Tracking Indicates Tom Cruise's EDGE OF TOMORROW Will Flop

Variety gives you an Edge of Tomorrow box office prediction: It's gonna be cold, it's gonna be grey, and it's gonna last for the rest of Tom Cruise's life.

Last year, Tom Cruise was a happy camper. His new sci-fi film Oblivion opened domestically with a $38 million weekend. That's actually one of his better openings, and allow the film to recoup its $120 million budget. Now Tom Cruise is about to throw his hat in the ring once more with Doug Liman's Edge of Tomorrow, and there doesn't seem to be as much interest as Cruise's last venture in the sci-fi genre.
This week, pre-release tracking numbers dropped $5 million from last week, suggesting that “Edge of Tomorrow’s” opening weekend debut would be in the $25 million range, a dismal opening for any studio tentpole. The pricey pic, co-financed by Village Roadshow, cost between $175 and $200 million, meaning that in order to turn a profit, the film will have to make at least double that worldwide. - variety.com

TOM CRUISE'S OPENING WEEKENDS
War of the Worlds - $64 million
Mission: Impossible II - $57 million
Mission: Impossible III - $47 million
Mission: Impossible - $45 million
Oblivion - $38 million
Interview with the Vampire - $36 million
Minority Report - $35 million

The story unfolds in a near future in which a hive-like alien race, called Mimics, have hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, shredding great cities to rubble and leaving millions of human casualties in their wake. No army in the world can match the speed, brutality or seeming prescience of the weaponized Mimic fighters or their telepathic commanders. But now the world’s armies have joined forces for a last stand offensive against the alien horde, with no second chances. Lt. Col. Bill Cage (Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously demoted and then dropped—untrained and ill-equipped—into what amounts to little more than a suicide mission. Cage is killed within minutes, managing to take an Alpha down with him. But, impossibly, he awakens back at the beginning of the same hellish day, and is forced to fight and die again…and again. Direct physical contact with the alien has thrown him into a time loop—dooming him to live out the same brutal combat over and over. But with each pass, Cage becomes tougher, smarter, and able to engage the Mimics with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Blunt), who has lain waste to more Mimics than anyone on Earth. As Cage and Rita take the fight to the aliens, each repeated battle becomes an opportunity to find the key to annihilating the alien invaders and saving the Earth.

EDGE OF TOMORROW is being directed by Doug Liman (“The Bourne Identity,” “Mr. & Mrs. Smith”) from a screenplay written by Dante Harper, Christopher McQuarrie and Joby Harold, based on the novel "All You Need Is Kill" by Hiroshi Sakurazaka. The film stars: Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt, Bill Paxton, Jonas Armstrong (BBC’s “Robin Hood”), Tony Way, Kick Gurry, Franz Drameh, and Charlotte Riley. The film will hit theaters June 6, 2014.

I believe in tracking, but Tom Cruise is an international star, so I wonder if this will indeed compensate for low US box office with a healthy International one......

e.g. Oblivion (per boxofficemojo)
Domestic: $89,107,235 31.1%
+ Foreign: $197,061,337 68.9%

Am I the only one confused why mission impossible 4 isn't in the above tracking info.?

I thought that was a huge success . Can someone confirm or deny this?

For a movie with no competition opening weekend outside of an arthouse teen movie, these numbers seem way to low.

Not surprising. It definitely hasn't grasp my interest just like many of his movies lately except Jack Reacher. That was the last Tom flick I've seen at the theater. What was the opening number for that one anyway? I could have sworn that one didn't do too bad...

I have to say with a different lead I'd probably watch this on release day (not with any other lead, of course). Might still watch it.

@thewonderer

Hm, actually it didn't really have a big opening weekend. $12 million weekend opening, pretty much chump change for action films.

I like the design of the future mech suits and etc. It reminds be of how awesome War Machine can still be.

Once it got into wider release, it did ~25M and ~45M in the next two weekends. Hard to get apples-to-apples on Ghost Protocol.

Never mind about Jack Reacher, Box Office Mojo has the lifetime gross at 80 million....so yeah. Tom might need to start rethinking some of these roles he chooses.

Ah the IMAX only opening would explain it. The next weekend it made $29 million so it probably opened to all theaters then.

Yeah, Americans don't like TC (that's what I'm calling him, make peace with it) much anymore but internationally he's still got appeal. This will probably do fine in terms of the overall numbers (but only just). Honestly the movie just doesn't look all that appealing. And for the love of God can someone tell these guys that using a "song" with an agonizingly slow and irritating synthesized voice in trailers for a gritty realistic alien invasion movie isn't the way to go? It was annoying with Battle L.A. too.

I agree that Mission Impossible 4 was pretty boss though. However, I attribute that more to the director than anything else. Tom Cruise was still being Tom Cruise.

@Friday

Ya the trailers have me confused to most of the trailers showcase Emily Blunt training him and she knows everything about the powers and like him seems to remember going back in time. Then at points in the trailer she seems to have no idea what is going on which is confusing as hell. This movie does nothing for me and I can't really get excited for this movie.
