Marvel Studios demonstrated last week that they are still capable of pulling off surprise announcements when they revealed that a brand-new animated series called Eyes of Wakanda was in development during a special preview event for the release of What If...? season 2.
A few days later, Disney then revealed their 2024 film and television schedule, indicating that Eyes of Wakanda would indeed debut the following year.
We now know one of the creatives working on the project due to the most recent edition of Kevin Smith's podcast, The Fatman Beyond.
Marc Bernardin, the co-host of the podcast, shocked both Smith and the audience when he revealed that he had already written two of the show's episodes.
"I wrote two episodes of it. So, I know some things about Eyes of Wakanda. I can't say anything besides that or the snipers will get twitchy," shared Bernardin.
He went on to add that Eyes of Wakanda was the reason why he couldn't come back to work on season 2 of Netflix's Masters of the Universe.
"...But, no this was a pandemic gig. This was the reason why I couldn't come back for Masters of the Universe Season 2. Because, this swallowed my life for about nine months. But, I can't wait until you guys see it because it's so freaking dope."
Smith and Bernardin start talking about Eyes of Wakanda at the 1:54:45 mark.
If Bernardin wrote his episodes during the pandemic, then he's been sitting on this information for a long time. It's surprising that news of the series didn't come out sooner, given that Marvel rarely manages to keep secrets from leaking out these days.
Bernardin is a comic book writer and screenwriter with credits on Alphas, Carnival Row, Star Trek: Picard and The Legend of Vox Machina. He's also written issues of The Authority, Static Shock and Spider-Man.
Black Panther director Ryan Coogler is reportedly involved with the project but there's no word yet actually confirming what his exact role is in the show's creation and development.
It's believed that Coogler's Black Panther spinoff series for Disney+, which was announced in 2021, has turned into this cartoon series. MCU fans are currently speculating whether this was a decision made by Coogler or by Disney CEO Bob Iger in the wake of his comments that the company would be looking to reduce overhead costs on the new streaming service.
The official synopsis for Eyes of Wakanda reads, "Throughout Wakandan history, brave warriors have been tasked to travel the world retrieving dangerous vibranium artifacts. This is their story."
