Kevin Smith Wants To Charge Critics To Screen His Movies Early!

Don't make Kevin angry, you wouldn't like him if he gets angry, especially if you were a movie critic that screened his latest film. In fact this upset Kevin so much he threw a rant up on twitter!

I'm a fan of Kevin Smith. His work is funny and entertaining. Kevin brings a certain artistic touch to his films that is not found in the films he has nothing to do with. Pretty much you either like him or not. His latest tirade however is turning movie critics off like nothing else. Kevin got finger happy on twitter in response to the negative reviews 'Cop Out' received. This from Twitter:

"Watching them beat the sh*t out of it was sad. It's called 'Cop Out.' That sound like a very ambitious title to you? You REALLY wanna sh*t in the mouth of a flick that so OBVIOUSLY strived for nothing more than laughs. Was it called 'Schindler's Cop Out'?

Writing a nasty review for 'Cop Out' is akin to bullying a retarded kid who was getting a couple chuckles from the normies by singing AFTERNOON DELIGHT. Suddenly, bully-dudes are doing the bad impression of him, using the 'retart' voice.

And you may impress a couple of low IQ-ers who're like 'Yeah, man! Way to destroy that singing retart!' But, really? All you've done is make fun of something that wasn't doing you any harm and wanted only to give some cats a some fun laughs.

That was it for me. Realized whole system's upside down: so we let a bunch of people see it for free and they sh*t all over it? Meanwhile, people who'd REALLY like to see the flick for free are made to pay? Bullsh*t: from now on, any flick I'm ever involved with, I conduct critics screenings thusly: you wanna see it early to review it? Fine: pay like you would if you saw it next week. Like, why am I giving an arbitrary 500 people power over what I do at all, let alone for free?"

He has a point. Kinda. But the point of an early screening of any movie is to promote it purely from a Movie Critic's point of view. Good, bad, or indifferent. Kevin, dude, chill out, bring us more Jay & Silent Bob, make us laugh some more. Who cares what the haters think or say. Do your thing that put you on the map in the first place.

I'm a Kevin Smith fan, but seriously, I've heard nothing but bad reviews of this film, even from other Smith fans. This just sounds like sour grapes.

I think Kevin should Direct/produce a Super Hero Movie. he knows Daredevil. Maybe that character. Also, you have Clerks 3. Even though, Clerks 2 really seemed like the end all.

"so we let a bunch of people see it for free and they sh*t all over it??

i think HE has things upside down. the critics aren't going to see it because they WANT to. its their jobs. yes, they might be seeing it for free, but that doesn't mean it should automatically get a good review, lol.

its not like they all sat down in a room and said, "okay, we'll let you review this movie early, for free, but you have to give us a good write up." how ridiculous is that??

i like a lot of what Kevin Smith has done, but he needs to quit crying like a baby because his shitty movie got a bad review. its part of making movies, you would think he would know that by now.

I'm a fan of the guy but this just sounds like a temper tantrum over the fact they didnt give his movie positive reviews! :P

I'd like to see him do some more comic book stuff - his short Daredevil run a while ago was great as was his Spider-Man/Black Cat series.

He's talking out of his ample ass. Cop Out mat strive for laughs, but it fails miserably..its not funny, unless you happen to be easily amused, its that simple. I think his Clerks films are hilarious, and at least a few scenes from all of his others(Bar Zack And Miri) but Cop Out was an anti-comedy. I have had funnier fillings. My lampshade has cracked better jokes. Its shit.

The trailer looked horrible, every joke was an eye roller. I'll wait for this to come out on video, but Smith hasn't been doing very well with his movies.

Dogma, Clerks 2 (though had some moments) Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, and Jersey Girl all very bad movies, and this looks to be no exception...sigh.

Personall, the only movies I thought are worth a shit is Mallrats, Clerks, Clerks Animated Series, and the first half of Chasing Amy.

I miss the Kevin Smith who gave us original comedy.. maybe not the best comedy (to some) but clerks thru JASBSB is all great stuff. Then IMO he abused his fans with clerks 2 with such lame and obnoxious humor, it was everyhting i like aobut his other movies, only moree obvious, more childish and less creative or fun. It was an R rated kids movie to me.. Now hes coming out with a cop comedy, and hes mad critics dont like it? bad boys, starsky and hutch, rush hour and sooooooooo many other movies have come out semi recently with same concept.. ok we get it they are pertners and they dont see eye to eye but they have eachother backs after a while... insert a few funny jokes and you have the recipe to an unoriginal movie that is bound to make critics wonder why you made it in the first place.. hell in this day and age you should have just rebooted rush hour, everyone else is rebooting lol.. either way kevin, you annoyed me when you think you were awesome shitting on the heckler in i believe a comiccon convension? idk but someone posted an article aobut it a while back.. all you did was give lame insults to the guy who was yelling shit (which is also messed up) that you shoulda listend to, because maybe that guy was telling u "hey fat ass, stop going down hill with ur movies or ull end up making a shitty cop movie" and then you sold out big time when you did numerous episodes on the tween shit show, degrassi... kevin, relearn your roots and man up. cause and effect.. you make a shit movie, its gonna get called a shit movie...

@ror, thank you for bringing up zach and miri.. i actually forgot how terrible that thing was.. he has digressed so much, his older shit had so much more story and intelligence than stupid sex jokes like poop hiting a camera mans face.. i think hes jsut gotten lazy... i know most of you are against him, but im a seth rogan fan, and for that matter i also like elizabeth banks, and its a shame they probably read the concept nad the direct and thought it would be golden, and he went all wrong with it

I like em both too. Rogen gets shit for playing the same role all the time but that isn't even accurate. He's a funny guy and a convincing actor. Funny People is a great film, Hell I didn't even mind Adam Sandler in it! Same with Banks, she's great.

I thought Jay and Silent Bob was a good comedy movie over all. I haven't seen Cop Out to comment on it. While I may have first responded the same as Bob did, I have to say it is a lil uncalled for. Almost EVERY movie out there has bad reviews before it gets released. Especially with how movies are a dime a dozen. Not literally but movies are made SOOO often that you don't see a true EPIC movie hardly anymore. But that aside, that's just a part of society/ media. Some will be for it, some neutral, some against it. That's with EVERYTHING, not just movies.

this is a bit irrelevant but the one point I always like to make is this:
when it comes to interviews, you always hear someone say something like "it was such an honor working with so and so". I've never heard of an interview where the person says "oh, that so and so is such a f'n Ahole". The same for movie trailers, lol. You never see a commercial saying two thumbs down (not up) .5 stars (not 4). Lol, I know that would defeat the purpose but I still think it's funny to consider.

Bottom line is the same as with the whole Captain America casting controversy. Sit back and STFU people! There is no way to please EVERYONE! let the movie's numbers upon release do the talking! That's where the real test lies! It's not it trying to make everyone happy, it's about making sure (as best they can) that the movie is a success! (which is not exactly determined by how many people like it)!

Best example I can come up with: transformers 2 has damn near set a record (if it didn't) in the box office! YET, the movie in general was not exactly excellent.

Kevin Smith makes me sick nowadays, whether he's complaining about getting kicked off of a flight for being the human equivalent of a Zeppelin, or now complaining about getting shit reviews for another piece of theatrical garbage. If he spent half the time he does in complaining on writing a new movie he might actually crank out something worth watching...

Ror, I'm glad I'm not the only one who enjoys Rogen, I like him as a comedian and actor. Honestly think Green Hornet is going to be a good movie, you can see he's dedicated, hell he even dieted and worked out for the damn film. That's impressive by comedian standards.

I'm also relieved not to see any Kevin Smith fanboys freaking out saying everything he makes is amazing, because that's far from it. Like Frank Miller, stick to the books man, stick to the books.

I don't mean any offense, but I don't understand how this makes front page on COMICBOOKmovie.com when it doesn't have anything to do with CBMs. Don't get me wrong, I have seen most of Kevin Smith's movies too, and AM a fan of his comic work too (especially if he actually finishes a run, haha). I just know of a lot of guys on this site that would have had this article deleted, that's all.

AGAIN - not attacking you Jman, or anyone else...I enjoyed the article. I'm not looking for a bunch of people to come and get angry because I said this, I'm just confused and it seems like a different set of rules and makes people confused as to the type of articles they submit. :-/ Is this article ok because he has written comic books in the past? Just trying to learn.

Not a Kevin Smith movie fan. Son, if you want to dance, you gotta play the fiddler. Deal with with it. Critics do what they are paid to do....critique your movie. My thoughts are...Kevin..

Well i for one, don't like ANY of his films, never have. Granted i haven't seen Mallrats or Chasing Amy but i've seen the rest and i fail to see why their concidered great or even funny. BUT... what i do very much enjoy from Kevin Smith is his stand up. I could freakin' listen to that guy all day. I love the way he thinks and voices his opinions, i just don't like the way he produces stuff. So Kev... here's what you should do. Come on over to Canada, i know you like it here, have a sit down with the heads at "Tim Hortons" and talk over a sponsorship deal, and go on a stand up tour and just talk about shit all over Canada. You film it, and call it "Livin' the life, eating the dream" and don't forget to charge the critics to see it first ;)

Oh and Tracy Morgan sucks ass! That should have been a given. I mean, who actually laughed at whatever the hell he said in the trailers to begin with??? That was a shot in the foot on itself. He makes Chris Tucker seem funnier than Richard Prior.

I wonder what the studio would say after they paid millions to make the movie and he refuses to let critics watch it. Bet they wouldn't appreciate that.
