Does PARASITE Director Bong Joon-ho Agree With Scorsese And Coppola's Stance On Marvel Movies?

Parasite helmer Bong Joon-ho was asked if he agrees with Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola's assertion that Marvel movies are something other than cinema. Find out what he had to say after the jump.

Director Bong Joon-ho (Snowpiercer, Okja) appears to have another winner on his hands, as his 2019 South Korean black comedy thriller Parasite figures to be a serious awards contender this year. It's already received the prestigious Palme d'Or award at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival and is South Korea's entry for Best International Feature Film at the 92nd Academy Awards.

In a recent interview, Bong Joon-ho was asked to share his thoughts on the recent debate stirred up by venerable directors like Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola concerning the artistic merit or Marvel movies.

"I have so much respect for Scorsese and Coppola, and I grew up studying their films. So I fully understand the context of their comments and I respect their opinion. But on the other hand, if I look at the films individually, I enjoyed Guardians of the Galaxy, James Mangold’s Logan and Winter Soldier by the Russo Brothers. There are great cinematic moments in those films."

Joon-ho was then asked if he would ever direct a superhero film one day, and sadly gave a reply that makes it seem unlikely.

"I have a personal problem. I respect the creativity that goes into superhero films, but in real life and in movies, I can’t stand people wearing tight-fitting clothes. I’ll never wear something like that, and just seeing someone in tight clothes is mentally difficult. I don’t know where to look, and I feel suffocated. Most superheroes wear tight suits, so I can never direct one. I don’t think anyone will offer the project to me either. If there is a superhero who has a very boxy costume, maybe I can try."

You can check out a trailer for Parasite below. The film had a limited theater run in the U.S. back in October and is should arrive on home video soon as Amazon Prime's pre-order page has recently gone live.

Let's just talk about Parasite and how it was great instead.

(agree with him though)

@Necropolitan - Parasite was fantastic. I managed to avoid watching any trailers for it and I probably enjoyed it more for that reason. At the end, I was left thinking "WTF did I just watch?", but in a good way.

Parasite is my favorite of this year! Such a great film, and (unpopular opinion) I can even see an americanized remake being well made.

1. Parasite
2. The Irishman
3. The Farewell
4. Joker
5. The Lighthouse

Only things that can compete really for top spots at this point I feel are: Knives Out, Uncut Gems, and Richard Jewell I

@DannRamm113 - How was The Lighthouse. Trailers seem kinda interesting but I can't make up my mind if I wanna see it or not. Can you maybe compare it to some other films?

@Odin - Lighthouse is a super weird movie with amazing performances. Its a weirder, more indie version of the shining. that's about as far as I can say

"Does PARASITE Director Bong Joon-ho Agree With Scorsese And Coppola's Stance On Marvel Movies?"

I still don't actually know what either of their points were about the MCU films specifically. Scorcese was admittedly ignorant, so I struggle to understand what he thought he was saying, and Coppola is full of shit and contradictory, so again, confused.

They both had fairly cogent points about the need to maintain the theater experience, it was just that (ironically) Scorcese's new film is debuting on a platform intrinsically tied to the "death" of cinema

That might be the most honest answer to the question ever.

That is the best reason for not wanting to direct superhero movies I have ever seen.

That's actually an amazing answer, not only does he have a perfectly balanced outlook on the debate, but he also has a clearly honest reason (probably based on some kind of personal phobia from the way he worded it) that he wouldn't get involved in the genre.

Parasite is the best film of the year and one of the best films of the 2010s bitch.

Seriously tho, y'all better go see it.

That's a good description of most superhero films. "There are some great cinematic moments." They usually aren't well written, but they sure do have dazzling and memorable moments. Half the script is fumbling from one of those moments to the next, which goes to Scorcese's point, but they sure are enjoyable.

The comic book movie genre needs to evolve. The Dark Knight films, Man of Steel and now Joker proved that you could have serious films that don't rely on jokes and CGI that are also financially successful. There is no reason for Warner Brothers specifically to keep trying to copy Marvel.

They should have created a shared universe by continuing a combined Dark Knight/Man of Steel universe as the foundation. Then they would have been seeing even greater success than what they just saw with the Joker (a film franchise that should NOT have a sequel)!
