BOX OFFICE: ELYSIUM Likely To Open With $35 Million In A Crowded Weekend Of New Releases
Elysium may open to upwards of $35 million this weekend in North America, but it will have to contend with competition from Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, We're the Millers and Planes. Which will come out on top? Hit the jump for details!
In a summer crammed full of big releases, the North American box office is gearing up for yet another unpredictable weekend. With Elysium, Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, We're the Millers and Planes all opening between tomorrow and Friday, it's hard to predict which will emerge victorious, although it's the Neil Blomkamp helmed sci-fi movie which looks set to reach #1 with an impressive debut of $35 - 40 million. However, contradicting that estimation are some analysts who believe it will struggle to reach $30 million. There's currently no word on what the budget was. We're The Millers could ultimately prevail despite a mauling from critics, while Planes has a projected three-day opening in the $25 million range. Will Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters be the latest 2013 flop? Possibly, as the sequel will likely open with a paltry $20 million. A good $11+ million less than 2010's Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief.
In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a hard line government official will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn't stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.
