If you haven't heard of Nightbreed, it's Clive Barker's ambitious adaptation of his novel Cabal. It stars David Cronenberg as serial killing psychiatrist Dekker, and Craig Sheffer as his patient Boon, framed for his murders. Shot down by the cops, Boon is resurrected in the secret mythical city of Midian - "where the monsters go" - and joins its denizens as they defend the gates of the city against the "real monsters". It's a decent, underrated, but admittedly uneven movie, spawned from a far superior novel and Epic (remember them?) comic series. Apparently the film was drastically interfered with by its studio (they cut it down to under 90 minutes) and has always been the subject of controversy, and rabid fan speculation as to "what may have been". Now the full 145 minute "Cabal Cut" will screen for the very first time.

Here is the story of The Cabal Cut's journey to the screen..

“In 2009 Seraphim’s Mark Miller contacted Morgan Creek and found out that there may well be more to the Myth than anyone had thought. Two European encoded VHS tapes were discovered and sent to Phil and Sarah Stokes, who run Clive Barker’s website, Revelations. They viewed the tapes and saw what nobody had seen in almost 2 decades; additional Nightbreed footage. Phil and Sarah transferred the footage to DVD and, with Clive’s approval, announced to the world that missing footage for Clive’s film had been found. Inspired to see Clive’s original vision come to light, filmmaker Russell Cherrington, longtime friend of Clive Barker and Seraphim, took the DVD back to England and, working with editor Jimmi Johnson and Clive Barker’s original Script, created the new cut ofNightbreed composited from two the VHS sources and the original Warner Brothers DVD. The original cinema release of Nightbreed was fused with the workprint to create The Cabal Cut.”

My GOD... For years I've been trying to remember this movie from my childhood. All I could vaguely recall was some lady with spiky tits. It's such a relief to finally know what this movie is named again! Not going to watch it though, seems like shit now.

OMG!!!!!!!!!! This is the best news I've heard in quite some time. This is an awesome story (Cabal) and the movie version WAS totally screwed up by Hollywood execs who marketed the film as a "slasher movie" and didn't really know how to market it in the first place. The execs had never heard of such a premise "Monsters NOT the enemy" "MAN is the monster" and so on threw them for a loop! So many fans of Barker's and this story have been waiting for YEARS for an uncut version of this film. A year or two ago an issue of "Horrorhound" indicated that at one point, the uncut version was just around the corner but then movie politics again intervened and we were told that it would NEVER happen.

Sorry for the gushing but just never expected this.

@RacerREX-I had the same problem with Solomon Kane. Finally found an All-Region version that I purchased here in the states (a bootleg version by the looks of the box) from, ironically enough, Washington, DC. Anyways, the film itself was very high quality. Got it for 15.00. Was afraid it was going to be the Monster Squad type of bootleg where the quality of the film sucked. Pleasantly surprised that it was the exact opposite. Great film!! It's what the Conan the Barbarian remake SHOULD'VE been.

Actually Barker's stuff is way over the head of most movie goers so that's why they dumbed down this movie

Yeah, Bartman, I agree with you. Showtime was going to do WEAVEWORLD at one point and chickened out. That shit would have been epic.

I would love to see an adaptation of THE GREAT AND SECRET SHOW with Scott Bakula reprising his role of Harry D'amour from LORD OF ILLUSIONS.

@RacerREX, I don't mind sending you a sealed copy of Solomon Kane, it's only £5 here, not sure what shipping would be though and not sure if you'd need multiregion blu-ray

Loved the Great and Secret Show and Everville. Imajica rocked as well. I agree that Barker's stuff is way too heady for most people. It pushes all the boundaries and has no real concept of hero/villain unless it's subjective. The guy is a genius and making his books into movies that work would take a lot of effort. Would be better mini series.

imo we'd be better off if we got abarat first... maybe as a tv movie + single-season ongoing. it's really rich and dense, but its a little more visual AND less cerebral than his other work. it's got a female teen protagonist a la twilight & h-games, PLUS the whole narnia/oz alternate-reality setup is easy for the general audience to understand. BUT the characters, visuals and concept are genuine barker, so it's not like watery crap... it'd be a way to gain younger fans from across demographics and then if it does well they can start revisiting the adult novels.

Why is this VHS footage? Where is the originally filmed (un-aired) footage? Can't they make a special edition from that instead of poor quality VHS, unless it has been lost or something?

@RedMosquito

Russell Cherrington, a senior lecturer in film and video production at the University of Derby, created the composite cut of the film using the footage found on VHS tapes as well as the DVD.

The original Negatives of Nightbreed are still in the vaults of the studio.
