Didya know? That Derek Luke was not the first actor to play Gabe Jones

"We must concentrate not merely on the negative expulsion of war but the postive affirmation of peace." -Martin Luther King, Jr. We recently learned that Derek Luke will be playing Gabe Jones in The First Avenger: CAPTAIN AMERICA. But did you know that this is not the first time this Howling Commando had transitioned from comic to screen. Continue reading to learn who and where this character and other Howling Commands have been adapted before.

Apparently if your like @LEEE you've probably known this already ☺

First what are Howling Commandos?
The Howling Commandos are a fictional World War II unit lead by superspy S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Nick Fury who was sergeant at that time. They were created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, and first appeared in Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos #1 (May 1963).

The name Howling Commandos came about from a bet from Stan Lee and his publisher Martin Goodman that he could make a book sell even with the worst title he could devise. Lee said that at that time the title was considered bad because the name Howling Commandos was too long.
He said he got the name Howling Commandos from patterning it to a group on the army known as the "Screaming Eagles" .

Back to Gabe Jones

Gabriel "Gabe" Jones was born in New York City. He is an original member of the fictional, elite Howling Commandos combat squad of World War II, and the first African-American to serve in an integrated unit. (The U.S. Armed Forces, in real life, were not integrated until 1948, by executive order of President Harry S Truman.) He is one of the close confidantes of Nick Fury.

The first live appearance of this character is in the 1998 TV Movie of Nick Fury : Agent of Shield. He was played by actor Ron Canada. In this version he is a top S.H.I.E.L.D. executive, a deputy director looking prim and proper in his dark blue threads. He is described as Nick Fury's "Q" (To those who only happened to watch Daniel Craig's James Bond, Q was character from the previous film who provides all the hi-tech stuffs to the agent).

Dum Dum Dugan

Another Howling Commando who appeared in this movie is Dum Dum Dugan sans the awesome bowler cap, and the Col. Sanders moustache.

Timothy Aloysius Cadwallader "Dum Dum" Dugan in the comics is now an officer of S.H.I.E.L.D. and is one of the most experienced members of Nick Fury's team, known for his marksmanship with rifles and for his impressive physique. He is recognized for his trademark bowler hat.

Clay Quartermain

The show also introduced Clay Quartermain a former partner of Nick Fury in the agency but was killed by a HYDRA double agent.

Clay Quartermain is not one of the Howling Commandos of Sgt. Fury in World War II but the newer version of Nick Fury's Howling Commandos which comprises of monsters in which some actually howls.

The new CAPTAIN AMERICA movie will introduce us to the first live representation of the Howling Commandos. Who knows if the movie does well we might actually see a Howling Commandos movie, I for one would like to watch that.

This TV movie was actually pretty good, and a hell of a lot better than the Generation X TV movie that debuted around the same time. If I remember correctly the Helicarrier was an actual aircraft carrier with huge ass jet engines keeping it in the sky.

The Hoff movie was on-demand a year or two ago I think on Showtime or Encore....got to watch it. I don't understand why they didn't go with Hoff in these new movies. So far they have changed Rhodey, Bruce Banner, and Nick Fury. Wish they could keep the same actors.
