It's not secret I'm huge on Mortal Kombat, so when I heard they were making a reboot I was excited because I get to see my favorite videogame on the big screen. But when I saw Rebirth, I was disgusted. I hated what he did with the whole thing, It wasn't Mortal Kombat. Mortal Kombat: Legacy was a truer adaptation to the games and I really liked it, I'm not a fan of changing something to make it more real but Legacy was able to make it work, especially Episode 6: Raiden. But last September when they announced that he would be directing the remake I was happy but pissed at the same time. Unless he sticks to the games and focuses more on the story than the blood and gore but keeping that blood and gore, I might enjoy it but here is what he HAS to do to make rather watchable, enjoyable and overall just flat out good.

1: As stated before, focus on the story. Blood and gore come second, if you put the goodies first before the story then it's just gonna be a gore fest with no story and I hate those. That's all the fricking zombie movies in my opinion except for Zombieland.

2: Keep some humor. Every movie has some humor, but movies like this need an comic relief, this is where you gonna portray the Johnny Cage character properly. Keep the humor understandable in each situation but also make him so cocky he does pop off with something that's funny and what Johnny Cage would actually say.

3: NO REALISM. Everybody loves realism in alot of fantasy movies these days, with the exception of mostly Stryker, the games have absolutely NO realism so therefore there shouldn't be any realism. You take out the realism, then your just taking away alot of what makes Mortal Kombat good and different.

4: No generic costumes, make each characters look unique to them please. Also make Baraka at least frightening, it's kinda bad I laughed when I saw Baraka in Mortal Kombat: Legacy and pissed when I saw him in Rebirth.

5: Please add more characters to the movie so it's longer and go in depth with all of the films heros.

6: Instead of making the film a Lui Kang movie, it also needs to be a Kung Lao film with a side plate of the other characters obviously. No, Kung Lao was not in the first Mortal Kombat film.

7: No same palette characters like the original games. With the exception of Sektor and Cyrax for a sequel, no ninjas in the films should EVER look the same. They all need to be unique, I personally feel Reptile should look like the newer game because it fits the character more and he comes off more threatening.

8: Mention Shinnok because it's his fault the the tournament was created and bring Quan Chi in for the films.

9: Most of the fights need to be done for story reasons. Not all should be because of story reasons though, at least that's my way of thinking.

10: Have the Scorpion and Sub-Zero rivalry be like that of Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow but more violent and have a bigger role in the film, also tease certain characters in the film. Like Kenshi for instance, he is part of Shang Tsung's past, that was for example.

Whatya guys think? Comment below and be respectful, also would you like to see some of my begining of my Mortal Kombat scriptment I'm writing? Again leave comments below.

they were alright but you do need names that put bums in seats.

I'm no Mortal Kombat fan, but your passion and specific point have the power to convince. However, I do think every movie needs to have a certain degree of realism to make personal stories interesting.

Also, even though your passion is evident in the article, it would be much more effective if you tried to be slightly more eloquent. Try to refrain from using pissed or other colloquialisms. Remember eloquence is forceful but not necessarily vulgar.

Good stuff though.

@Marvel72

As for needing star names to put bums in seats...Wasnt there a rumor last month or so that Ryan Reynolds was up for playing Johnny Cage...

A good big name to play jonnhy Cage to draw a crowd?

Or just another typiccal Ryan Reynolds role hes gonna play the same as everything else?

@Marvel72: I don't think A list actors are always necessary, especially with something like this.

Seems pretty fascinating! I read your ghost rider trilogy post, seemed very good! Maybe if your script is good I could try to animate some of it, we can go for a test if you'd like.

The games were adamant about escaping reality because they were video games after all, if people wanted reality, we would stare out our windows all day. This hype around things realistic is almost a gimmick now, and certainly some movies NEED to be realistic, but movies like this, not so much. It should be believable, sure, but not realistic. Believable, and realistic are not the same thing. It isn't realistic for a someone to pop a meter long blade out of his forearm, but I can believe it for the sake of watching the film.

I thought Mortal Kombat Legacy was an awesome series and I want them to make more. My favorites were the episodes with Michael Jai White in them because he was awesome. I hope they make a movie similar to those.

1. Zombie movies aren't about story, they are about survival/atmosphere. Weird comparison to make here.

2. How much humor are you willing to take? Are you saying it should all be narrowed into Johnny Cage, or should there be other things like Babalities and Friendships? Personally, I thought the first movie handled comic relief very well, without the whole film being a giant joke. They should follow the 1995 example.

3. No Realism, no go. Horrible idea. There's a reason filmmakers are trying more and more to ground their movies; so they can be relatable in some way to audiences. Without it, you have 0 connection with the viewers. Go too far off the deep end, and you've lost your watchers before you ever had them. The whole reason we get excited to see things become movies is in how they bring it to LIFE- how they make it REAL. Otherwise, you get what you don't want: the feeling like you're watching someone else play a videogame.

Stryker is real sure, but so are Shaolin Monks. And Special Ops soldiers. Earthrealm's heroes are easily realistic. The trick is finding the balance between what we recognize from our world, and the fantastical elements of Outworld. You said you liked Legacy, which did an excellent job of making things realistic, (see: your Raiden episode) while not losing the essence of what MK is.

I don't know that we absolutely NEED Shinnok or Kenshi or Quan Chi. Yes, they have backstory that connects to the origins of the tournament, but you could still make a good movie without them. On a basic level, all we really need is Shang Tsung and Shao Kahn on that front. With obviously Raiden. You don't want info overload or to throw in too much in one film. Like the games themselves, these are the types of things that can explored in sequels and prequels later on.

Agreed with the rest.

What I meant by realism is by taking the fantasy and the sorcery out of it and have it based on a scientific level which unless it's for a character like Jax or Sonya, it shouldn't happen. The humor I'm not talking like everytime he's on screen but make him a smartass that you just wanna knock out but in a way you still like him because he's a dick. Also for characters like Shinnok and Quan Chi, well Kenshi he would be could but wouldn't be necessary. Quan Chi and Shinnok I feel could be used through out a trilogy but have as villains for the final film. I personally think it's because their involvment and their importantce to the origin of the tournament and after (no deadly alliance, deception kind of thing, despite them being good games) is why they should be in there.

I see your point. Something that could be interesting is if we saw a kind of parallel subplot going on. Quan Chi/Shang Tsung's uneasy rivalry on one side, and Raiden/Shinnok's roles on the other.
Believe me, an expanded cast (some in big roles, others in small set-ups) would be so great to see.

I'm curious what other episodes you liked from Legacy. I might be in the minority, but I thought "Kitana and Melina" was another good one. It was the most mythology-based of all the episodes

I liked all the episodes from Legacy but my favorites were: Raiden, Sektor and Cyrax, Johnny Cage and Scorpion and Sub-Zero (both parts obviously). I mean the jax/sonya/kano episodes and the kitana and mileena ones were good too but I perfered the others more.
