BOX OFFICE: Amid Negative Reviews THE DARK TOWER Shoots To $1.8 Million During Thursday Screenings

The Dark Tower has not been faring well with critics so it probably won't surprise you to learn that the big screen adaptation of Stephen King's epic series of novels is now underperforming commercially.

The Dark Tower was supposed to launch a series of films alongside a TV show and while the latter is reportedly still happening, the franchise's future is definitely in doubt if its performance at the domestic box office is any indication. The Stephen King adaptation earned $1.8 million during Thursday night screenings (which started at 7.19pm, something fans of the books will surely appreciate).

Sony and MRC are expecting The Dark Tower to debut with $19 million while some analysts believe it could earn around $20 million to $25 million. Others, however, believe that it will only reach the high teens due to those negative reviews so just how well the movie is going to do this weekend is unclear.

With a budget of $60 million, The Dark Tower is going to have to work hard overseas to make its budget back and even then it's still a long way off profitability. King has already said he'd like to see the sequel go down the R-Rated route, so who knows, there could be a chance that the franchise is saved!

We'll just have to wait and see. Are you guys looking forward to seeing The Dark Tower this weekend?

@DUCKBOY - ya I figured it had a much bigger budget. It will definitely make its money back, possibly even with domestic sales alone. That's a bit of a stretch I know but I think this movie is going to do well overseas

I've been looking forward to this, as I have read that it's a great series, and have loved other Stephen King books like 11/22/63.
They should have just adapted the books, which is what a lot of people wanted to see, and maybe gone the TV series route, although that is still happening apparently.

@SimplyAz - Let's hope that "It" can be the savior of this problem.

@TheLight -

It looks scary but interesting, although I don't watch horror movies, so not the best judge.

Only a $60MM budget? That's seriously low for a tentpole action/fantasy flick.

@Dotanuki - That is low......this movie will be a success if it hits 210 million.

This movie had flop written all over it, but with such a low budget maybe not.
$60 million is tiny
