In Godzilla vs. Kong, the titular Titans squared off in an epic clash which wrapped up with them seemingly becoming allies.

While that movie was packed with a lot of memorable moments for Kaiju fans, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire promises to take the MonsterVerse down its most bonkers route yet. The sequel will shift the action into Hollow Earth and is set to introduce a deadly new threat in Kong-like Titan, Skar King.

Talking to Total Film (via SFFGazette.com), director Adam Wingard was asked about the franchise's monstrous big bad and teased, "What’s interesting about this new film is that we go in a direction that I don’t think this series has ever seen before, which is that the Skar King is, in a way, the closest that the human threat has ever been juxtaposed onto a titan itself."

"The Skar King almost represents an upscaled version of the worst parts of humanity, just as Kong represents some of the best parts of humanity," the filmmaker added. "I would say the Skar King is the greatest threat that we’ve seen in these movies. It’s really going to take a full team together to bring it down because it’s too big for just one titan!"

We're intrigued to see what this villain brings to the table, but he'll have a tough challenge taking down Godzilla and Kong. The latter even seems to be sporting a robotic arm - recently described on an action figure as a B.E.A.S.T. Glove - and Wingard chose his words carefully when asked about that apparent upgrade.

"It's kind of hard to say too much more than that without spoiling anything, because he has one of my favourite intros of any character I've ever shot in my films," he reveals. "What I will say is I'd want to play with that [action figure] if I was a kid!"

"And though Apex isn't in this story in a literal way, we kind of hint that Monarch absorbed a lot of the Apex technology after the last film. The glove Kong is wearing, it's somewhat insinuated that's Apex technology."

You'll recall that Mechagodzilla was created by Apex and we'd bet on Monarch having got its hands on some of their tech following the rampage that robotic beast ended up going on.

Monsters fighting in hollow earth not as interesting as them fighting in a huge city.

@Matchesz - BULLSEYE! Take that now infamous "running like Avengers" scene where they are seemingly in a gigantic cave. There is no perspective. They no longer appear to be giant monsters. They are just action-figures at that point. 🫤

@Matchesz - I'm banking on the assumption you haven't even seen any battles in the hollow earth, let alone any battles topside. We will see, April

It's Kong vs Evil Kong (Skar King) and Godzilla vs Evil Godzilla (Shimo). That's all he had to say to explain the storyline for this $200+ million dollar toy commercial. 🙄

Minus One has killed any interest I had in this. I get they're going for something different but the Godzilla in this series has been a letdown since the beginning. They got Kong right so far but they could easily screw him up here.

These films are like the Predator franchise, Halloween, Saw, Friday the 13th, ect: no matter how bad the next sequel is gonna be, I will still watch it. I am hoping for it to actually be good tho.

My theory is Skar King completely destroys Kong in their first fight. The mech made by Monarch/Apex has two functions — reinforces his injury (brace), and it also serves in a weaponized purpose.

Not sure how this “looks silly” to some. I remember when the first MonsterVerse movie came out, the complaint was that Godzilla wasn’t shown in the movie enough and that it was a slow burn kind of flick. Years later, Godzilla and Kong are in the movie full-blown and now people say they liked the first installment’s approach. Just another case of d@mned if you do, d@mned if you don’t with online fanboys.

@ImBatman4realz - nobody is happy these days, unless they're complaining and cutting something down (we haven't even seen the movie yet yet, still 50% of the people here already have a judgment. Keep it up and you'll destroy everything this website covers. Talk about self-destruction
