President Obama Addresses STAR WARS/STAR TREK Mix Up

After confusing both sci-fi franchises and mixing up Spock's "Vulcan mind meld" with the Star Wars universe's "Jedi Mind Trick", the POTUS is at it again - only this time on purpose, making a Captain Kirk/force related joke at an event over the weekend..

The geeks had a field day when President Obama mixed up Trek and Wars at a press conference in early March, when he responded to a CNN correspondent's query about sequestration by replying that he hoped he could "somehow do a Jedi mind meld with these folks and convince them to do what's right.". As any fanboy/girl worth their salt knows, Star Trek's Mr Spock does a "vulcan mind meld", while the "Jedi mind trick" is something practiced by the Jedi Knights from Star Wars. Obviously not a big deal but we had a bit of fun with it, as did the President himself - and he continues to! Addressing journalists on Saturday evening at the Gridiron Dinner Obama referenced the recent slip-up "After a very public mix-up last week, my communications team has provided me with an easy way to distinguish between Star Trek and Star Wars. Spock is what Maureen Dowd calls me. Darth Vader is what John Boehner calls me." Obama summed up his remarks by making an even more obvious mix up, this time as a joke. "And in the words of one of my favorite Star Trek characters -- Captain James T. Kirk of the USS Enterprise -- 'May the force be with you.'"

Why is there any type of "flame war" over this? No matter where you stand politically, isn't it awesome that the President is also a geek and makes these type of jokes?

Obama,

Instead of making SW/ST references, how about you answer Rand Paul's question whether you have the power to drone strike American citizens on US soil.

^BOOM! and so it begins. HAHAHAHA, cue the infighting the political banter, then IM53 and tea trying to calm things down, a few trolls along the way and 10 pages later we'll be no better than we were at the beginning.

@ Superman1974 - Teleprompter, not teleproter.

@ TheHeat - They said no already, but if you leave The U.S. you're a dead man. Yikes...

@ anyone who cared - who cares, I don't even know what a Vulcan mind meld is, I doubt BHO knows either.

I just don't like when politics are brought up on here unless it involves a comic story like Obama and Spidey or Clinton and Superman among many many others. With that said it makes no difference.

When he condemns Nolanism and the Nolan extremists then I might listen to what he has to say.
Some say Obama is a Nolanite.

I don't consider President Obama a fellow 'geek.' He's a Generation X politician and AS such, I would EXPECT him to reference mainstream popular culture from the eras he's grown up in from time to time.

SURE it's cool to hear these references. You know what's COOLER? Hearing him reference American heroes like Chris Kyle ONCE instead of Whitney Houston numerous times.

When I was a kid, I couldn't imagine a President who was cool enough to read Spider-Man...or was even FAMILIAR with comic books and my interests in general.

Now that I'm older, I realize it's not as important. What's more is that I'm seeing the President I wished for as a kid not living up to those ideals I first learned about FROM comics and so-called 'geek culture.'

"With great power comes great responsibility" isn't just a quip you rattle off at a campaign rally, Mr. President. In YOUR job ESPECIALLY, it's a truism you should live by every day.
