Shane Black In The Running To Write & Direct Iron Man 3!

It seems potential directors for the third installment of Jon Favreau's Iron Man franchise may be outed one-by-one with Lethal Weapons' Shane Black up first. Check it out!

After the disappointing departure with director Jon Favreau, and the third installment of his Iron Man franchise, many are open ears to who Marvel Studios will hire to fill his shoes. And now according to The Hollywood Reporter, Lethal Weapons' Shane Black is in contention.

The writer/director has powwowed with Marvel execs about his take on the third installment in the blockbuster franchise. Insiders said that Black's involvement is far from a sure thing, and that other writers and directors were being looked at. Marvel is keeping the story direction of Iron Man 3 -- which returns Robert Downey Jr. in the title role -- secret.

If Black, whose other credits include Kiss Kiss Bang Bang & The Last Boy Scout , were to land the gig, it'd reteam him with Robert Downey Jr. And prior to the release of the original Iron Man, Downey stated that he looked to Shane Black for some guidance as to where 'Tony Stark' should wind up next. Maybe they're on to something, what do you think?

Anyhow, Iron Man 3 is currently slated for theaters May 3, 2013!

well...I gotta say...have to hope for the best, but continuing movie franchises without the original director & his/her vision dont turn out well most of the time...but I will keep my fingers crossed...sucks epicly that favreau is gone..

Great find bud! Honestly I don't know what to think about this. That film Kiss Kiss Bang Bang was pretty good, but still, seems like an odd choice. The same thing was with Favreau and that turned out to be great at the end. I guess we will have to wait and see.

ARMOR WARS - should be told over two parts, iron man 3 armor wars part 1 & war machine armor wars part 2,it would be a 5 hour epic telling of the classic armor wars story.

WTF! Shane Black! I liked Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, obviously Lethal Weapon was great back in the day. But a VERY strange choice for this. Intriguing! Great catch MF.

how is it strange the dudes worked with downey he practically brought downey back to the big screen after years of trouble, it makes more sense then any other directors out there, first one worked so well cause of fav and DOWNEY. His style would work well, plus they need to take the 3rd one in a different direction, a bit more serious perhaps like tony becoming bankrupt, plus shane black knows how to write action sequences, so more action one of the biggest complaints from fav's tenure. Fav will be missed greatly

Dude, action is something a lot of directors do well. This is they guy behind some of the sweariest, most violent "splosion" fests in film history. If that isn't a strange fit for what is for all intents and purposes a kids movie I don't know what is. He is a very good writer and I'm not saying its a bad idea, just a left field one.

I could be wrong, but didn't Robert champion the writer of Iron man 2 after working with him on tropic thunder? If that is the case, this director has an excellent chance of winning this coveted position, due to their relationship.

you seriously think swearing can't be toned down, Iron Man's been rated a 12A here in UK don't what its rated in the US so its not exactly kiddie movie, its up to there parents if they want to take them. Like I said Shane Blacks makes more sense and is more realistic option then like JJ Abrams. wasn't strange letting the dude behind Elf direct Iron Man a character that was hardly known look how that turned out to be

To hell with Armor Wars, the last thing we want is another armored opponent.

I want Mandarin the way they write in Charlie & Daniel Knauf Iron Man. An ass kicking Ra's al Ghul with tech and aggressive cunning at his disposal.

Interesting choice. He hasn't directed/written any bad movies, that's for sure. And he's already worked with Downey before.
Not a bad choice at all, if it's true. Interesting...very interesting.

I liked Iron Man 1 and 2, I love them. But I think it was for the best that Favreau left before it got bad. He was obviously starting to get annoyed with Marvel. So it's a good thing he left before everything just got sloppy.

I'm not suggesting he's gonna fill the damn movie with F bombs, I'm merely pointing out that the director of The Last Boyscout wouldn't immediately spring to mind when thinking of potential directors for a Marvel movie is all.

Iron Man 2 was decent, I didn't get all the hate it got, but the first one is way superior. Hopefully IM3 will be the best of the trilogy. :D

neither would the director of Elf or the director behind Hamlet, Much Ado About Nothing or the Director behind Wolfman and Jumanji. Marvel go for the "strange" option
Hiraga08
Hiraga08 - 2/9/2011, 6:48 PM
@Exiles, I've noticed that too. Marvel goes with the more obscure director choices. But so far, it's worked out pretty well for them.

I do hope that Favreau AT LEAST returns to reprise the role of Happy Hogan. That's the least he could do.
If not, maybe Shane Black could replace him in that as well. lol

by the way i am not saying this guy is perfect for IM3 i just find it weird that this pick is 'strange' to some people all you have to do is look at marvel's pick of directors and you can see they don't exactly go for the most obvious directors. Anyways as long as we get to see mandarin then i am all good.

I don't know who came up with the idea to put Gore Verbinski in the director's chair, but I always thought that would be pretty cool.

But whatever, Shane Black wrote Monster Squad so I'll pretty much go with anything he does. I love Monster Squad so goddamn much.

Spectacular news!

I threw Black's name around back when Favreau left the franchise, and I still believe he would be an excellent director for the project.

Also, he also advised on the first two scripts, so he may have a history with Marvel, and has already worked with Robert Downey Jr. on "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" (which was very similar in tone to the Iron Man films, only more graphic with a hard R-rating).

@Thewitness you want to know why this won't turn out like x-men 3. Well the biggest difference is the fact that marvel studios are behind this and NOT fox!

Lethal Weapon, Monster Squad, Iron Man 3 AND Death Note?

Lethal Weapon is awsome obviously. Monster Squad was one of my all time favorite movies growing up and im a big comic book and anime fan! Death Note is my favorite anime ever. It blew my mind.

If he does the last two he will become a legend to me.

just as long as whoever directs it has more of the suit in the 3rd one since there was a huge lack of armor in the 2nd one.
