20th Century Studios has dropped a new poster and trailer for Avatar: The Way of Water (via SFFGazette.com), James Cameron’s highly anticipated, first follow-up to his Academy Award-winning Avatar, the highest-grossing movie of all time. Its #1 spot was cemented with a re-release back in September that puts it well ahead of Avengers: Endgame).

In this new trailer, war comes to Pandora and we get a glimpse at the incredible underwater visuals that promise to be as groundbreaking as the first movie's 3D effects. We don't learn much about the plot, unfortunately, but it's obvious that the focus is going to be shifted to Jake and Neytiri's growing family as an all-new conflict arises courtesy of the evil RDA.

As for that poster, it just feels like classic Avatar, and it's getting hard not to be excited for what's to come this December. This feels like it has all the makings of a truly cinematic experience, and despite some recent big releases, it's been a while since we've had one of those.

To celebrate the trailer and poster launch for, Disney will hold a stunning light show of massive proportions featuring highlights from the film projected tonight over Niagara Falls.

With Avatar: The Way of Water, the franchise reaches new heights as Cameron transports audiences back to the magnificent world of Pandora in a spectacular and stirring action-packed adventure.

Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, the sequel begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive,  and the tragedies they endure.

Directed by James Cameron and produced by Cameron and Jon Landau, the Lightstorm Entertainment Production stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, and Kate Winslet. The screenplay was penned James Cameron, Rick Jaffa, and Amanda Silver based on a story by Cameron, Jaffa, Silver, Josh Friedman, and Shane Salerno.

Avatar: The Way of Water splashes down in theaters worldwide on December 16.

This looks so stupid. I hope I'm wrong.

@NakedAvenger - You'd be telling a lie if you pretend you're not even a little amazed at how good that looks, at least from a technical stand point.

A lot of this looks well-shot. I like iMax but not a huge fan of 3d. Think I'll go see this the way it was intended to be viewed. Hopefully, it's better than the first one. I wasn't a huge fan of that

@MyCoolYoung - I was meant to be viewed in IMAX 3d. I think it's been the only movie so far (i've seen) that used it to great results.

@UniqNo - I honestly remember being unimpressed lol I didn’t get it back then. I remember seeing 3d as a kid on field trips where everything was popping out and felt like it was coming towards you, but I never saw it with avatar

... it's pretty. That's about it. Trailer doesn't really sell me on a story.

@EgoEgor - I mean the first one story wasn't all that

At times it looks like a Pixar toon. More pretty stuff inspired by pretty stuff. But nothing makes me want to watch it. If I had access to it now, I might skip through it later. The original was a nice watch at the time but I'm never compelled to rewatch it. It never made me care about the characters so I don't care about reliving that movie or watching the character's next adventures.

But this will be nice eye candy and many will want to see the spectacle. Will automatically break a billion despite being a cliche repeat.

Cameron is great at manipulating the audience with eye candy. T2 was an inferior but flashier remake of T1. Same plotline, right down to a chase to a bridge, a crash, chased by a big rig, another crash that leads to a building that held the means to destroy the villain.

So he can make this a total rip of the original and make people think it was better.

@PartyKiller - Hhmmm ... debatable.

@PartyKiller - James Cameron was a big rig truck driver prior to joining Roger Corman's team as a model maker, that's why we got those big rig truck scenes.

It’s basically the first movie but with water creatures lol

Looks very pretty but we’ve seen all that besides the water based stuff

Yo, why all the hate for this movie?

@Jacory - idk, its become a bit of group think mentality online in recent years to despise everything about Avatar.
