Mark Ruffalo Offers Update On Solo HULK Movie And Teases THOR: RAGNAROK "Odd Couple"

Mark Ruffalo talks here about where things currently stand with a solo outing for the Hulk, goes into detail about his desire to see the Jade Giant and Bruce Banner split up and meet, weighs in on a Civil War cameo, and teases the dynamic between Hulk, Thor, and Loki in Ragnarok...

Were you hoping for a Hulk movie any time soon? Well, it's unfortunately no closer to happening according to Mark Ruffalo. Talking to USA Today recently, the actor confirmed that there are still some issues with making it a reality due to rights issues with Universal, something which obviously explains why the Jade Giant is going to show up in Thor: Ragnarok in 2017 rather than in that long rumoured Planet Hulk adaptation (which Thor's next movie may end up adapting in some form).

"Actually, it feels even further away. It's not Marvel's property, it's Universal's property. I don't know. It seems really problematic. I've been around long enough to be OK with it. There's only so much that's in my power and I'm not going to agonize over what is not in my power. I definitely try to limit that to my kids and the things that really matter to me. I'd love to do it, it'd be really fun. There's a lot still to do with the character. I always try to think about different places we could go with him."

As for what he hopes to see go down in Thor: Ragnarok (after confirming that The Hulk isn't going to be making an appearance in Captain America: Civil War due to Marvel "saving" him), the actor went on to elaborate on his recent comments about wanting to see the Green Goliath split from Bruce Banner and for the two to then meet. Based on his below comments, Ruffalo is really pushing for this to become a reality, so it should be interesting to see if Marvel pays attention to him.

"When you get off of the planet Earth, you can start playing with that stuff a little bit. I'm angling for it. I don't know if it'll happen now, but at some point, I'd like to see it happen. When I was doing Age of Ultron — doing the Scarlet Witch acid trip scenes — it really took me a long time to figure out what the Hulk would be afraid of. And then I realized, it was Banner. That relationship is what we're all so into, but we've never seen them in the same scene together — you're either one or the other, or somewhere in between. But I always imagined that that could be pretty exciting if we could pull it off. In the Marvel Universe, there is some precedence for it. I remember as a kid, seeing a few of the comics that'd have this multidimensional thing, so there's a lot of ways to do it ... if we could find the right context to use it."

Finally, Ruffalo confirmed that he's spoken to Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi and seems to confirm that Loki is also going to factor into the cosmic road trip the God of Thunder embarks on with The Hulk. After what happened in The Avengers, that should be pretty good fun...

"I don't know what the story is yet, but it'll be (Loki) and Thor, and then I'll be in there here and there. But I don't know any of the particulars quite yet. I've talked to Taika a little bit and I like where it's headed. ... Chris (Hemsworth) and I have a really good time together, we goof off and play around when Tom Hiddleston is around. So it'll be a lot of funny back-and-forth, especially with Taika, he does that really well. It'll have that kind of antagonistic Odd Couple-thing going on."

I wouldn't mind if they adapt the cartoon...both the wolverine n Thor ones were pretty good. As long as they keep the faith and story or Norse ranananarook, lol. Keeping my fingers crossed Loki shows up in a ship made from toe nails, haha

THIS NEEDS TO HAPPEN

EMH did it best. Hulk was perfect on that show. His relationship with Banner was so well done

It's definitely going to have some Hulk vs Thor influence.

In other words: No solo Hulk film, so stop asking.
There's no good reason for Marvel to share Hulk with Universal when they can just use him legally and more cheaply in cameo appearances.

I just hope this is still a Thor: Ragnarok movie

Sounds like it is going to be quite the movie. It would be a shame if Marvel doesn't figure things out with Universal in time to have Ruffalo in a solo Hulk film.

I feel like we're gonna see elements of PLANET HULK in Ragnarok. We my see Hulk and Banner learn to coexist, after being at psychological odds at first, and Hulk will become a true warrior. Thor may help him calm the beast and turn that power into something disciplined. His transformation from monster to warrior may be the redemption he needs. His power would be revered on Asgard. Having Thor and others transition him into a soldier who's in control of his power, would atone for the mindless destruction he's caused before.

We may see a Hulk like this, suited up but pummeling SURTUR's fire demons or Loki's henchmen instead of alien bugs

Didn't he talk about the same hulk relationship for Age of ultron? But it never really happened.

The way Whedon ended Avengers 2 left Hulk in a place where they could retell Avengers issue #3. That's where the Avengers search for their missing Hulk and find him teamed up with Namor. Considering that his plane went down over the ocean, I think Marvel should leave him lost there until they pick up that story. It would make a great Avengers 3 and work around not being legally able to do a Hulk or Namor solo.

"could they get away with a Hulk one-shot?"

It'd be prohibitively expensive. Feige once said the reason there aren't more Marvel one-shots is because most of the characters would be too expensive to do on the small budgets the one-shots have.

Even a few minutes of CGI Hulk costs a lot of money.

Come on Universal, give Marvel back The Incedible Hulk. You've already proven you can do a superhero like movie with Furious 7, I hardly think you'd need him anymore now that you've found your true cash cow. It'll make us forgive you for Jem as well.

CaptAmericaSux- thor ragnarok was higher for me before hulk (and i love the hulk) because before i was thinking/hoping for an epic thor movie and throwing hulk in makes me a bit more doubtful of that. although i still hope that this movie is good, they need a good director and story otherwise this could be very bad.

I think the writer for the Hulk Vs is also the writer for the Thor films.

Loki will be there of course. He's the most beloved character of the Thor franchise, and it makes sense storywise.
As for Hulk, I really don't expect anything major where his character development's concerned, mainly due to lack of time. Thor will eat up screentime, and so will Loki, to capitalize on his stature among Marvel fans. TDW was under 2 hours. I expect Ragnarok to be longer, but not by much. Probably between 120-126 minutes.
I think we will get enough Hulk to boost the story and prepare the character before Infinity War, which will be exciting, but I do wish Betty Ross was there. She's really that one thing that's missing about him. Of course now that he's sort of involved with Black Widow, it would make things awkward I guess :)

I don't know about this movie right now. I'm okay with the Hulk being in it, but it's sounding more and more like a fetch quest movie, and less and less like the end of days.

Looks like Thor, Hulk, and Loki will team up to go on a quest to retrieve an item to stop Ragnarok, probably returning just in time to defeat Surtur and his armies - but in the commotion, Thanos steals the Space Stone?

I have a feeling hulk DOES make a cameo in Civil War. After Credits scene where he seeks out Dr. Strange to help take him far away where he can't be used to hurt anyone. Strange uses a portal or something to send him off planet. I don't know... [fri]ck it, it's Halloween. I need candy.
