JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM Off To A Thunderous Start In China; Aiming For 2nd-Biggest Opening Of The Year

Following a strong international rollout last week, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is off to a thunderous start in China as well, having racked up well over $34 million on its first day of release.

Multiple sources are reporting that Universal's Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom opened to $34.4 million on Friday and is already well on its way to scoring the second-biggest opening weekend of the year in the Middle Kingdom, behind only Marvel's Avengers: Infinity War ($199.3M).

The film has already doubled the $17.5 million opening day for 2015's Jurassic World, which scored a $99.2 million 5-day start in China. Current projects believe that
Fallen Kingdom will top that haul in its first three days as it kicks off what should be a monstrous summer run. Its predecessor ultimately topped off with $228.7 million from China and all signs are currently pointing toward a similar outcome this time around.

Overall, the J.A. Bayona-directed film has brought in over $202.3 million at the international box office (not including China) and, once the final numbers come in on Monday, the blockbuster could already be well past the $400 million mark worldwide. There's also a decent chance that it tops $500 million before it opens in the United States on June 22, which would be an incredibly impressive accomplishment.

So, what do you guys think? Sound off with your thoughts below!

It’s been four years since theme park and luxury resort Jurassic World was destroyed by dinosaurs out of containment. Isla Nublar now sits abandoned by humans while the surviving dinosaurs fend for themselves in the jungles.

When the island’s dormant volcano begins roaring to life, Owen (Chris Pratt) and Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard) mount a campaign to rescue the remaining dinosaurs from this extinction-level event. Owen is driven to find Blue, his lead raptor who’s still missing in the wild, and Claire has grown a respect for these creatures she now makes her mission. Arriving on the unstable island as lava begins raining down, their expedition uncovers a conspiracy that could return our entire planet to a perilous order not seen since prehistoric times.

With all of the wonder, adventure and thrills synonymous with one of the most popular and successful series in cinema history, this all-new motion-picture event sees the return of favorite characters and dinosaurs—along with new breeds more awe-inspiring and terrifying than ever before. Welcome to Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.

@Larebel24 - nahh. I don’t think so, the trailers didn’t look that good, i can’t imagine it doing that great. I’m less hyped for it than Jurassic world

With Incredibles 2 looking like it can clear $190M this weekend I’ve seen some people on social media saying if it does Fallen Kingdom May debut at no 2 next weekend tracking is really bad in North America and word of mouth is bad in China and it’s dropping like a rock in Europe and most Asian markets.

All the great moments were in the trailers , piecing the movie together while watching it ruined it for me. There were a few great scenes, but as a mega JP/JW fan I was so disappointed. Oh well, I'll see Incredibles 2 again lol

It should do around $125/140 M this weekend in China and around $250M ultimately when it comes to its chinese run. So around AOU's numbers there.

Good news. It’s great to see a non-Disney movie doing this well. Maybe JW can start to bring in some of the disillusioned SW fans and give them a franchise worth investing in again.

Gotta give Universal props for giving this movie "only" a 170 million budget. After the insane success of the first Jurassic World, most other studios (if not every other studio) would have gone crazy and give the sequel a 250 million budget.

Universal understood part of the appeal of the first was nostalgia and they couldn't bank on that again, so they kept a relatively tight budget for what's set to breeze past 1 billion WW.
