SCREAM VI Spoilers: Who Lives, Who Dies, And Who's Beneath Ghostface's Mask This Time?

Scream VI is now in theaters (you can check out our review here), which means it's going to become a lot more difficult to avoid spoilers.

Whether you've seen the movie already and fancy a recap of the major events, or simply want to know what to expect before going in, we've got you covered.

Final spoiler warning!

The sixth Scream movie gets off to a strong start with a clever twist on the usual opening Ghostface kill, as a film studies teacher, Laura (Samara Weaving), is stalked and sliced by one of her students, Jason (Tony Revolori). This time, however, the killer unmasks immediately after, and we follow Jason home to his apartment where he is murdered by this movie's actual Ghostface.

We then catch up with the survivors of the last movie, Sam (Melissa Barrera), Mindy (Jasmin Savoy Brown), Chad (Mason Gooding), and Tara (Jenna Ortega), in college after relocating to New York City in an attempt to put their horrific ordeal behind them. When the Ghostface killings start up again, they enlist the help of Scream 4's Kirby Reed (Hayden Panettiere), who is now an FBI Agent (obviously), and franchise OG Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox).

Of course, there's also the usual disposable new friends and/or (potential) Ghostfaces/victims: Nerdy virgin Ethan (Jack Champion), promiscuous roommate Quinn (Liana Liberato), Mindy's love-interest Anika (Devyn Nekoda), and Sam's "hot guy" neighbour Danny (Josh Segarra).

The gang gets some backup from Quinn's father Wayne (Dermot Mulroney), who happens to be a cop... and one of the Ghostfaces.

Yeah, let's just jump right in here.

Even though Quinn is seemingly killed in an early attack (that also results in the death of Anika in arguably the movie's most intense sequence), it's later revealed that Wayne and Ethan - who's actually Quinn's brother - staged the whole thing to throw everyone off the trail. These three Ghostfaces want revenge on Sam for killing - wait for it - Wayne's other son, Ritchie Jack Quaid), who was Sam's boyfriend and the last movie's main Ghostface.

The villains all explain their motivations in a series of increasingly manic outbursts before being picked off one by one. Sam dons the Ghostface mask to dispatch Wayne, and seems to enjoy it just a little too much. Outside, we get a little tease that she may become the next killer, but she ultimately decides to drop her father's old mask on the ground and walk away.

There is a post-credits scene, but it's just Mindy telling the audience that not every movie needs a post-credits scene.

Kill count: Five Ghostfaces (counting Jason and his roommate), Laura, Anika, and Sam's therapist.

Stab count: Everyone.

Though no main characters die, most of them are stabbed, shot, bludgeoned, and otherwise physically traumatized to the point that it soon becomes more than a little hard to buy that they're still breathing. Mindy is knifed several times in the guts on the subway and acts like she's had the wind knocked out of her. Later, Gale is repeatedly stabbed and impaled with a very large shard of glass. She gets a "death scene," but wouldn't ya know it, the medics find a pulse.

Then, towards the end, Chad is taken down in a flurry of stabbings by two Ghostfaces. Like, they plunge blades into every part of this kid's anatomy... and he's taken out on a stretcher at the end.

They clearly wanted to keep the "core four" around for the long haul, which is understandable, but they really need to ease up on the plot armour next time.

Great time in the theater for this one. Although I hated the fake out deaths of the main cast. irked me a bit

My one small gripe with the film is they were too merciful on the cast. At least one of the core four shouldn’t have made it to the end. Then Gale and Kirby both survived, as well as Josh Segarra’s character. Other than that, I found it to be a thoroughly enjoyable and tense film. The cast was excellent, the stabbing were brutal, and Ghostface was as menacing as ever.

@LeonNova - I saw the cop father as Ghostface the minute he was introduced. But the twist that there were two more killers had me shook. I thought they should've killed off Gale, it would've been a nice send off for her. At least she put up more of a fight than her muscle-bound boyfriend lol!

This was better than it had any business being. This and Creed III are my top films of the year.

How did we get 3 (technically 5) killers yet with the lowest body count of the series?

We had more Ghostface deaths then Ghostface victims.

@Origame - I think they are not counting the people GF kills in that bodega. I think the issue is that main characters deaths were low because they didn't commit to some deaths that undermines the Sense of the things.

I dont have problem with Chad being alive because he could be the new Dewey, but it would have been really tragic AND great, but at less Gale, Kirby or Mindy should have stay Death.

@AleSir19 - I mean, in that case it's just the two Bodega customers, the teacher, and the girlfriend. That's it for non Ghostface deaths. They killed 4 people but 5 of them died.

Gave the Fake out deaths in scream 5 a pass but now I'm realizing they're clearly setting up Chad & his sister to be the "Dewey" of the franchise in terms of plot armor.

@TheRealMandarin - Mindy only really got stabbed 2-3 times so it's kinda understandable to see how she survived. Chad though I'm VERY surprised that he survived.
I can definitely see them properly killing off one or both of them in the next film though.

The writers deciding which characters got to live:

Still processing my thoughts on this one. T

hey basically revealed the killer in the trailer. I was hoping it would be a fakeout, but everytime he's on screen, it became more and more obvious, to the point where it couldn't conceivably be anyone else by the third act. Was genuinely surprised about his daughter, though.

I didn't care for the three killers angle. Unless they were going Cult of Ghostface (which I thought they might from the opening), three killers just seems like overkill and less personal.

Gale should have died. I think if Sidney had been in the movie, Gale would have got got, but they need to assure one legacy character for number 7.

Sidney's presence was definitely missed. It's not really Scream without her.

I liked Sam more in this one than in 5. Actually, all of the "Core four" were better in this one, characterization-wise.

Mindy should have died in Randy fashion. I liked the idea of Chad evolving into more of a Jock-Randy hybrid. Having Chad and Mindy both is a bit low-stakes and a missed opportunity for character development.

As of right now, this one ranks in the lower half of the franchise for me, but higher than number four.

I think a much more interesting story would have been to have the killer be completely unaffiliated with Richie or any of the past killers or victims. Have the whole movie be about the different characters trying to figure it out and turning on one another, but ultimately the killer is a complete random psychopath who was just starting to get into horror (play up the meta angle of a new horror fan discovering the genre for the first time). So the new killer starts playing on the most popular tropes from the most accessible horror movies, and maybe even gets criticised by Mindy for thinking x movie is a horror, when it's in fact a thriller (something like that). Could be a fun fresh way to handle it.

@SheepishOne - not to mention they kept bringing up better reveals. Imagine if they went all the way with gale or kirby (or both) being the killer. But instead we got the most boring reveal ever. Like everything about the killers was telegraphed so hard the only reason I ruled them out as killers was because they were red herrings.
99OPTIMISTPRIME
99OPTIMISTPRIME - 3/13/2023, 12:11 PM
@SheepishOne - Cult of Ghostface. If the franchise doesn't reboot, that might be the best direction to go in.
SheepishOne
SheepishOne - 3/13/2023, 12:49 PM
@Origame - Exactly my thoughts. Ghostface just keeps ruling suspects out on his own, until there's no one left. Kirby being a killer would have been interesting with the right setup.

I get they were trying to fake a red herring, but usually this franchise does it in a smarter way.

@99OPTIMISTPRIME - This would have been the perfect entry to do Cult of Ghostface, with the online radicalization, the shrine of evidence from the previous films, etc.

But I don't see them doing it now without it feeling a bit cheap.

My only gripe is Mindy should have died.

Like she was stabbed hard, then the OTHER GHOSTFACE calls for help instead of finishing her. No one was around.
