Box Office Buzz January 1-3

The weekends a blurry memory and we’re left with one question; which movie topped the box office this weekend? Well obviously that’s an easy question this time around, but it won’t be so easy when Avatar leaves theatres.

In its third week since debuting at number one, Avatar has soared past the billion dollar mark worldwide and continues to hold its number one spot over rivals Sherlock Holmes. Not surprisingly there were no big releases this week (if any), leaving the third spot for Alvin and the Chipmunks: the Squeakquel.

Avatar took in $68.3 million this weekend, a drop of only 9.7% from last week, a phenomenal effort three weeks into a run. Sherlock Holmes was less lucky taking in a respectable $38 million, dropping 38.5% in its second week of screening. Alvin and the Chipmunks managed a close $36.6 million dropping 25%.

With a whopping $1.02 billion under its belt, Avatar takes the fourth spot on the worldwide grossing chart, blasting past the Dark Knight and leaving all the Harry Potters’, Spider-man’s and all but one of the Lord of the Rings movies in its wake.

Ahead of it is Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest at number 3, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King at 2 and, you guessed it, James Cameron’s other massive hit, Titanic at number one with $1.8 billion. That being said, Avatar has only had 3 weekends to soar past the billion dollar mark, whereas Titanic was in theatres for 41 weekends. Guess we’ll have to wait and see what happens, huh?

There are several finacial calculations (inflation and population of the earth are two biggies) that should adjust these worldwide records and which have not been applied. The unadjusted records are inaccurate and don't mean an awful lot. So lets not get to excited about them.

That said, I think everyone should see Avatar in all its 3D glory. Eyecandy of the highest magnitude. It deserves to make every penny that it does, but it's not the end all be all.

With out mathematical context its like comparing Bonds' homerun records to Aaron's or Merris'. The other guys did not benefit from steroids, extra games in a season, dietitians, modern weight training, etc. When these things are taken into account the current unadjusted records are not so impressive.

This movie wasn't that good. Visually it was amazing the best movie I've ever seen. But all the story was, was Pocahontas with awesome effects.

I know people are going to hate this comment but deep down you know its true

What's wrong with a visual movie? why do people have this idea that it's all about the story? A movie should draw you in, it's art, this movie does all of that.

Damn, James Cameron is king of the world.....again! 3 freakin weeks and this movie is at the billion dollar mark! I nearly fainted when I heard the news. It takes months to reach the billion dollar mark (if that) and this movie has done it in 3 weeks! Obviously the ticket pricing for 3D brings the the total gross up a bit, but even so, raking up this much money (in december no less) is an amazing feat.

I was wondering how long it would be before we got another "avatar made a shitload of money and might beat the dark knight" article. Glad I didn't have to wait to long I was starting to get withdrawals. Look forward to the next in a few days.

MAN THAT WAS A GREAT MOVIE VISUALLY..AND THE STORY WAS GREAT ALSO (THATS RIGHT I SAID IT)

I agree with "blackswords7" this movie draws you COMPLETLY into the world, sure the story was predictable, but come on.. no one walked out on the movie half way through cause you knew what was going to
happen..we all stuck around to the very end. and
(at least for me) I walked out of the theater saying
"WOW I could see that movie again right now!"..I am
happy Cameron is making his money back plus a billion.
BUT..I still say NO to a sequal..It was a stand alone movie, and always should be.

I am not trying to knock Avatar, hell I haven't even seen it yet. Why are there so many Avatar articles here! I know, I know it is a similar genre that most of us enjoy but this is ComicBookMovie.com. I just don't get it and especially them making the main page. I mean an article about Avatar sex made the main a few days ago. WTF!!!

Sorry, had to vent. @Joshua-this is not about your article, just the proverbial straw that broke the camels back.

Looks like Cameron is the best film maker of all time from a monetary standpoint. If he ever had trouble selling ideas and picking work with studios before (which I doubt) he certainly never will again. I am going to see Avatar finally myself tomorrow. I hope I enjoy it as much as many of you did.

BrazillianBatman, uh... wow. I bet you'd give Bruce Wayne a BJ if he were real, huh.

I've said this before but here we go again...

If you break down the story of the first Star Wars what do you have? A story about a wizard who takes a farm boy on a journey to become a knight and rescue a princess. It is one of the oldest fracking stories there is; but because it was told in a new visual way, the movie was classic. To bring the average viewer into a movie like Avatar you need a familiar story to ease the audience into the fantastical aspects. Then if you do a sequel you can get all Empire Strikes Back on it.

I think as comic book fans we don't need the same buffer to get into a story. We all grew up on giants who eat planets and men who shoot laser beams from their eyes and more blue people than you can shake a stick at. We forget that some people still need their hands held to cross into another universe.

Man your computer goes down for a couple of weeks and all kinds of hell breaks loose. I can't believe what this movie has done. I think hollywood would fund anything James wants to do, maybe a movie about a dog pissing on a tree. This guy is hollywood gold, and now you can all bet the farm on it.

I hope to God that Avatar has the power to beat Titanic. Having a sci-fi movie as the greatest selling flick would really turn Hollywood upside down. Definitely a huge step for future CBMs, right?
