AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER Isn't Currently On Track To Break U.S. Box Office Records

We have some very early box office projections for Avatar: The Way of Water ahead of its release next month, and even a 12-year wait for the Avatar sequel doesn't mean it will break records in the U.S.

There's now less than a month to go until Avatar: The Way of Water splashes down into theaters, but can the sequel possibly hope to live up to its record-breaking predecessor at the box office?

Despite a brief tussle with Avengers: Endgame back in 2019, the 2009 movie is still the highest-grossing blockbuster of all time, with over $2.9 billion globally. Believe it or not, however, Avatar only made $77 million during its opening weekend, with positive word-of-mouth (mostly down to the groundbreaking 3D effects) ensuring it had legs both domestically and overseas.

So, what does the future hold in store for Avatar: The Way of Water?

According to early projections from Box Office Pro (via SFFGazette.com), the sequel is currently on track to open somewhere between $135 million - $175 million. In terms of what it will make by the time all is said and done in the U.S., it should gross a total of $475 million - $720 million, with the latter figure actually a little less than what Avatar managed.

We don't know whether this follow-up will be released in China (it seems doubtful given how few U.S. movies have found their way there lately) but between these more conservative-than-expected estimates and the way the pandemic has affected box office takings, it's hard to imagine Avatar: The Way of Water reaching the same heights as the first movie.

Considering we've been waiting thirteen years for the sequel, we're a little shocked that it's not even close to having an opening weekend on the same level as movies like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Similar to 2009, we'd guess this one will break records over time rather than during those first few days.

Either way, a third movie has been shot, so we're getting that whatever happens. While Avatar: The Way of Water isn't going to flop, we do wonder if it will be deemed as a disappointment if it makes a penny less than $2 billion (which is ridiculous).

Avatar: The Way of Water arrives in theaters on December 16.

I didn’t get the hype for the first one. And it would be nice for the sequel to not do as well just so Cameron can make some pissy comments about comic films ruining Hollywood

Not interested.

That’s a really really big number to be tracking at, especially with this being the only big movie of this type during the holidays, don’t know how anyone could legitimately spin this as anything but a huge positive.

What a dumbass headline that applies to nearly every movie of all time. Can’t wait for “Ant-Man 3 Will Make Some Money In Theatres” and of course “Brad Pitt May Act In Another Movie At Some Point In The Future.”

It’s almost like the last movie made most of its money on a trend that’s now essentially dead and putting out a sequel over 10 years after the first one led almost all the hype to die down. I’ll be watching this but I here almost no one talking about it

Enough with attributing the pandemic to a movies success or failure.

I'm sure the movie will make money. There won't be much in the way of competition for a few months after release. It surely won't break any records but it will turn some sort of profit.

It will get heavy exposure thanks to Disney and by the time number 3 comes out, 1 and 2 will be re released again with a nice amount of excitement leading into it.

People wishing Cameron to fail just to 'teach him a lesson' is kind of dumb in my opinion.

I'm there opening night.

Also how are they 'tracking' numbers when booking tickets for the movie still isn't available??

Avatar sucks and it’s a shame Cameron is wasting this twilight years on these films..

Who know maybe he might release it 100 times so it can finally crack 1 billion

This movie is going to be big although I don’t think it will outgross the original which stands at almost $3 billion. Word of mouth will propel it and has virtually no competition for almost two months so it could rack up a lot of dough.

I can see it opening around $140/150m and then legging it to something around $600m for the time being. Which would be amazing, by the way.

Its making $1B, obviously, but its making a lot less than expected (probably NWH numbers).
