The Losers Director back to working on Ronin

The Losers Director back to working on Ronin

Sylvain White who is now about to finish wrapping up his DC Project The Losers, is not ready to delve back to another DC Project which is Frank Miller's Ronin.

In an interview with Sylvain White when asked about returning on making the adaptation of Miller's Ronin, here's what he told SHH:

"That’s something I had to let go of for a period of time while I was directing The Losers but I’m back here in Los Angeles and as I’m finishing post-production on The Losers, I will be diving back into the development of Ronin."

He gave us his thoughts about the project:

"It’s a very complex graphic novel and it needs very careful attention. Of course to make a movie of that scale, you need a lot of money to pay it justice, especially with the incredible visuals that Frank Miller has in it, but at the same time, in order to get a lot of money to make the movie, it has to have enough commercial appeal, so I’m trying to balance those two things together to make the movie accessible but still smart and throw with all the great ideas and grand ideas that it has."

Not really familiar with the story so here's a wiki on it:

Ronin is a comic book limited series published between 1983 and 1984, by DC Comics. The series was written and drawn by Frank Miller with artwork painted by Lynn Varley. It takes place in a dystopic near-future New York in which a ronin is reincarnated. The six-issue work shows some of the strongest influences of manga on Miller's style, both in the artwork and narrative style.

Seems interesting. I'll watch!

de niro movie was bad-ass, but this samurai flick should be be epic, frank miller doesnt make some of the greatest graphic novels for nothing!!!

thankfully we wont see any airbrushed-on abdominal muscles ala 300, as most of the cast will be wearing samurai leather armor.

anyone ever see the original movie SHOGUN ASSASSIN? in my opinion the greatest use of blood effects ive ever seen on film. fire hose style spraying, just like a real jugular has been slashed!!!! the coolest was how he'd slash like 8 guys and they would stand there spraying blood EVERYWHERE and wouldnt fall dead until he shook the blood from his sword and placed it back in its scabbard, as if on cue, BRILLIANT!!!
if they immitate that style of samurai slasher blood fest, than this will not dissapoint!!!!
the more detached limbs and spraying stumps the better!!!!

Anyone seen a movie called "Goemon"? That movie has an incredible visual style. Anyway look for the trailer on youtube. The movie is directed by Kazuaki Kiriya who also directed the live action "Casshern".

Goemon is loosely based off the title character from "Legend of Mystical Ninja" an SNES game and later an anime(remember that game?"). It's a period piece that involves more of a Japanese feudal war story,Shinobi's and fight scenes.

I own both movies and honestly can say(though both are subtitled)I haven't seen anything like these movies visually. Ronin would look cool done that way!

Haha... if I had one I would... they're so rare and very expensive!!!! Around 100 bucks at your nearest comic book store... I had to get it from the library once just to read it... I should just spent 100 and get it...

I read Ronin and loved it. I agree it will be tough to translate. They will end up changing some of the best parts I bet.

Not to sound like an echo, but yes they will have a hell of a time adapting this story. Ronin is such an odd comic, but if done right will be the best of Frank Miller's stories to come to life. I read it a few years back and was stunned at what an awesome story it was.

I just hope it's not one of those movies that you have to have read the comic to get. I've read it a few times and the story is still ridiculously hard to follow.

I love Millar's comics, but this is going to be REALLY hard (and expensive) to re-create.

I read it about 6 yrs ago. I loved it as much as I love all of Frank Miller's other stuff (which is a lot). I'm not sure if this movie would have as much commercial appeal as say Sin City or a Dark Knight Returns movie might. A sci-fi samurai story is kind of a niche genre. But who knows? It could work. If they can find enough money to do this flick, and do it justice, I say more power to 'em. I'd see it.

Don't know how international sales work for Amazon, but it's cheap enough on this link.

It's pretty d@mned beautiful as samurai tales go. If they gave this the 300 treatment it should out-do that movie by leaps and bounds in the "epic" dept.

It's a little esoteric as a read but leave it to hollywood to find a way to water it down enough that avg. movie-goers will leave feeling satisfied. His real challenge is keeping it smart and stylish enough to please the sci-fi,samurai and comic geek crowds. This is a dream project if it's done well; part Kirasowa/ part Phillip K Dick.

Also, contrary to what this listing claims, the book isn't 302 pages long. It's a standard 4-6 issue thick GN.
