Dark Tower Update: Javier Bardem Close to Signing

Dark Tower Update: Javier Bardem Close to Signing

Deadline is reporting that actor Javier Bardem is just about ready to sign on the dotted line to portray Roland Deschain in the adaptation of Stephen King's Dark Tower novels, which will reportedly cover three films and limited run (about six episodes) TV series to air between each film.

"Director Ron Howard begins production on the first film in September, and he’ll also direct the first TV segment," says Deadline. "Akiva Goldsman has scripted the film and the initial TV component. Imagine Entertainment chief Brian Grazer is producing the films with Goldsman and King. Goldsman will produce the TV part through his Weed Road banner.

"...Bardem's WME reps are putting the finishing touches on the deal, and they are close enough that Howard has begun meeting with other actors to cast the roles around Bardem. It's a complex deal, almost unprecedented, because it calls for Bardem to star in the feature film and the TV component. His deal will also include options for two sequels (the TV program that runs between the second and third films will be a prequel). I'm told it will add up to a career-best payday for Bardem. Howard and Goldsman have told me they see the trilogy as their answer to the Peter Jackson-directed adaptation of JRR Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. While Middle Earth had a mystical medieval feel, The Dark Tower vibe is one that Goldsman described as 'an alternate Americana, one part post-apocalyptic, one part Sergio Leone.'"

Hmmm I liked him in No Country for Old Men, but he just... lost -get it- in The Losers.

@AlSimmons...yeah he got very lost in The Losers, so lost that he WASN'T even in the movie...that was Jeffrey Dean Morgan, the Comedian in Watchmen. As far as Javier for this role....not sure, I always expected Roland to be a bit more gaunt and rugged, not that Javier isn't rugged, but I guess more a Viggo type than Javier.

*extremely vague spoilers... maybe*

They claimed watchmen was "un-film-able". I personally never understood why? I just finished reading these books and about halfway through the series it starts loosing its ability to translate to film.

Does Javier Bardiem have blue eyes? Because Roland Deschain has bright blue eyes. Im sorry but it just seems to me that this is a pretty big plot point in the 2nd novel. Im almost done with the second novel and I LOVE IT.

@TwilightMutant Yes, I'm pretty sure he does. I'm currently on Song of Susannah. I haven't had time to read it yet though. Wolves of the Calla was awesome though. The fourth book was the least of them so far.

I guess you guys have never heard of eye contacts... You see, they put these little colored disks over people's eyes and they can change a person's eye color, or enhance vision. Just one tiny piece of Hollywood magic...

@docdrop- No shit sherlock. In my opinion though, I have never seen colored contacts that look real. Its nothing but a distraction TO ME.

I think all of you are getting confused! Ladybullseye was correcting AlSimmons about Bardem being in the Losers. She corrected him by saying that Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and NOT Javier Bardem, was in The Losers. Then she went on to explain that Jeffrey Dean Morgan played the Comedian in The Watchmen. There. Now I have a headache. By the way, I think Ladybullseye is [frick]ing hot! Ladybullseye, would you marry me?

So...3 movies and 2, 6 episode mini-season tv series?

for a story that took 7 novels, many of which were extremely long, and 4, 7 issue comic book series...it just doesn't seem like there is any way in hell they will be able to go over everything.

a story of this size? i fear for this project. I truly hope its good, but i highly doubt that it will do the novels justice.

Like "TheSteve" said, about halfway into the series, it loses its ability to translate to film.

There is just so much to go over and so much that happens. I guarantee you that people who havent read the novels will walk away from the movies scratching their heads and hating it because it will be impossible to translate the story.

@ thesteve13 - Watchmen WAS unfilmable. Look what happened; Nearly three hours of nothing happening - in slow-motion!!! Trust me, Dark Tower will put Watchmen where it belongs; in the back of the cupboard.

@ TwilightMutant - Did you read the expanded version of The Gunslinger? Much better than the original edition.

Rothwilder

But Ron Howard? Really?? When was the last time he had a film that was good? I think his daughter is more relevant than him now. The Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons were both horrible.

@ Rothwilder - I thought Angels & Demons was good, a vast improvement on The Da Vinci Code.
But Frost/Nixon (2008) was a brilliant film. A lot of tension built up around solid dialogue. I have faith that Ron Howard will make a good film out of The Dark Tower.

@RyNow- Yea I got the revised and expanded version. I think it was the placement of the flashbacks that was a tad confusing at times. Still loved it tho. The 2nd one totally topped the 1st one tho imo. Cant wait 4 the rest!

I have a feeling that if/when they reach the part in the story in which Stephen King himself actually becomes an integral part of the story, and if they actually cast King, people are going to say "This is [frick]ing stupid" just like I said when I was reading the books.

RyKnow- Watchmen was "The Godfather" of comicbook/superhero movies. brilliant
RyKnow
RyKnow - 4/8/2011, 1:38 AM
@ thesteve13 - LOL! The Godfather is way out of Watchmen's league! 40 Years on and it's still an important piece of cinema that is as much talked about today as when it was released.
Where's Watchmen today? 3 years on and the only people who talk about it are fans of the comic.
If any CBM is "The Godfather" of CBM's, it's The Dark Knight, without a shadow of a doubt. But I aren't getting into this debate because we'll never agree. We'll agree to disagree :)
