Christopher Nolan's OPPENHEIMER Sets 2023 Release Date; BATMAN BEGINS' Cillian Murphy To Star In Title Role

Following a deep trek into sci-fi with Tenet, Christopher Nolan's next film will be the historical drama Oppenheimer, and he has enlisted frequent collaborator Cillian Murphy to play the title role.

After securing the services of one of Hollywood's most bankable directors a few weeks ago, Universal Pictures has formally announced that Christopher Nolan's upcoming historical thriller Oppenheimer will open exclusively in theaters globally on July 21, 2023.

It's also been confirmed that frequent collaborator Cillian Murphy (The Dark Knight trilogy; A Quiet Place Part II) has been tapped to play the lead role of scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer, who is, of course, known as the "father of the atomic bomb."

According to Deadline, the film will officially begin production in early 2022, and as per Nolan standard, will shoot with a combination of IMAX 65mm and 65mm large-format film cameras, which will surely make this project one not to miss on the biggest screen imaginable.

Nolan will write and direct with Emma Thomas and Charles Roven attached as producers. Several familiar faces will also be involved in the project, including Academy Award-nominated director of photography Hoyte Van Hoytema (Tenet; Dunkirk), editor Jennifer Lame (Tenet; Don't Worry Darling), and Academy Award-winning composer Ludwig Göransson (TenetBlack Panther).

In their announcement, Universal Filmed Entertainment Group Chairman, Donna Langley said, "Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas’ films have shattered the limits of what cinematic storytelling can achieve. We are thrilled to be working alongside them on this exceptional and extraordinary project and are grateful for their shared passion and commitment to the theatrical experience."

Looking ahead, July 2023 will also see the release of Tom Cruise's Mission: Impossible 8 on July 7, 2023 and then an Untitled Marvel Studios Film on July 28, 2023 - which has been rumored as the release date for Fantastic Four - so it looks like Nolan will definitely see some heavy competition from Kevin Feige and company during those late summer weeks.

Cool! They must really like working with each other since Murphy appeared in almost all of Nolan’s films since Batman Begins.
Loved his performance in Inception

I can only assume Michael Caine will show up, playing some wisened mentor figure who delivers tons of expository dialogue?

@santoanderson - wouldn't be surprised if they cast him as Einstein, even if Caine is twenty years older than Einstein was at the time of the Manhattan Project

Even though Tenet was so-so, I'm still looking forward to this a lot. The whole of the Manhattan Project and the people involved are so interesting that that is enough to get me invested in it. Combine that with Nolan, and there's probably gonnna be some twist too (my guess: universe-splitting)

Sounds Dull.

It will be interesting to see a Chrsitopher Nolan film that doesn't deal with anything out of the ordinary...unless it does of course.

@Fares - Like Dunkirk, I imagine it will be pretty normal. Relatively fishing of course.

I like Cillian Murphy, but I just can't stop thinking about Nolan's next sci-fi project.

What will it be about?

I can think only of parallel universes (which is not very original given MCU, but he could make something new with it).

I would love Cillian Murphy to portray Blackheart in the MCU.

Was really hoping for Mark Rylance but Cillian Murphy is a great choice after seeing Dunkirk.

I'm getting more and more burned out on Nolans style. His last 3 movies Interstellar, Dunkirk and Tenant were all style soup with no meat or veggies in em. I have zero excitement at this juncture.

@ElricReturns -

Interstellar was amazing.
The other two...😬

@HulkisHorny - I beg to differ. Interstellar was far from amazing imo.

@ElricReturns - Add The Dark Knight Rises to the list for me. Havent felt a Nolan movie to be truly 'great' since Inception.

So many exciting and cool options to name this movie and they chose the most boring possible option.
