Kick-Ass Movie May Be Sued!

Kick-Ass Movie May Be Sued!

First there was an outcry from concerned families, and now a random guy claims: "THEY STOLE MY IDEA!".

Now don’t be alarmed just yet, this article is so far not associated with any “real” news. But today I was checking up on the release dates for “Kick-Ass” at IMDB (admitedly not the best site to do that) and stumbled over something I just couldn’t resist posting here. I know that this kind of article is not very common on this site, but I took my chance anyway and posted it. And seing as “Kick-Ass already is in for a good ol’ spanking with the angry momma-patrol, because of the violence and bad language and off course a 12 year old girl kicking some serious ass, I thought that this might as well qualify.

The thing I stumbled on was not just laughable as hell, it was a whole new low for whinny trolls all over the globe. A guy had posted a new topic in the commenting section(or what IMDB calls the section, where every nobody can just post his random thoughts). The title of this topic read: “THEY STOLE MY IDEA!”.
I was quite litteraly laughing my ass off and had a great kick out of reading his statement. The poor guy claim that Mark Millar had stolen his idea – A film project from his High School years, involving an ordinary guy who dresses up to stop crimes, that he did 10 years ago – And now he is ready to sue the ass off the Kick-Ass creator.

I’m not gonna post the topic here, but click the source link and it will take you right to the comment that made my day, also make sure to read the replies, some of them are just pure comic gold!

I hope you find this as entertaining as me or maybe you think that this guy should be taken serious and treated with respect for his courage to come forward with this? And does this guy really stand a chance if he goes ahead and sues Mark Millar and co.? Well shout out and let me know what you think.

The courts don't put any stock in these kinds of slap suits.
There was a woman from Pa who was trying to sue JK Rowling back when for stealing her idea of a boy wizard. Lost miserably.

I'm not reading it nor am I really intrested, but if his whole thing is that they stole his idea of a high school kid that becomes a hero, I'm pretty sure that everyone on the planet who enjoys super heroes of any kind have probably had that idea including the major players that work for companies like DC & Marvel.

The thing is Millar got it published he didn't and IF the guy really did write it then he should have copyrighted it. lol. But still I smell bullshit.

Idiot.

when i was in high school i wrote a comic title "John Paul the II - pope of action" where john paul with his side kick alterboy fought other religious leaders and dieties, it was funny as hell. i should sue kirkman for writing "Battle Pope" then. for that matter we should all sue mark millar because we all thought about dressing up as a super hero at some point in our childhood.

BULLSHIT! the incredibles were pretty much ripped off of the Fantastic 4, and no one did anything! i think its cuz th FF movies sucked worse then it.

so he says this, but does he have the proof to back it up?...

" A film project from his High School years, involving an ordinary guy who dresses up to stop crimes, that he did 10 years ago – And now he is ready to sue the ass off the Kick-Ass creator. "

so what, this guy thinks he's the first person to ever come up with that idea?? if thats the case, then he's obviously never picked up a comic book before.

If you want to see a similar conceit of a geek becoming a powerless hero check out Captain Blasto. Its not that great but a fun watch.

Hollywood does indeed steal ideas from people, this is indisputable. I fail to see how Millar stole this one though, and that's saying something, since I think most of you know my less-than-impressed view of his work. Looks pretty much baseless from what little we know so far. I'll be curious to see what evidence is presented for this one if they do indeed go to court. They'd need to do some sort of "Six Degrees of Mark Millar" kind of connecting the dots to even have a chance at this.

For everyone complaining that this guy should have said something when the comics were published, keep in mind yet again that comics is a niche industry, gang. Even if this guy really was ripped off by Millar somehow, the average person doesn't pay attention to comics and would have no idea. As someone who doesn't go looking for Millar's work, I never heard of Kick-Ass until I saw the news about the movie on this site, and then I found out the background. It's not out of the realm of possibility that he's just becoming aware of it now that it's getting publicity on movie sites.

As an aside, the fun one for me will be if Nemesis is stopped by a court injunction filed by Warner/DC on the eve of its delivery to comic shops for copying Batman, particularly since Millar has been so vocal about it being about a character who is essentially Batman-gone-bad. And since Warner/DC is a publisher in his own industry, it's not like it could go unnoticed...

I hear this guy is now being sued by Jack Kirby's kids for making a student film about a hero vigilante since it can be related back to comics...

Wow, this is crazy. People think up and imagine similar things all the time. Just like Skunkape said, Rowling got sued for something similar. Tough break for the people pointing fingers, but they should have copyrighted their material or got something out to the public about their f***ing "great" ideas before someone else makes it better.

Who HASN'T came up with the concept of this movie? Honestly? It's just how you spin it and retell the story.

You know, it's funny. I actually made a film in college about this premise, but I certainly don't think Mark Miller "stole" my idea. I'm sure lots of people have had the idea. If you want to check it out, here's the link to the film. It's a low budget film made by a handful of college kids between classes, but it's still pretty cool.

well if this guy wins I should sue Tim Kring for stealing my idea of Heroes, I made a story similar to Heroes about 3 years before the show came out, it's essentially what if Mutants were real kinda story, it even has the government rounding them up and trying to use them as weapons.... similar to season 3 of Heroes...oh but wait I have never met Tim Kring or anyone who could possibly allow him to steal my idea.... hmmm maybe they have a spy cam in my house...or my computer is bugged!....oh god my porn is compromised!!!!
