IP MAN Star Donnie Yen Talks ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY

Set between the events Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: A New Hope, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will focus on a group of Rebels, as they unite to try and steal plans for the Empire's ultimate weapon, the Death Star.

With the film set to hit theaters December of next year, Hong Kong action star Donnie Yen spoke with THR about the upcoming film, and revealed how he is proud to be a part of the franchise. "I am very proud to be the first Chinese actor cast in Rogue One. It was a good and benevolent character," Yen said. "I felt like I was in a theme park every day when shooting Rogue One in Pinewood Studios in Britain." Shortly after he added, "I have learned and experienced a lot."

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story isn't the only film that Donnie Yen will star in next year. He will also reprise his role in Ip Man 3 which opens in Hong Kong and China only a week after Rogue One. Is Yen worried about how the final (?) Ip Man film will compare to the Star Wars spin-off in the box office? Not at all. Either way, he wins. "When Star Wars succeeds at the box office, I succeed, because I'm now part of the family. Other than that, I feel like there should be options for the audience. I will definitely go see Star Wars, but I'm even more determined to go see Ip Man 3."

Starring Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Jiang Wen, Forest Whitaker, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, and Riz Ahmed, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is set to be released on December 16th, 2016. Share your thoughts on this news in the comment section below!

I can't believe Disney is planning on releasing a Star Wars movie every year from now on. What a terrible time to be alive.

MexicanSuperman - Those guys were more than wasted! They should have been casted as the Knights of Ren.

Agreed, but those guys are a catch 22. I cannot think of a single person they could have squared off against, without making the other person look like a complete amateur. Even in the way that they hold themselves, you know that they know what they are doing. Given that, and the fact that a speaking part is likely out, they probably did about as much as they could with them. Hopefully they'll start getting a little more exposure to western cinema.

Also, is it just me, or is Donnie Yen blind in that Rogue One picture?

I love Star Wars and am all about the idea to introduce stories that take place outside the focus of the Skywalker lineage, but I think the time setting of this movie, as well as when its released (Inbetween episode VII and VIII) is going to really confuse the general audience. I also think that by releasing these movies so rapidly, the very awe and prestige that accompanies these movies will fade away with the over-saturation. Also, based on the time frame it seems pretty damn likely that there will be little to no lightsaber involvement, which is hands down the most entertaining part of the star wars franchise. I'd just go episode VII-IX, and then start anew in the star wars universe either way before or way after the Skywalker/Clone wars stories.
