BOX OFFICE: ELYSIUM Likely To Open With $35 Million In A Crowded Weekend Of New Releases

In a summer crammed full of big releases, the North American box office is gearing up for yet another unpredictable weekend. With Elysium, Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, We're the Millers and Planes all opening between tomorrow and Friday, it's hard to predict which will emerge victorious, although it's the Neil Blomkamp helmed sci-fi movie which looks set to reach #1 with an impressive debut of $35 - 40 million. However, contradicting that estimation are some analysts who believe it will struggle to reach $30 million. There's currently no word on what the budget was. We're The Millers could ultimately prevail despite a mauling from critics, while Planes has a projected three-day opening in the $25 million range. Will Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters be the latest 2013 flop? Possibly, as the sequel will likely open with a paltry $20 million. A good $11+ million less than 2010's Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief.

In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a hard line government official will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn't stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.

I'm always surprise how many times the release date is badly chosen. ( R.I.P Pacific Rim).

I mean summer is a big 3 month opportunity and they cannot manage to target one week where there no competitor...

Anyway, I'm afraid Elysium will not be a huge success, but will cetainly do very well, fingers crossed. Love Neil Blomkamp.

And Percy Jackson is a lame franchise. Hate the first one.

Elysium wasn't on my "must see" list for 2013, but by now I'm pretty sure I'm going to see it on the big screen. Hope it's good and does well! :)

Yeah, cause a space movie about health care staring MATT DAMON! is totally going to pack the theaters.

I'm calling $22-25M maximum.

But I hope it does much, much worse.

Adults with kids: Planes
Young adults and teens: Percy
Adults: The Millers (women like Jennifer Aniston, men like watching her in underwear)
Matt Damon: Wondering why he lost the Bourne gig and why his last three films bombed.
Sony execs: seeing themselves in that opening seen from The Wolverine...

Also: Matt Damon needs to keep his politics to himself and just shut up and act.

IMO Elysium has no competition at all..... 50-60 millions would be more accurate

..the other movies look like crap..

He walked before he rolled...been there done that. If he wanted to walk again, don't you think he'd spend some time trying to figure that out?

spend some time... heh heh heh.

Actually yes he did...he did in financing the anti-fracking film he produced, and he did in his advocacy of public schools...of course, that was before he enrolled his in a private school. But that just one of many reasons this film could bomb this weekend.

@maranta & @ MarkV, agree with both of you. And this film is another with a left-wing political message. I hope it bombs too, but it will probably do decently well because of the look and action ( I think Planes & The Millers will beat it out though.) It will NOT be the number one sci-fi movie for this year, I'm pretty sure Star Trek sewed that up. (Unless you consider MoS to be sci-fi.) And no, it's not the best either. General audiences are for the most part pretty smart. If they don't like a movie that some of you think is awesome, that probably means that they have better taste than you.

....wow, while others are making fun of Damon and this craptastic movie you personally attack the commentators? your a class act! Is Damon related to you? if not you need to chill.

Did the first Percy Jackson do well enough to warrant a sequel?

I hope both Elysium and Percy Jackson do well.

I like Neil Blomkamp, Damon, and Copley. But I also enjoyed the first Percy Jackson movie (surprisingly) and you can't argue with Alexandra Daddario (#2 pick for Wonder Woman behind Gemma Arterton).

Hahah!! I will giggling like a dairy queen when this stinker tanks.

Take the classic White Savior plotline, throw in progressive issues like healthcare and immigration, and the cherry on top of this shit sandwhich is MATT DAMON!

Proof that hollywood still has a cocaine problem.
marantaz
marantaz - 8/6/2013, 4:16 PM
Fett, I didn't say he can't do what he wants with his money or make movies with the message he supports, just pointed out to you that he does use them as propaganda for his politics. And people who don't like it are free to avoid them and anything else he does. Nor did I say I won't see it...
I think its pretty obvious to Hollywood execs that outspoken celebs mean bad box office...as it should be, no matter what their position, people don't support with their money those that disagree with them with such anger and disrespect as these celebs do. I expect, o, Jamie Foxx will have a negative impact on ASM2 because of the things he's said.
And there you go again stereotyping. I'm agnostic, I've never believed in gods (well, except Thor), I'm conservative to the extreme (Gitmo is too soft on terrorist), I hate both political parties, and Kirk Cameron is a doosh just like Damon and Michael Moore.
But Damons politics don't doom this flick, the competition is too stiff. If he Ts great, it will do ok, if not, it's another summer bunkerbuster bomb.

Please explain how this movie is political propaganda?

1% of the population lives with access to resources and property that the rest of could never even imagine getting, short of winning the lottery. Like it or not, this is the world we all live in!

Like other sci-fi stories throughout history, the writers have extrapolated on a trend they see in their society, and are following it to its most logical conclusion...what happens if the environment goes downhill, and the economy with it? You can bet your last dollar that the wealthiest/most powerful will lock down the best land and resources they can get...toot sweet! In case you haven't noticed, it's already happening...

Tevii - 8/6/2013, 9:21 PM
This has been the year of the flop even for movies with big name actors... After Earth, Bullet to the Head, Last Man Standing, The Lone Ranger Pacific Rim, etc. Star Trek and wolverine didn't pull in the numbers they were hoping.
I wouldn't be surprised if this movie failed too. It's not a good year for movies

@fettastic

Don't studios keep a larger percentage of the Opening Weekend? I thought that was how they balanced it out. They get a huge chunk of opening weekend then the percentage thins down over time.

I could be wrong but I thought that was how it worked. Not saying Percy will be profitable just curious.

Here's a good article on how the money is split up. I think that 55% is more of an average number. I am guessing when the blockbusters are coming the studio's negotiate a higher percentage because they believe the seats will be filled and the theater will make more money on the $10 popcorn (dull)
