Justice League Dark: Apokolips War is being advertised as the culmination of a "six-year animated journey," and a new report claims that the plan is for it to end the current era of the DC Animated Movie Universe. According to ComicBook.com, the film will be the final instalment in the series which kicked off with 2014's Justice League: War.

That introduced the concept of a shared animated universe, but given how heavily inspired it's been by "The New 52" era of storytelling, it's no great surprise that Warner Bros. is looking for a fresh start. With any luck, that will also mean an updated aesthetic and animation style.

Don't panic about these movies going anywhere, though, because the site adds that the plan is for the studio to continue producing animated features based on the DC Universe, including the planned Superman: Man of Tomorrow

A number of familiar storylines have been adapted since Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox served as a reboot in 2013, including The Death of Superman, Throne of Atlantis, The Judas Contract, and Red Son. With any luck, that will continue moving forward, though original stories could become a priority based on what director Sam Liu recently told us

Justice League Dark: Apokolips War is certainly shaping up to be an epic adventure as the Justice League, Teen Titans, Suicide Squad, Green Lantern Corps, and more will all assemble to take down Darkseid. The movie even boasts an impressive cast which includes names like Matt Ryan, Rosario Dawson, and Rebecca Romijn.

The movie is set to be released on Digital on May 5th and Blu-ray on May 19th.

@tmp3 - A couple of them have been good. But not enough of them. I miss the Timmverse.

Talk about some missed opportunities they could have done story-wise with this era, but I understand. They want to move on to Rebirth, and that should make for some great translations to animation. I'm really looking forward to/hoping they tackle the Super-Family with introducing Sam Kent/Superboy to us.

@Beerus - Ehh, to me it sounds more like they're just going back to stand alone animated films with their own art styles and voice casts

@BillCipher - Only thing the animated universe did was implement cheap animation to every single production...

I will say, I did like the DC Showcase they did for Death from Sandman. Good short

I'm hoping that this will be longer than the usual length. I get animation is a bit pricey, but my biggest issue was never the story-telling or the animation. Just that they always felt a bit short

Make more of classic DC stories.

-Kingdom Come
-Crisis On Infinite Earths
-Sinestro Corp War
-Blackest Night

@marvel72 - You are making me feel real old calling Blackest Night “classic”.

@TheUnworthyThor - I think it's about ten years old.

@marvel72 - Yeah, exactly. A modern comic book. :)

@TheUnworthyThor - I think he means classic in the sense it has a good reputation as a defining story for a character. For example, Court of Owls is a pretty recent story. But it's still a "classic" Batman story that's really let an impact on the mythos.

@marvel72 - We need more Green Lantern films, period.

@Nightwing1015 - That just seems to be confusing the words good or great with the word classic. Things are named “classic” to denote a long-standing popular version or model, to distinguish it from a newer variety. Typically things like cars and music have to be at least 25 years old to be called classic. I mean dang we’ve had runs of writers on comics that have lasted ten years. Let’s not diminish the word classic, let’s let things stand the test of time before we have declared they have stood the test of time already.

@TheUnworthyThor - What about when people say "instant classic". I think that's what he meant

@TheUnworthyThor - A modern classic. :)

@Nightwing1015 - But that’s a term using a qualifier that denotes that it’s not a true classic yet. I understand that he thinks those are great stories but when we keep using words like epic or classic to describe things constantly those words cease to mean much of anything.

@LordWaldo - Oooh how terrible, look how big of a deal I made of it, I made a small jeez you are making me feel old joke and replied to some comments, I really threw a huge conniption fit this time.

That’s cool. I mean I love the idea of a continuing shared animated universe but a fresh start with a less new-52 inspired team would be a wonderful way to go.

I know people don't like this series because of its "New 52" look but honestly there've been some great scenes and movies in it. Hopefully the next universe is just as good.
