LOST And WATCHMEN Showrunner Damon Lindelof Thinks Releasing Fewer MCU Movies Would Make Them More Special

Watchmen showrunner Damon Lindelof has shared his take on the expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe, revealing why he thinks fewer releases from Marvel Studios would actually make their movies more special.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is rapidly expanding, with Phases 4, 5, and 6 taking place over a mere four years. In comparison, the first three Phases played out over eleven years, though the greater number of movies in theaters and Disney+ have seen Marvel Studios pick up the pace in terms of storytelling.

None of these newer projects have gotten lost in the shuffle yet, but many fans have argued that there's been a slight decline in quality over the past couple of years.

While Lost and Watchmen showrunner Damon Lindelof didn't comment specifically on that perception during a recent interview with Vulture, he did share his take on why he thinks Marvel Studios should slow down. The filmmaker suggested that fewer Marvel movies could ultimately make them feel more special.

"It's always going to be hard because once you’ve got someone’s attention, you want to keep it. And so the idea of letting it go and not knowing if you’re ever going to get it back again is sort of like it’s antithetical to the way that we’re wired."

"From a slightly sort of more cynical standpoint, this is a business. It's an industry. And if you make a couple of great Marvel movies, the instinct is, 'We need to make more Marvel movies, and we need to expand this,'" Lindelof continued. "And I have this sort of interior feeling of like, 'Wow, I wish they made less because it would make each one that came out a little bit more special.' But I watch all of them, Sam, all of them.

"People don't want things to end. I do. I don't begrudge them the right to keep it going. I've made prequels and sequels and reboots, so I can't be a hypocrite and say, ‘God, come up with an original idea.' Meanwhile, I'm making two 'Star Trek' movies and 'Prometheus.'"

It's true that MCU movies did feel a little more special when we got fewer of them, but it's also hard to complain about the sheer amount of content we've been treated to in recent years. Ultimately, there's a fine line between quantity and quality, and it will be down to Marvel Studios to make sure they don't drop the ball as we head deeper into The Multiverse Saga.

What's your take on Lindelof's comments?

As much as I hate to say it, we all know that the superhero genre will blow over eventually. That means that studios have to forge while the iron is hot.

What the MCU has done is unprecedented. Making so many movies and shows that ties together within such a short time frame is extremely impressive and requires a lot of work.

Who knows how long characters like the Marvel heroes will appeal to the general audience? Let's just enjoy it while it lasts.

I say push back the Avengers movies at the very least.

Yeah, no shit. And the Super Bowl would be more special if you only played it every four years. But they aren’t going to do that because that would be really stupid and it’s pretty great as it is. You might have a point if they were releasing a bunch of Avengers movies every year but if they release those every four years and have all these other movies starring wide array of different characters then they are going to be just fine.

Why do we need 4 [frick]ing movies every year? Plus 4 shows.. and what makes it so special when they're all MEDIOCRE! Maybe if you went back to one or two, you could spend more time on the overworked visual artists and also feed the stupid money who's writing these scripts, but not they have a quota to fill with the app.. take me back to 08 when this was ACTUALLY SPECIAL

The guys right. People will push back because they mistake what he’s saying as being hate but he’s just being honest. I use to see all the Marvel stuff now I watch maybe 50% of it because I just couldn’t care less about a lot of it knowing more will be released a month later.

I agree 100%. 👍🏻

Between the movies AND the flood of Disney+ series, it's a simple case of oversaturation.

However, "MARVEL" has now become a commodity for Disney. It may be too late. No one will be trying to put the tooth-paste back into the tube anytime soon. 🤨

I think most stuff does still feel special because some projects couldn't be more different from each other (as far as that is possible in the action-adventude genre).

Thing for me it just feels like a full-time job for me now. Only one where I share this sentiment is with Secret Wars. Should be a year gap with Kang Dynasty in my opinion

Not true.
They only made 1 good movie a year but now they make 2 good movies in a year. Marvel films have always been mocked as cookie cutter so being special was never a priority.

I think I can agree with that.

Just go back to the way things were, three good movies, no shows. Even if the movies were divisive they were less divisive than this. They were slightly divisive. Except for no way home, these range from moderately divisive to objectively boring as crap

he's right about Marvel, but this more than applies to Star Wars. It used to be an event every few decades or so to get a new SW movie. Even if they weren't good, it was a spectacle. Now it's just way too much. Star Trek is kinda hitting that, woth like 4 shows at a time. Just let people breath, jeez
