Variety is reporting that the family of the co-creator of "Superman" has been given more control of the character.

Judge Stephen Larson ruled Wednesday that the family of Jerry Siegel, has “recaptured” rights to additional works, including the first two weeks of the daily Superman newspaper comic-strips. The first Superman story was published in 1938 in Action Comics No. 1. For $130, Jerry Siegel and co-creator Joel Schuster signed a release in favor of DC’s predecessor, Detective Comics, and a 1974 court decision ruled they signed away their copyrights forever.

While ownership of the Man of Steel is one point of all this legal activity, the real issue is money and how much Warner Bros. and DC owe the Siegels from profits they collected from Superman since 1999, when the heirs’ recapture of Siegel’s copyright became effective.

It'll all work out…DC/Warner Bros. will settle this before they lose Supes.

Almighty:

You hate this family for attempting to regain their patriarch's creation or the rights thereof? Do you feel the same of songwriters of the past trying to gain their rights and or residuals?

That is an ignorant statement. Not everyone gets the Stan Lee treatment nor the reverence that Gene Roddenberry or George Lucas receive for their creations.

Why, sell the rights to Disney\Marvel of course.

Look, you won't hear me bitchin about the "greedy heirs" to the creators of Superman. Those two guys were broke and destitute for years while DC made tens of millions. It was only through a massive effort of a large contingent of (then) current comic book creators, getting the media involved showing how destitute these guys were while DC was rolling in it, that got DC to give them a modest stipend and credit on the splash page just to avoid the media black eye they were getting from it. I will shed no tears for DC on this one as I have been around long enough to have witnessed all the BS they out those two guys and their families thru for 40 years.

@niknik broke and destitute? are you [frick]ing kidding me? These people have already made MILLIONS off of this character. And I don't see how you can compare these people to Stan Lee, George Lucas, and Gene Roddenberry when the men who ACTUALLY created Superman are dead. The Siegels still receive royalties for the Superman films, but despite how much money they've already made off of a character that's beloved by millions they want to risk having him not be enjoyed by anyone. Its really sad how some people who claim to be comic fans feel sorry for a bunch of greedy assholes mooching off their fathers success rather than feel sorry for the public who won't get to see a decent Superman movie because DC could lose the rights.
