While at Equality Now’s “Make Equality Reality” event this week, Avengers director and writer of several strong female characters gave a speech about his issues with the label 'feminist'. “The word feminist, it doesn't sit with me, it doesn't add up. First of all, on a very base level, just to listen to it. We start with fem. That's good, that's promising, you know, fem, it's nice but it's strong, f is a very porous letter, very inclusive. We go to in. Fem-in. Okay, not as impressive, but they can't all be roses terms sometimes you gotta get from A to B,” he continued. “1st. I hate it. I hate it. Fail on 1st. It's just this little dark, black, it must be hissed. 1st! It's Germanic but not in the romantic way. It's just this terrible ending with this wonderful beginning. This word for me is so unbalanced.”

Whedon summarized his issue with the word, stating “So feminist includes the idea that believing men and women to be equal, believing all people to be people, is not a natural state. That we don't emerge assuming that everybody in the human race is a human, that the idea of equality is just an idea that's imposed on us.”

The speech can be seen in it's entirety in the video below

He's saying "it's" has negative feelings attached to it, like racist or something. Makes it sound sort of exclusive or militant. His other problem with it is that anyone being feminist give the appearance of something different than the norm, and he is saying that what feminism is all about is really the natural state of humanity, so it's weird to separate the viewpoint. I think he has some interesting points. I don't really like the term because since feminism is about equality and treating people with respect, but it's called feminism, there is almost an implication that men don't do that or can't do that, that equality and respect are somehow female traits.

It's funny to me that some women are made uncomfortable by the word "moist", as if it's a vulgarity. It's my favorite way to describe a good cake and it causes my girlfriend to cringe soooo BONUS!!

You guys including Joss, have a very weird definition of feminism. It's called that because it was about getting equal rights for women and treating women like they're equal to men.It was never about respecting and giving equality to PEOPLE unless those people you're referring to are women. The fem comes from the word feminine which is what women are.Men are masculine. That's why we're called he and they're called she.If it was reversed, and we lived in an alternate time-line then the term would be masculinist. It's not that difficult to understand fellas.

Joss and his creations are overrated anyway.

We're all human. Who gives a fudge.
Idk if that's what Joss was trying to say but that's what I always say, I don't believe in racism, sexism, "homophobic" etc etc we're all just beings part of the same species that happen to have opinions.

The article prints -'ist' as '1st'. Now I didn't play the video but from the context I can't imagine it was 'first'. Though 'femifirst' just might appeal to some folk, even Whedon.

Actually Black Widow wasn't treated as a sex object in the actually Avengers movie. She was only sexualized in the advertisements.

I respect Whedon. I'm all for equality but sometimes you get extreme feminists that bad mouth males which in fact makes the extreme feminists to look bad themselves.
