BOX OFFICE: M. Night Shyamalan's AFTER EARTH Flops With $9.8 Million Friday Opening

Panned by critics over the past week, it should probably come as no surprise to learn that After Earth opened with only $9.8 million yesterday with a predicted weekend total of a measly $25 million. This makes it 2013's most high-profile flop so far. Read on for details!

This weekend will once again belong to Fast & Furious 6, but M. Night Shyamalan's After Earth looks unlikely to even take the #2 spot after a disappointing Friday opening of $9.8 million. Now You See Me (which has a cast featuring the likes of Mark Ruffalo, Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman) took #2 with $10 million and looks set for a weekend of $27.8M. After Earth on the other hand - which has a 'B' CinemaScore despite being torn to pieces by the majority of critics - looks set for a three day total of only $27.2 million (although some analysts are predicting a number as low as $25 million). It's not exactly clear what has caused the movie to underperform, especially with Will Smith and his son Jaden (who found his own success with The Karate Kid) in the two leading roles, although it's thought that the last few Shyamalan films have just put audiences off going anywhere near anything that has his name attached. With a $130 million budget, only its overseas opening can save it now. According to Deadline, "the studio worked "really hard" to fix this crapfest in post-production and that even an arrogant know-it-all like Shyamalan was aware the pic didn’t work but couldn’t fix it on his own." Are you guys planning on checking it out?

A crash landing leaves teenager Kitai Raige (Jaden Smith) and his legendary father Cypher (Will Smith) stranded on Earth, 1,000 years after cataclysmic events forced humanity’s escape. With Cypher critically injured, Kitai must embark on a perilous journey to signal for help, facing uncharted terrain, evolved animal species that now rule the planet, and an unstoppable alien creature that escaped during the crash. Father and son must learn to work together and trust one another if they want any chance of returning home.

STARRING:

Will Smith as Cypher Raige
Jaden Smith as Kitai Raige
Isabelle Fuhrman as Rayna
Kristofer Hivju as Security Chief
Gabriel Caste as Ranger
Zoë Isabella Kravitz as Senshi Raige
Sophie Okonedo as Faia Raige

And absolutely no one on Earth is surprised except for Shyamalan and Big Willy, who will blame the failure on each other when, in fact, both egomaniacs suck equally.

When I saw Dark Knight Rises the audience was giggling at the After Earth trailer. Not the first time I've seen that happen with a Shyamalan trailer. The guy is box office poison. How many directors have ever become household names by being terrible? One: M. Night Shyamalan.

See I thought a good idea for the twist would be this was actually taking place thousands of years BEFORE modern man and they could incorporate those myths of humanity being started or influenced by aliens when really it's just a cycle of human society's evolution, destruction, and rebirth....

BOOM! Twisted! Haha

I see a lot of comments everywhere this movie is mentioned...people are ripping smith for putting his kid in this, cuz its failure could ruin the kid, and all the family posing at the premiere was laughably appalling. And now that it looks like a sneaky attempt to inject scientology into the save the earth cult thinking, its looking even more repulsive. And the cgi just sucks. This is all on smith, most people don't know or care if shamalamadingdong had anything to do with it.

TEA! You're Alive! Hot damn! But... eeeuuwwww! You're gonna have to make that up!

Wow. Well the movie is bad.
I wouldn't put all the blae on MNS
Will Smith has one of the biggest egos in the industry
They try to make this a tour de force for this guy's son
but the force is not with him
And Will's somber/morose character is tiresome

I think we all knew this would flop. M. Night is just a terrible filmmaker. With movies like brain-dead aliens that were defeated by water. An overly pretentious movie with mermaids and grass wolfs. Plants that make people kill themselves. People stuck in an elevator with the devil, and a mess of a movie based on a good tv show. It's no wonder that this movie was just as equally bad. This movie was full of idiocy and laughable choices. It tried to ham-fist some weird back story that just made the movie more convoluted. The Skrel were apparently a very stupid race making the Ursa without any damn eyes. And Smith being named Cyber Raige! Really?

I really think Shyamalan made a mistake doing solely sci-fi / horror flicks. If he'd branched out into quiet dramas or even dark comedies he might still have a career.

I blame both Shyamalan and Jaden Smith...if Will Smith hadn't been in this movie, audiences wouldn't have given two [frick]s about it and it would have flopped even worse than it did.
