Godzilla took place in the present day and Kong: Skull Island was set in the 1970s but when exactly will the two iconic monsters clash? Well, as many of you probably will have guessed, it too is all going down in the here and now! That gives King Kong time to catch up to his opponent in terms of size and it means that we will indeed get some crossover with the Godzilla sequel which is currently in the works.

Unfortunately, characters from Kong: Skull Island won't be back unless they're portrayed by older actors but Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard had this to say about plans for the crossover.

"No, ours is more in continuity with the sequel to Godzilla right now. They’re doing Godzilla 2 with Mike Dougherty directing, so our film is in [the] present day. We have a couple characters from Godzilla 2 in ours, but it’ll be interesting to see how Kong has fared over the years. You see him in that film and he’s just constantly under attack. Things are going wrong and there’s probably been lots of human intervention since then. It’ll be interesting to see a more rugged, a bit more aged Kong."

It's a shame that this movie means we're going to miss out on four decades or so of Kong's history but it is possible that future films will delve into that which are set in different time periods. We'll have to wait and see but the groundwork is clearly being laid for this movie via Godzilla 2 and it will be interesting seeing if that references Kong and what he's been up to. Who are you guys rooting for?

I'm glad they seem to be keeping it closer to godzilla instead of skull island. I'd much prefer Godzilla's tone.

The one problem I have with these movies is that the human characters are either bland and boring (Godzilla) or a bunch of cliches and has beens (Kong). The only exceptions being Bryan Cranston (but he dies early on), Ken Watanabe (He's not in much of it) and John C. Reilly (I actually felt for that guy). But it's not really suppose to be about them it's suppose to be about the monsters. Godzilla was awesome but for some reason they went with the Jaws effect of keeping him hidden despite seeing him in full view at the airport and we don't see much of him. We do see a fair amount of Kong which along with John C. Reilly is probably why I might like Kong a little more that Godzilla but I'm not so sure about that. All I know is that better do good with Godzilla 2 & Godzilla vs. Kong.

@tb86 - Except movies like Godzilla have always been about the people and their reactions to the monsters, as well as the consequences of the existence of them, which change depending on the era the movies are made. Hell, even in the only Godzilla movie that was made to be a giant monster mash, Final Wars, Godzilla had 15 minutes of screen time. They're not action spectacles and were never intended to be.

Gigan. Please. They should team up to fight him at the end. And have Gamera show up at the end to help. Ooh, and Ultraman.
