Nathan Fillion Reckons A SERENITY Follow Up Is An "Impossibility"; BUT...

Hitfix asked Fillion whether getting the crew back together was a possibility while chatting to him about Monster's University, and while the fan-favorite actor didn't seem very optimistic, he also adds that we should never underestimate Joss Whedon!

I think Joss Whedon's Firefly (and its spin-off movie Serenity) would probably be the number one fan-pick if they were told any cancelled franchise could rise from the ashes again. When Whedon became arguably the biggest director out there after the massive success of Marvel's The Avengers, a little spark of hope was ignited -- but unfortunately since then there's been no word, and Whedon himself hasn't given any indication that it's part of his plans. Hitfix put the question to Mal Reynolds himself Nathan Fillion, and here's what he had to say:

"That was a project that lived for so short a time, and such a long time ago, I would look at that as an impossibility. Joss Whedon made a movie of it -- something I also considered an impossibility. So I look at that and think 'where is the hope?' but knowing Joss Whedon...I try not to underestimate that man."

Hmmmm. I guess you never know what could happen down the line, but I wouldn't hold my breath!

So an impossibility to him is a possibility for others?

As the years go by, the possibility diminishes further. The stories Whedon had planned were meant to capture these characters during a specific period of their lives. It would be tough to swallow the idea that we'd pick up on them 10+ years later and they'd be in exactly the same situation.

Yeah, STAR TREK did it, transitioning from TV to movies, but they had 3 years of small screen adventures for us call back to.

Perhaps the last best hope is for some limited run animated show featuring the entire voice cast, picking up right where SERENITY left off.

Don't hold your breath, folks.

So sick of hearing about that damned show. They had a special on a week or so ago about it. A roundtable with the writers and actors and they discussed a scene they wanted to film where the hooker character would get raped by The Reavers(?) and they would all die due to an injection she gave herself. Then Fillion would find her surrounded by all the dead Reavers and take her hand "like a lady." They actually had to stop the discussion so they could all sit there and take it in or some nonsense. It was incredibly embarrassing to watch these actors/writers so drunk off of their own self-importance.

Unfortunately I can't imagine the series coming back with everyone older now. I would love it, but it wouldn't feel the same after so long.

Arrested Development, Dollhouse, Firefly, and Fringe all were really good shows that got cancelled and it makes you wonder who is the guy calling the shots at FOX.

For someone sick of hearing about it I find it interesting you watched the special. I watched it too. Didn't get what you did. I got a bunch of people who were shocked at what happened after a show got cancelled and reminiscing. And people who have met Fillion and Tudyk know theyre geniuine and good to the fans.

That being said I would say slim and none to coming back. And slim left town a while back.

I love Firefly, and I love Serenity. But it's over, and that is that. Let it be preserved in it's splendour.

But every single time an actor appeared on the show is asked about the possibility of a continuation (even a decade after the fact), any glib vaguery is almost immediately construed as there being 'hope', and rabid fanboys take only that away.

Just please, move on. Nothing can spoil this show and that movie more than trying to return to it. It's had it's moment in the sun and it was beautiful, but it's time to move on.

Cryptic with the paradoxes as always. Well one can be basically pessimistic and deny that the show is past its possibility, or one can hold blind optimism and devote time from their days seeing if there's the slightest change in percentage that the shows more likely to be on ever again. However, I think I'll just live life open to possibility, whether the show says it'll return in the future, or if it hammers down the last nail in that coffin, those episodes can't be taken away or diminished. But even to keep the blind optimism that it will return, it can surely be said that stranger things have happened
