Judge Dredd Moving Forward

The producers are looking to put out a dark, gritty version with this new Judge Dredd.

Last week, it was reported that a new Judge Dredd movie was trying to get underway. Things look to be moving forward rather quickly as a press release has been issued:

Reliance BIG Pictures, together with IM Global, the international sales company that Reliance acquired only last week, will finance DNA’s 3D production of JUDGE DREDD, a $45 million film adaptation of the iconic 2000 AD comic-book character created by John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra.

Filming will take place over the fourth quarter of 2010 in Johannesburg.

JUDGE DREDD is being made by the writer/producer partnership behind The Beach, 28 Days Later, 28 Weeks Later, Sunshine, and Never Let Me Go. Alex Garland, Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich will produce a script written by Garland.

Pete Travis, director of Omagh, Vantage Point, and Endgame will direct. Wagner will be a creative consultant on the film.

DNA has engaged Michael Murphy (District 9) as South African co-producer.

Jason Kingsley and Chris Kingsley, owners of Rebellion/2000 AD, will co-produce.

Said John Wagner: ‘Alex Garland’s script is faithful to the original concept that made Judge Dredd a favourite bad-ass hero. It’s a high-octane slay ride through the dark underbelly of the vast future city. A fan pleaser. With their track record, I have every faith in Alex Garland, Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich.’

Said Alex Garland: ‘I grew up reading Judge Dredd. The incredible writers and artists of 2000 AD were formative influences on me. Andrew, Allon and I have developed this adaptation of Judge Dredd with an emphasis on adrenaline and realism, but with all the scale and spectacle of Mega-City One. We think Pete’s propulsive, edgy style is a perfect match for the project.’

The deal was negotiated on behalf of Reliance by IM Global CEO Stuart Ford assisted by attorneys Strook and Strook with DNA principals Macdonald and Reich, DNA head of business affairs Jo Smith, and Miles Ketley of Wiggin & Co. Ford’s IM Global will handle international sales on the project.

DogsOfWar-I like the addition of Michael Murphy from District 9 as a Producer. I can't say I'm too excited about the 3D announcement especially with a $45 million dollar budget. 3D treatment will only pull away from standard visual effects and stunts.

I only ever read the Judge Dredd Batman cross over with Judge Death/Scare Crow and the empathic lady judge character where they all end up in Gotham city. That was a great story, with fantastic visuals by Simon Bisley. Lady Judge buns are tight. :P
I cannot wait for this movie to come out, I enjoyed the Stallone one cause I had nothing to ahem, Judge it by. :P

This looks really promising considering that District 9 only cost 30 million dollars to make (even though it seems that D9 was mostly filmed in a landfill site), so there may be some financial incentive to make this in South Africa,

This will be a good film if Dredd keeps his helmet on, major villains are NOT killed and Rob Schneider is SHOT ON SIGHT if he goes anywhere near the production.

Really though. after some 30-odd years, there's such a wealth of material to work with, and so many interesting characters (the Dark Judges, P.J.Maybe, Otto Sump etc) inhabiting this world that to repeat the failings of the Stallone movie would be disastrous, not only for further Dredd films, but for Rebellion as a Company, not forgetting of course, that the Kingsleys bought 2000AD from Fleetway because they're fan-boys and as such want these properties treated with respect.

Have faith - even with the 3D, this WILL be good.

Sounds good, if any character was made to be dark and gritty it's Judge Dredd

just don't get a pretty-boy to play Dredd. it needs to be someone gritty and jaded. and NOOOO to Bruce Willis!!! i don't think they can afford him anyways; not with that budget.

Its a longgggggggggg time coming!

I take it their not doing two movies back-to-back now!?

Shame but still cool news, though they better include JUDGE DEATH and JUDGE ANDERSON in this!!

As for the budget, great news, it means we'll get a DREDD that keeps his helmet on!!! ([frick]ing better lol).

I like GERARD BUTLER, but URBAN (Better GHOST RIDER) or anyone could do the role really but because of the budget and this actor has the chiseled chin, RAY would make a great JOE DREDD!

(He'd keep the helmet on too and was EPIC in ROME!!!)

On the point of who would wear the helmet, I think that the way Hugo Weaving approached playing V was the most professional: he knew that he'd be acting without being able to use his face for expressing himself so had to use his skills to make his body language speak instead of his face.
Any actor worth his salt would look upon a role where the majority of their face is covered as a challenge. Indeed, for an actor to demand a change in a role as fundamental as happened with Stallone is an act of arrogant vanity and speaks volumes about their limitations as an actor.

Helly yea..I luv the idea of another Judge Dredd movie. The first one was ok I would actually put it on the same level of a few other movies out now. However, Leee Ray as Dredd would be an awesome pick.

The more i think about it, the better Ray Stevenson is as a Judge Dredd contender. He's the least expensive choice with the most experience in regards to the role's requirements. He's got the look, the presence, the build & height, the facial expressions, the intensity AND the acting skills to make the best ever Dredd possible. He'd also be the only one to be able to make the comic helmet look actually good. I mostly prefer Stallone's rounded out helmet on anyone else but on Ray Ray, the triangulish comic helmet would totally kick ass!!!

@Leee; dude Stevenson as Dredd is like Christopher Reeves as Superman: Just perfect

gtrman- Adam Baldwin? As in, the FBI agent that shot at the coke can on the alien craft in Independance Day? Sorry, it's the only thing i saw him in LOL ;P But he kinda has a baby face to him that lacks the grit needed for Dredd. I dunno... He could be this stellar actor but he doesn't have the metaphoric "chest hair" to pull off Dredd convincingly IMO. You never know though ;)

@LEEE@ - I'm with you man. Ray Stevenson FTW!!!

@teabag - That's the teabag we've missed around here. You pervert. LOL

@LEEE777 - Good job dude, RAY STEVENSON is the perfect Judge Dredd.

Knowing Hollywood they would probably get one of the Jonas Brothers to play The Judge. Ugh. .... LOL

My other Director choices:
Alex Proyas, David Fincher, Vincenzo Natali, Neill Blompkamp, Nicolas Winding Refn, Danny Boyle, Marc Caro and Alfonso Cuaron. These guys are great film makers and i think that one of them should get the chance to direct Judge Dredd! Because these guys has the talent to keep the watcher on the edge of the seat!
AlexDeLarge87
AlexDeLarge87 - 5/18/2010, 2:49 PM
Tea@ I see Hardy as the bad guy more than Judge Dredd!
He could maybe play Judge Rico or some other Judge in the movie?... Or one of the Angel Gang?!
CHRIS COOPER AS ELMER "PA" ANGEL and JACKIE EARLE HALEY AS "FINK" ANGEL!:D That would be something!
Ouh!... And DOUG JONES AS JUDGE DEATH! He deserves to play him all by himself!

I would be cool with Stephenson as Dredd. See Lee...I don't always disagree with you. ;-) At least you didn't pick out one of your wimpy, feminine boys for the part of a strong masculine character. :P

Sam Worthington should be banned from any non-Australian accent parts in films until he can perfect other dialects. That's even pushing it for me. Part of me would like to ban him from Hollywood period. :P

As a die hard Dredd Fan My vote is Ray Stevenson. He has the Look. The talent to truley act with the helmet on and a commanding screen Presence. I am pumped up for this Movie. Oh and Judge Death needs to be the Villain:)
