BOX OFFICE: The Future Of The PACIFIC RIM Franchise May Hinge On How Well It Does In China

Pacific Rim seriously underperformed domestically and after another disappointing weekend, it may now fail to even reach $100 million. However, if the Guillermo del Toro helmed movie does well enough in China, that could potentially leave the door open for a sequel.

Pacific Rim is set to be released in China on Wednesday, and it's there that the future of the franchise may now rest. Having grossed only $84 million domestically, it's overseas that the movie has earned most of its takings so far with around $140 million. If it manages to reach $50 million and later performs well in Japan and Brazil, it's possible that Pacific Rim will ultimately earn as much as $300 million worldwide. However, is that enough for a sequel? "That may or may not mean there’d be a sequel, but at least there’d be a discussion," says BoxOffice.com editor-in-chief Phil Contrino. It's unclear just how much Pacific Rim cost to produce, with some sources saying $180 million and others as much as $250 million. Either way, it seems unlikely that a sequel is particularly high on Warner Bros.' list of priorities based on numbers like these.

There are such things as great standalone movies.

Not everything needs to grind out sequels

What NEEDS to perform well is Godzilla, at least with that franchise, Kaiju movies can survive in Hollywood.

I absolutely loved Pacific Rim. It was original, the fight scenes were well framed and exhilarating. Yes the characters and script weren't great but does that really mater in a movie like this. Not to mention all of the small details and the badass score.

does that really matter in a movie like this?*

No chance of a sequel. Cost far too much. Get real.

My wife and I both thought it was a great movie. However, I'm not sure about the need for a sequel. I hate when sequels are done when they are unnecessary.

Since the movie basically took place in Hong Kong, it should do well there, even though the Chinese Jaeger (Spoiler alert) had its head ripped off in like 2 seconds.

Such a shame that one of the most fun and entertaining movies to come out in years does so poorly at the box office.

Pacific Rim is the best movie I've seen so far this year.

I hope it does well in China.

I hope Godzilla makes bank next year or its bye-bye to big budget kaiju movies.

I don't know why it's so hard to understand!

It's going to do 100 million easily in US!

On the sequel; well this film was 75% financed by LEGENDARY!
Who will get the most hit from its box office failure!
But the PACIFIC RIM property is of Warner Bros.

They can treat the sequel of PR as an original film & bet another 200 million on it with much much smarter marketing & slightly improved story!
& with an already builtin audience who in majority really liked the film will come & see & it's DVD/ BLU-Ray performence needs to me monitored as well!

Look at Kick Ass, wasn't a sucess in cinemas but was really liked by people!

I certainly hope WB takes the leap of 200 million & treat the sequel as an Original Sci-Fi film & we'll have a successful franchise!

I seriously want a series of these films; it was an amazing movie going experience & was a spectecale to watch & was a very good film!
Great film cuz I had such an awesome time watching JEAGERS puching KAIJUS with that Awesome theme track!

Del Toro is the best director around. Pacific Rim was the best film of the summer.

Haters gonna hate.

@Batmaniac

Yea it'll get a cult following some years down the line.
Most movies that underperform get new life with DVD/blu ray sales and being shown on TV.

Nah reboot.

Never had to reboot Hellboy.

Hal sucks.

Id really like a Hellboy 3 just to make up for Hellboy 2.
he sequel was way to much comedy. It really did have an action to comedy retio on par with Men In Black.

But if I had to choose Id want Pacific Rim 2 more than Hellboy 3 more than Mountains of Madness more than Justice League Dark.

Movie wasn't all that good... GA didn't like it and the WOM wasn't good either... Reason why movie flop in the US. It will do fine in China as Asian loves monster movie.

This movie had to be seen in IMAX. I saw it on the Isense screen first and then in IMAX a few days later and on IMAX it was an extraordinarily unique experience. Truly epic. I will be gutted if we don't get anymore
