THE THING (2011): Unused Alien Pilot Concept Art & Creepy Transformation Sculptures

Much of the amazing concept art and creepily good transformation sculptures that you will see after the jump were not used in 2011's The Thing, as producers decided to use CGI instead of the practical effects created by the artists at Amalgamated Dynamics, Inc. (ADI).

Artist, Paul Komoda, uploaded concept art of the Juliette creature, Alien Pilot, and Griggs' transformation in the helicopter scene. The Alien Pilot is very interesting because the creature was meant to appear at the very end, but producers ditched it for a different conclusion.

"Basically that spaceship would have been originally crewed by an alien race which, as it was relayed to me, would have been on a planet to planet zoological expedition, collecting different creatures and storing them in these containment pods" - Paul Komoda

You'll find galleries from a couple of the sculptors on the project, Mikey Rotella and Casey Love. As a bonus, I also added Casey's images that document his time working with Rick Baker and his crew on Men In Black 3 alien designs. Enjoy!

PLOT - Antarctica: an extraordinary continent of awesome beauty. It is also home to an isolated outpost where a discovery full of scientific possibility becomes a mission of survival when an alien is unearthed by a crew of international scientists. The shape-shifting creature, accidentally unleashed at this marooned colony, has the ability to turn itself into a perfect replica of any living being. It can look just like you or me, but inside, it remains inhuman. In the thriller The Thing, paranoia spreads like an epidemic among a group of researchers as they’re infected, one by one, by a mystery from another planet.

THE THING (2011) was directed by Matthijs van Heijningen, from a script written by Ronald D. Moore and Eric Heisserer. The film starred: Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Ulrich Thomsen, Eric Christian Olsen, and Trond Espen Seim.

Practical effects is the way to go. Or a good balance of practical & CGI.

Glad they didn't show the alien full on, just in through ice and stuff. I like how they left it to the imagination. Bring on John Carpenter's THE THING 2!!

They should of gone with Amalgamated Dynamics. They did the great (again unused) Green Goblin FX.

The original was the best, something about it was very creepy and it felt very well.

That almost sounds like what the sequel(next or 3rd/4th film) to this ill-conceived, drugged up production butt-buggering that had the audacity to call itself a production and also slap the title "The Thing" on it, should've been about. This was a prequel right? BSG was Moore's fluke right? We're not quoting Reynolds as GL, right? Am I turning here.., which way man.., left or right?

The Thing(shouldn't even have to state, but ugh, the '82 version of the same name) was a mixture paranoia, good cinematic geography, realistic casting(no woman you'd care about would be cut off from society and surrounded by 10 men in the artic for 5 months out of the year, if so prove it to me filmmaker)and tone unlike any other. An anti-hero born out of reality and not just gruff for no reason.., we get subtleties from MacCready at many points throughout the film. Don't mess with '82's The Thing or you'll get more than the horns. I am kidding by the way.., but John Carpenter's The Thing is one of those unique gems. Love that one!

The practical effects in the '82 version are vastly superior to any CG we see today. I wish some of these would have made their way into the prequel.

It worked.., you win. The lighting alone is practically enough to make JC's THe THing worth it. A slow burn.., but one of the best ever! This film is easily on my top 5, genre or no. I love the balls it had.., hell half the cast almost went off a cliff en route to the location. Carpenter and Russell almost bit the dust in a chopper during a whiteout. If an insert was not furnished for your liking.., well my little buddy, the only LA studion shots in the film are obvious: "..cheatin' b!tch!"

"Cheatin' bitch!"

Past love and feelings resurfaced? A co-worker at the post? Something else? Good dialogue and character development with such a subtle stroke. Genius or accident.., it happened. Damn, I love that one.., watched it recently, otherwise I'd go throw that in.

@ollie

It was first reported that it would be a practical venture. :-| They needed bucks. John has been able to retire.., play music for a living with his son & play video games all day stoned. He's thankful for the unique life the old royalties have graced him.., but one day I'd love to hear him not be a nice guy(he's a total sweetheart)and just let go on all the douches from the past and present. Why does the art constantly change on all the new releases of the '82 film. Hmmm.

The director of 2011's The Thing was supposed to direct a sequel to 2004's DAWN OF THE DEAD called ARMY OF THE DEAD, but it got canceled. That sucks! Not to many zombie movies come out, and this sounds like it could have been awesome.

No matter what, the movie was never going to measure up to the original. And yes there was some things they should've done differently. But over all it didn't do bad. People seem to forget that this kind of movie has potential to be much Much worse than it was., I'm just happy that they stayed true to some of the parts that made the original one great.
The CG may not have looked very convincing, but that doesn't make it all bad, the animation of it was great, they should have just light it better or edit it in better.
I definitely give this movie credit on its hand made effects and puppetry, the work on that was amazing

Only took you two years? I'm kidding, go have the night off.., you deserve it. The Thing Prequel starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead(?) was.., sh!t. No.., it was sh!t. What did Carpenter have to say about it?

John Carpenter's The Thing is my favorite horror movie, and one of my favorite scifi movies. The prequel was... okay, they stayed very true to the old movie and that made me glad

I liked this movie. Yeah, i said that. Carpenter's Thing is a masterpiece, so would be hard task for this to be successful. But yeah, i liked it, not so bad.

The ending [with the running dog] making a hook to Carpenter's film was cool!

Oh wow, so instead of staying in the spirit of the 1982 movie and using practical effects, they went with the wax-coated CG animations? Way to go.
