Avatar: The Way of Water will splash down into theaters this December, but before we get to experience James Cameron's long-awaited sequel, Avatar returns to the big screen later this month.

As you should already know, the Academy Award-winning 2009 epic adventure is the most successful movie of all time, and returns to theaters on September 23 in stunning 4K High Dynamic Range. Now, 20th Century Studios has released a new TV spot and posters to build hype for what we're sure will be another record-breaking weekend for the 13-year-old blockbuster.

While the movie was responsible for ushering in an era of terrible 3D conversions as studios looked to cash in on the craze, Avatar made superb use of the format and, unless you have an old 3D TV lying about somewhere, this will be the only way to experience it in that way (there are other enhancements too, including HFR scenes).

A few days ago, we attended the global press conference for this Avatar re-release and got to ask Stephen Lang about how his villain, Colonel Quaritch, has left a lasting impact on moviegoers. Stay tuned, because we'll be bringing you that interview (along with other highlights from the event) very soon.

Written and directed by Cameron, Avatar stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Stephen Lang, Michelle Rodriguez, and Sigourney Weaver.

The film was produced by James Cameron and Jon Landau, and ended up being nominated for nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. Ultimately, Avatar won three Oscars for Best Cinematography, Production Design, and Visual Effects.

Check out those posters and a new TV spot for the Avatar re-release below:

@bobevanz - Yeah, they've been reporting news DAYS later now for months.

It's an absolute shame, considering this site was my go-to for every single piece of film news, be it CBM or not.

I wonder if the new element at this center of this story is called needtodrinkium. It looks pretty I’ll give it that. But i’ve only seen the original once in the theaters when it first came out. It never interested me enough to return to it.

Would be helpful to know if this is the extended cut or theatrical cut?

How can a film that sold that amount of tickets have had no influence on pop culture?

This sequel is something I would’ve liked to see 10 years ago.

@slickrickdesigns - just imagine how salty it will be if ot bombs, he'll be batching about Disney despite them stating the marketing in fricking september. Difference is it was first film that attempted to use 3D differently which is why people went to see it.

I generally can't muster interest for this. For those so excited, I hope it pans out for you. First one wasn't anything special to me.
