Remembering Wizard Magazine

To many of us, Wizard Magazine nurtured the geek in us all. A salute to the great fan mag

Well today the web lit up with the news that long time geek magazine, Wizard, was closing publication immediately. Some website state that sister magazine, Toyfare, will still be around while other rumors swirl that Toyfare will suffer the same fate as Wizard. Personally, I took this as pretty damn depressing news since I've been reading both publications since the fourth grade, but I'm also surprised that Wizard has lasted as long as it has seeing how the ever growing internet had definitely weakened the magazine, seeing how we all have plenty of websites to go to for our toy and comic news.

I think it's safe to say that I wouldn't be the fan that I am today without Wizard Magazine. As a kid, I had a small interest in comics but really lived for action figures and had built up a pretty massive collection of any superhero toy I could find. Then one day my dad brought home an issue of Toyfare, figuring an action figure fanatic like me would like it. I haven't missed an issue since.

Soon I found out that Toyfare had an sister mag called Wizard, and I soon picked up an issue of that. As a kid, Wizard didn't interest me as much because it didn't have the sweet toys like Toyfare, but as I got older and my interest in toys faded, I started liking Wizard more and more.

I had a few comic books but didn't even begin to know how to collect them, which ones to read, what monthly series were the best, etc. Wizard gave me a great jumping off point by introducing me to creators like Frank Miller, Jeph Loeb, Chris Claremont, etc. If Wizard praised a certain graphic novel or storyline I would immediately run out and read it. In no time I had built up a massive store of geek knowledge, I became a sort of go to guy for my friends if they needed any geek knowledge. I could always count on Wizard to recommend what series to check out and for the latest news on my real love: comic book movies.

I ended up graduating high school and went off to college and sadly didn't have the time or money to keep with with comics, so Wizard became my life line into what was happening in DC or Marvel. It kept me a fan during a very busy and hectic four years and I could always depend on it for a good scoop or a good laugh. Now as I look back, I can see how much Wizard evolved, from a publication dedicated to strictly comics to a magazine dedicated to all facets of geek culture. In whatever form, I always looked forward to picking it up every month to see what was happening in the world of comics

But as Captain Kirk said in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan,"But it should be noted that this death takes place in the shadow of new life".

All is not lost as Wizard will continue as a online publication, and as we all know, death in comic books never lasts. Perhaps one day, we will see Wizard make a surprise comeback on comic book shelves everywhere.

Nice eulogy for an influential magazine. I didn't always agree with their conclusions, but disagreement is half the fun of fandom.

DAMN! ;'(

Without WIZARD, I won't even be a comic fan, and thus I won't even be interested in this site!

You live in my (Or our) heart!

I'll always have fond memories of Wizard. Been reading it off and on for the better part of 17 years now.

Had no idea that the Wizard I picked up tonight was going to be the last....

Wizard in it's heydey was AWESOME! Damn! I loved that magazine, because it was about comics, all comics. Unfortunately it seriously devolved into basically a brochure for Marvel comics, Marvel Toys and Marvel films.
They also instigated that CGC Crap.

Wizard WAS great, but it died as a pretty crappy mag I wouldn't use for toilet paper.

I love Wizard Mag and I liked how they even made fun of themselves for sporting so many Wolvie covers. I used to get the cards and Posters. Remember the time line posters? Those were awesome. I think it is garbage that things like this change.

It's the end of an era. As a comic book artist, my work would not be what it is without the basic training articles that Wizard put out. Pour one out for a fallen friend.

Ever since I started my new job, I find myself with less and less time to comment on articles.. I still come on this site (which for the record I love) frequently but don't get as involved as I used to. Having read this article however, I felt compelled to share.

I too grew up reading Wizard and loved the magazine. Too me, it was filled with comic related information and humor that I simply could not get enough of. I also remember sometime ago (maybe 2 or 3 yrs) reflecting on how much the publication had changed. I don't necessarily agree with everything nikgrid stated (except for the fact that I also would not use it as toilet paper), but I can tell you that the reasons I stopped reading Wizard had nothing to do with the internet, but everything to do with the lack of content and the obvious decline in quality. I seriously remember the last couple of times I bought it, just stopping half way through and asking my self "WTF happened to this magazine?" and more importantly "Why am I still spending $5 on this crap?" It's no wonder Wizard is done and the internet (for once) is not to blame. Those responsible for the poor quality of work put in it though, the blame lies squarely on their heads.

Wizard, I shall remember you as you once were in your prime and will forever have fond memories of all the time we spent together on the toilet. Fair thee well old friend and R.I.P.

This was very depressing news! I have been reading and collecting Wizard since 1995, Toyfare since 2003. It definitely made me the nerdy fanboy i am today and for that i am grateful! I will treasure all of my boxes of back copies forever.

To the Wizard Staff, thank you for years of awesomeness! Your work has been greatly appreciated! Cheers!

Wizard was a big part of any fanboy's life, including mine. Same with Toyfare(which the folks at Robot Chicken totally ripped off). I remember me and my brother buying them each month, then fighting over who got to read which one first. Adios amigo, we had a hell of a run.

Being there from the start and getting the wizard spiderman overpower card(awesome card game btw) I followed the magazine faithfully for years. But about 3 years ago I wrote them a formal letter stating to them I would no longer be buying or even reading the magazine due to poor articles, a lack of actual articles filling the book and a very sub par price guide in the back. One that also dwindled down from 40 pages in the begining, to 10 by my last issue. Im sorry it turned out like for them, but I do still support the con here in chicago.

Peace out Wizard.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! I've been reading that mag for more than 15 years, it had its ups and downs but I still liked it. The comic industry really needs Wizard to keep going!

I read it from the beginning until I stopped collecting comics about 10 years ago. Even when money got tight and I had to stop reading certain titles I kept buying Wizard. It was funny and informative. RIP Wizard.

Now that's a huge bummer. I lived for this mag back in the years between 2004-2009; then its quality went down, along with the number of pages (HALF!). It's really sad to see it finished. Still, GREAT while it lasted.

I'm really not surprised. I used to like Wizard but since they changed their format about a year or so ago I have not really cared for it as much. I'm sure someone will step in with another publication and fill in the gap before too long.

Anyone remember HERO magazine... I thought it was a better mag than WIZARD but I guess it wasn't meant to be.
