Wow, what can I say about this film? This film was awesome! You have just got to go see this film in Imax 3D and even if you don't it will still be awesome!

Now as for the effects they were also AWESOME!!! When I was watching the movie it felt like I was IN the movie! So yeah the effects were good!

Now as for the story, it was predictable. Jake is a paralyzed marine who joins the Avatar program and he is put in a Navi body. He soon goes out into the world of Pandora and falls in love with a Navi. Then he must decide to fight with the Navi or the humans. I will leave it at that so you can see the rest for yourself. But overall the story was okay to me.

Now as for the actors, my boy Sam Worthington was damn near perfect in this movie! Zoe Saldana and Sigourney Weaver were good also but the performance that I liked the most was done by Stephan Lang. So, yeah good cast all around!

Now this film is not my favorite film of the year(District 9) but it was good.

3 out of 4 stars

Superdog-
From previous conversations we had, I think you'll have mixed feelings about it(I'm well aware that we haven't agreed on everything, but do have similar ideological sway). As I've already said, the story's a bit truncated and predictable, but the imagery was spectacular. Much of the surroundings of Pandora are translucent, especially at night. Perhaps this evening, I'll write a thorough review for the kiddies to get a more balance perspective.

Phineas@ just make sure you let peterparker read it, I look forward to his comments. I try not to let my ideology influence movies, I can enjoy them for what they are. Hollywood is liberal and you have to accept that when watchig movies. If I didn't I'd never gontothe movies :). But I'm gonna see it in IMAX 3d and it sounds like that alone will be worth the money.

The most advanced 3-D AND CGI I have ever seen. Does change the game for future movies.
Okay, so I have acknowledged that now. Onto the rest.
Not just some bad dialogue, no, just the worst one can imagine. I am not kidding. Think like, ummmmm..... Batman and Robin bad.
The acting, this is as falt of acting as you can get except for the main girl (but it does not matter and I will explain why).
The story and characters are among the most generic and boring, predictable, suspenseless, embarassingly bad-awful stuff I can imagine. Honestly, at least Ang Lee's failure of a Hulk tried. Cameron did not at all. So when we get to a moment that may have some good acting, we are embarrassed instead of moved because we no longer believe in any of it.
What's worse is that these incredible(and I mean incredible!) effects are used for no purpose.
Therefore by the end of the movie, when all the cards were on the table for the last HUGE battle, I could've cared less. No rather, I was offended. I felt.....stupid.
Also, just know that the most cliche' moments of Tropic Thunder, Lion King, Pocahontas, Dances With Wolves, Braveheart, Terminator, Star Wars, King Kong (I could keep going) are all ripped off here in this movie.
So, go see the first hour to explore the most incredible effects you may ever see, and then run for your life!

Superdog-
If so, you're right! But good luck with not having your nose rubbed in it during the film. Cameron lays it on pretty thick.

"So, go see the first hour to explore the most incredible effects you may ever see, and then run for your life!"

Sir, your relevant aritculation rivals that of Shakespeare! I could not have said it better myself.

This movie dragged on for ages, and the last 1/2 hour was about the only action in this. Save your money, was a waste of time.

Watching this movie was like being on a date with a gorgeous woman who wouldn't stop talking about her damn cat.

Yes it looked good, but it was in 3-D. The preview trailer for Alice in Wonderland (also in 3-D), looked just as good. Hell, "Piranha 3-D" looked good.

So maybe it's not the 3-D that makes it look great, is it the art direction? Sin City or 300 were far more creative and interesting to look at.

When you take the looks out of the picture, what's left? Nothing, absolutely nothing.

What's Navi for "Overrated piece of shit?"

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go pop in Terminator and try to wash the Avatar stink off.

Well shucks Mr. Phinehas, that is a nice thing to say. Glad you agree. I feel like I've entered into bizzaro world with all the praise this film is getting. Friggin crap, even Speilberg compared it to the original Star Wars! SPEILBERG!
What is happening? Has everyone agreed that it's time to depart from concerned storytelling?
Phinehas
Phinehas - 12/19/2009, 6:57 PM
District 9 was more intelligent that AVATAR. Though the South Afrikans were the aggressors, they were a hyperbolic allegory of all humans, although humans had a redemptive quality at the end. Not so in Avatar. In Avatar, he totally abandoned his human body for a Na'vi. There is no redemption. I hate that.
Furthermore, Avatar is far more stylized and glossy, yet lacking any real substance. District 9 felt real world...more spirit.

Lucasberg-
Spielberg hasn't done anything relevant for over a decade. Avatar is dated, material-wise. That's why District 9 is a superior film. There are the new boys in town that can apply their world point of view and make it applicable to today without offending everyone on the entire planet earth. When Spielberg makes claims like that, he shows how out of step he is with our current non-80's world.

thwhtGuardian - 12/19/2009, 10:05 PM
yeah district 9 was far more intellectual, how ever(at least in my pallet) there is plenty of room for less intellectual sci-fi movies like Avatar. Sure the story wasn't ground breaking, but the world was very interesting and fun to explore. In most movies visual effects don't make the movie, but this is the exception to the rule, here the effects tell the story which is kind of a strange experience. All the acting, all the dialogue is sort of second tier, it's all about just watching the world of Avatar unfold, it's a total immersion experience. The story may have lacked punch, and there was no suspense but I can honestly say that I never found myself looking at my watch which is something I can't say about some other movies ::cough:: gi joe::cough::

I'm going to Avatar on Tuesday. It has a lot to live up to against D9. The effects alone will not be what it is judged against. I have no doubt that I will enjoy it quite a bit but nothing I have seen has convinved me that in the grand scheme of things, it will be as original or have the impact of D9.

juggy: It doesn't have the originality or impact as District 9, you're on point with that.

You guys can suck my balls. Avatar rocked the house. You guys are dull, and unimaginative. Overcritical Nerds who like only what they wish to see, not the true art of the movie.

@Phinny-pooh : you are right... there is no redemption in that scenario. Even in D9 which is an INCREDIBLE Movie, there is still no redemption. Not really , if you think about how He wound up living and how little he was respected and how much the Alien /Prawn would still suffer in their new environment... and how the leads own friends were made to suffer for even knowing him... oh an how easy it would be for humanity to perpetrate such a fiasco again.... and yet , you are right. There was sooo much hope and redemption in that movie. But that is a sign of a truly Brilliant Director. I see your point, truly I do . My point is that Avatar did not play on such expectations of redemption and simply showed the truth of our shared history and these real scenarios that have created the world we live in today. Camerons message seamed to be more about learning to live with what you have and do not sacrifice your humanity in order to increase your own immediate comfort ability. The idea of one man and his followers destroying many for personal gain is the definition of Evil by the standards of almost all comic books. This movie preached and succeeded at re-igniting the logic of peace through action. Lets revolt, its time for a new type of human being.

Avatar was cool, the story was predictable but the visuals were amazing and it was well acted.

Personally I'd rate District 9 and Star Trek higher but I thoroughly enjoyed the movie in 2D. All I can say is the next time I see the Hulk he better be convincing, have more screen time and spend more time in daylight

I liked Avatar. I thought the imagination and creativity of this world were outstanding. The plot was an all too familiar look in the mirror at how destructive and greedy the human race is. Yet there may be hope for a few. Loved the color, graphics, animation, and environmental lessons.

Fartman, just deal with the fact that not everyone likes the same movies, Jesus Christ im so sick of people freaking out at anyone being negative about a movie they like. Keven said that anyone that didn't think Avatar was amazing was a douchebag! lmao

"Camerons message seamed to be more about learning to live with what you have and do not sacrifice your humanity in order to increase your own immediate comfort ability."
Yet to the contrary, that is precisely what Sully did in the end. He sacrificed his humanity to be a Na'vi.

But wouldn't you do the same phin? You're a crippled vet, and these people have a solution to your injury that doesn't cost a bazillion dollars.

Wow, I didn't know bazillion was a real word, I really expected that to be a typo.
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 12/20/2009, 5:31 PM
Yeah I don't think he sacrificed anything except his human body, the shell. Everything he was moved to the Avatar.
Phinehas
Phinehas - 12/20/2009, 6:49 PM
Yes. He sacrificed what he is to be absorbed into a culture and body not his own. Walking isn't everything. No, twG. I wouldn't do it for my legs.
I'll be honest with you. I find this movie perverse. Judging by your justifications, I see that you two do not.
thwhtGuardian
thwhtGuardian - 12/20/2009, 7:35 PM
Perverse is a pretty strong word, I've read your comments about disliking the anti corporate American sentiments of the movie, but what about it specifically makes it perverse?
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 12/20/2009, 9:14 PM
Well, we already know that you find a great many things "perverse" that I do not, we can just add this to the list! But seriously, Im not getting where your coming from with this at all. Whats perverse about integrating yourself into another race? Culture?
thwhtGuardian
thwhtGuardian - 12/20/2009, 9:22 PM
That was my thought too, personally I don't find integration perverse, nor do I think you lose anything in doing it. It's almost silly trying to think about the philosophical implications of such a shallow movie, but I don't think Jake lost any thing by switching bodies, as it was pointed out to him on numerous occasions he will never truly be one of the "people". Even though he's all blue, he will forever see Pandora as a human would see it, he may learn it's ways and cultural idioms but he'll always be human.

That said, I'd really like to see Phin's perspective on why he thinks it's perverse.

Whether I agree with you or not, I always find looking at things from your point of view interesting Phin.
