ALIEN: ROMULUS - Fede Alvarez's Movie Secures August 16 Debut; First Poster Released

Fed Alvarez's upcoming Alien movie has finally been given an official title, and we also have a somewhat bizarre promo poster featuring a Xenomorph reaching for a human baby (maybe he's hungry?).

20th Century Studios (via SFFGazette.com) has finally shared some details on Fede Alvarez's upcoming Alien movie, which is confirmed to be titled Alien: Romulus (we've been using this title for a while, but now it's official).

The somewhat vague synopsis reads: "Young people from a distant world must face the most terrifying life form in the universe."

The movie is set for an August 16 release later this year, and stars Priscilla’s Cailee Spaeny, with Isabela Merced, Aileen Wu, Spike Fearn, David Jonsson and Archie Renaux in supporting roles.

While chatting to Variety on the red carpet of the Gotham Awards last year, Spaeny revealed that Romulus takes place between the events of Ridley Scott's original Alien and James Cameron's sequel, Aliens.

“It’s supposed to slot in between the first movie and the second movie,” Spaeny told the site. “They brought the same team from ‘Aliens,’ the James Cameron film. The same people who built those xenomorphs actually came on and built ours. So getting to see the original design with the original people who have been working on these films for 45-plus years and has been so much of their life has been really incredible.”

Of course, this doesn't necessarily mean that this project will have any direct connection to either film, as this gives Alvarez a lot of room to play with.

At the end of Alien, Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) goes into cryo-sleep, and when she's finally discovered at the beginning of Aliens, we're told that she's been in stasis for 57 years.

“My first film was big-budget sci-fi,” Spaeny continues, referring to her role in Pacific Rim: Uprising. “I feel like I’m going back to that world. And I have so much fun. I like trying to do as many different things as I can. So I swapped my high heels and my beehive for spacesuits and lots of wire work. … I love watching those old ‘70s, ‘80s action sci-fi films. And I’m such a fan of that IP and Sigourney Weaver. It’s legendary to get to be a part of it.”

While there is always a chance this film will be connected to the previous instalments in the franchise, it is being described as a reboot. Whatever the case may be, it's probably safe to assume that it won't continue the divisive plot lines that played out in Ridley Scott's Prometheus and Alien: Covenant - although Scott will produce under his Scott Free banner.

Apparently, the legendary filmmaker was intrigued by an idea Alvarez pitched him on a few years ago, and called him out of the blue last year to see if he had any interest in developing it.

Hulu is also working on an Alien TV series with Noah Hawley (Fargo; Legion) that's expected to premiere at some point next year. Whether both projects will be linked in any way remains to be seen.

We also have a first promo poster for Alien: Romulus, which depicts an unusually friendly-looking Xenomorph reaching for a human infant. What could this signify for the plot of the movie? Your guess is as good as ours!

UPDATE: The poster has been revealed to be fan-made.

rewatched Prometheus and Covenant just to see if i was too harsh on them originally. i wasnt. hopefully this can be the "Prey" of the Alien franchise.

@DemonTweeks - Covenant is way better than Prometheus script-wose but still has problems
GeneralZod

@McMurdo - The opposite for me: I think Prometheus is a great plot (with some bizarre script moments, but I let it go). Covenant's plot, at least the very start (technically, the "Crossing"), ruined the rest of the film.

@GeneralZod - too many dumb characters in Prometheus. Every scientist did the opposite of what they should be doing in every situation. What do you mean by the Crossing? I'm unaware
GeneralZod
GeneralZod - 2/10/2024, 6:07 PM
@McMurdo - The Crossing is a roughly five-minute short directed by Scott showing the beheaded David and Dr. Shaw traveling from the Prometheus planet to the Engineers' planet. Search for it on YouTube, it's really good.

@McMurdo - there is another short from the Covenant Blu Ray that I can't locate. It's the creation of David. Creepy and cool.

Weren't Remus and Romulus wolves that gave birth to Rome? With that in mind the poster and synopsis are extra interesting.
I'd still like to see Scott's trilogy concluded tho. I love covenant, super underrated
Blergh
Blergh - 2/9/2024, 7:08 AM
@ProfessorWhy - they were orphaned babies nurtured by a wolf mother and raised by her.
Both ended up building a city together but couldn’t agree on which hill they would start building.
Thus they built two separate cities.

Depending on which version you subscribe to either Remus attacked Romulus because he needed building materials but ended up killed or Romulus attacked and killed Remus for building materials.

Either way Romulus killed Remus and built Rome.

I don’t understand the criticism people are giving the name.

I’m pretty sure that the title is merely the name of their space station. Think of the previous names in the franchise: Nostromo, Sulaco, Narcissis, Auriga, Juggernaut, Prometheus, Covenant… Romulus has to be the next spaceship/station.
