scene.
Kill count: Five Ghostfaces (counting Jason and his roommate), Laura, Anika, and Sam's therapist.
Stab count: Everyone.
Though no main characters die, most of them are stabbed, shot, bludgeoned, and otherwise physically traumatized to the point that it soon becomes more than a little hard to buy that they're still breathing. Mindy is knifed several times in the guts on the subway and acts like she's had the wind knocked out of her. Later, Gale is repeatedly stabbed and impaled with a very large shard of glass. She gets a "death scene," but wouldn't ya know it, the medics find a pulse.
Then, towards the end, Chad is taken down in a flurry of stabbings by two Ghostfaces. Like, they plunge blades into every part of this kid's anatomy... and he's taken out on a stretcher at the end.
They clearly wanted to keep the "core four" around for the long haul, which is understandable, but they really need to ease up on the plot armour next time.
