Ebert's Comic Book Movie Review History

Ebert's Comic Book Movie Review History

In response to his backlash on bashing KickAss, I've complied a detailed history of Roger Eberts reviews and ratings of comic book movies past. For those who think he's out of tune with the masses, think again...

In response to the Ebert negativity on this site that has people blasting the cinema world's most famous movie critic - I thought I'd show you a quick rundown of his past resume when it comes to reviewing many beloved Comic Book Inspired films.

Don't be so quick to hate on the guy - so what - he didn't like KickAss - that wont stop me from seeing it. 4 stars is a perfect rating by the way...Just incase you didn't know...

Watchmen - 4 Stars

"The film is rich enough to be seen more than once. I plan to see it again, this time on IMAX, and will have more to say about it. I’m not sure I understood all the nuances and implications, but I am sure I had a powerful experience. It’s not as entertaining as “The Dark Knight,” but like the “Matrix” films, LOTR and “The Dark Knight,” it’s going to inspire fevered analysis. I don’t want to see it twice for that reason, however, but mostly just to have the experience again." - Ebert

The Dark Knight - 4 Stars

"Something fundamental seems to be happening in the upper realms of the comic-book movie. “Spider-Man II” (2004) may have defined the high point of the traditional film based on comic-book heroes. A movie like the new “Hellboy II” allows its director free rein for his fantastical visions. But now “Iron Man” and even more so “The Dark Knight” move the genre into deeper waters. They realize, as some comic-book readers instinctively do, that these stories touch on deep fears, traumas, fantasies and hopes. And the Batman legend, with its origins in film noir, is the most fruitful one for exploration." - Ebert

Iron Man - 4 Stars

"At the end of the day it 's Robert Downey Jr. who powers the lift-off separating this from most other superhero movies. You hire an actor for his strengths, and Downey would not be strong as a one-dimensional mighty-man. He is strong because he is smart, quick and funny, and because we sense his public persona masks deep private wounds. By building on that, Favreau found his movie, and it's a good one." - Ebert

Hellboy - 3.5 Stars

Hellboy II - 3.5 Stars

"And once again a strong performance by Ron Perlman as Hellboy. Yes, he's CGI for the most part, but his face and voice and movements inhabit the screen figure, and make him one of the great comic heroes. Del Toro, who preceded "Hellboy II" with "Pan's Labyrinth" (2006) and the underrated "Blade II" (2002), is warming up now for "Doctor Strange" and "The Hobbit." He has an endlessly inventive imagination, and understands how legends work, why they entertain us and that they sometimes stand for something." - Ebert

Spiderman - 2.5 Stars

Spiderman 2 - 4 Stars

Spiderman 3 - 2 Stars

""Spider-Man 3" is, in short, a mess. Too many villains, too many pale plot strands, too many romantic misunderstandings, too many conversations, too many street crowds looking high into the air and shouting "oooh!" this way, then swiveling and shouting "aaah!" that way. And saints deliver us from another dinner date like the one where Peter plans to propose to Mary Jane. You know a movie is in trouble when the climactic romantic scene of the entire series is stolen by the waiter (Bruce Campbell)." - Ebert

Blade - 3 Stars

Blade 2 - 3.5 Stars

Blade 3 - 1.5 Stars

-

I could go on - go check out his entire resume at www.rogerebert.com -

He's usually right on the money.......Just because he doesn't like Kick Ass doesn't mean we should bash the guy - he's usually very much in tune with the comic book movie world and gets it right most of the time.

And now you know.....Now you know.

Nice...He's actually pretty spot on with most movies, not just CBM's. He's one of the few critics I actually pay attention to.

good article man. i don't pay attention to most critics, regardless of who they are, but its cool to see that he shares the same opinions as most of us on this site for a LOT of CBM's.

Ebert is one of the few critics that i have the least qualms with. i agree with almost every review he does.
unlike those sellout critics who don't do it for the love of film but for the money. they don't try and understand the symbolism or the plot of a film. they just want to be entertained. and if God forbid a movie runs longer than 120 minutes, they automatically hate it!
thank you Mr. Ebert for being passionate about film!!!!!

"it's not what a movie is about, but how it is about it" seriously, that's a genius quote used to defend his opinions...without this guy I don't find nightwatch or daywatch, let the t
right one in, etc..

Kudos Roger on a job done well

nicely done. being from chicago myself, he gets a bad rap for being narrow-minded but he is usually spot on. granted i have my own opinion and expectations going into a movie but Ebert is a good-great reviewer.

Great job Kevin. This should shut up the people bitching. He is usually right on the line with how I feel about movies. He is one of the few critics I check before going to see the films. And he rarely spoils the films in his reviews which is nice.

As for people saying he is out of touch, think about this: Ebert is the most respected critic in Hollywood, he is almost an institution in the cinema. Do you guys get paid to review movies?

I disagree with Roger Ebert quite a bit on various films. I've given up on letting other people's oppinion on a film influence my own.

I think he's a great critic, and I've yet to see Kick-Ass but from what I read of his actual review, it seems like his main problem with the movie was about how much violence was in it, and the fact that the violence involved a little girl. So, it stands to reason that even if you agree with him on every other review he has done, but don't mind violence involving children (wow, that sounds a lot more accusing than I intended it to be, but nonetheless) you could still disagree with him here...
