The first part of Zack Snyder's Star Wars-inspired sci-fi adventure, Rebel Moon, is now streaming on Netflix, and we're breaking down the movie's action-packed (and somewhat disjointed) conclusion, a major (though not totally unexpected) twist, and cliffhanger ending.

If you haven't watched A Child of Fire yet, major spoilers follow.

When Kora (Sofia Boutella) and fellow farmer Gunnar (Michiel Huisman) set off to find the legendary General Titus (Djimon Hounsou) to enlist his gladiators to their cause, their first stop is a cantina (think Mos Eiseley but with even more scum and villainy), where they meet a pilot/mercenary named Kai (Charlie Hunnam).

Our Han Solo surrogate offers his services, and suggests recruiting a few more warriors along the way. When Kora has her "Seven Samurai," Kai asks if she'd mind the crew making one more stop before returning to Velt so he can drop off his cargo and put his roguish ways behind him for good.

Unfortunately, Kai is not the space scoundrel with a heart of gold he initially presented himself as, but a full-on ruthless bastard who would sell anyone out if it meant a decent payday.

Kai tips off Admiral Noble (Ed Skrein) and his men, who are waiting to spring an ambush, and it's revealed that all of the individuals Kai enlisted were well-known to the Motherworld. Kai tries to force Gunnar to paralyse Kora, but he manages to kill the Irishman (or whatever doubles for an Irishman in this universe) instead, and the crew escape.

A firefight ensues, and Darrian Bloodaxe (Ray Fisher) nobly sacrifices himself to bring down a Dreadnought gun-ship and give his crewmates a chance. Kora engages in hand-to-hand combat with Noble, and is ultimately able to defeat the villain and send him plunging to his death... or so she believes.

As the surviving heroes arrive on Velt, we see that Noble's android(?) body has been recovered, and Motherworld scientists are somehow able to resurrect him.

So, Kora may think that her fight is over, but the sadistic Admiral will be back to take his revenge in Rebel Moon - Part 2: The Scargiver.

Have you watched Rebel Moon yet? If so, what did you think? Drop us a comment down below.

From Zack Snyder, the filmmaker behind 300, Man of Steel, and Army of the Dead, comes REBEL MOON, an epic science-fantasy event decades in the making. When a peaceful colony on the edge of a galaxy finds itself threatened by the armies of a tyrannical ruling force, Kora (Sofia Boutella), a mysterious stranger living among the villagers, becomes their best hope for survival.

Tasked with finding trained fighters who will unite with her in making an impossible stand against the Mother World, Kora assembles a small band of warriors — outsiders, insurgents, peasants and orphans of war from different worlds who share a common need for redemption and revenge. As the shadow of an entire Realm bears down on the unlikeliest of moons, a battle over the fate of a galaxy is waged, and in the process, a new army of heroes is formed.

The heroes of Rebel Moon are: Kora (Sofia Boutella), an Imperium deserter who leaves the peaceful Veldt to fight back; Kai (Charlie Hunnam), a mercenary pilot whose Tawau-Class freighter will prove invaluable to Kora’s quest; Gunnar (Michiel Huisman), a Veldt farmer who knows little of the galaxy outside of his small, quiet corner of the galaxy; General Titus (Djimon Hounsou), a hardened gladiator who once served the Imperium; Tarak (Staz Nair), a noble indentured servant who shares a bond with a flying creature called a Bennu; Nemesis (Doona Bae), a cyborg sword master whose mechanical hands allow her to wield molten-metal weapons; Darrian Bloodaxe (Ray Fisher), an insurgent who has been harrying the Imperium with guerilla attacks; and Milius (E. Duffy), a refugee who seeks justice for their home — a colony that has already fallen to the Mother World.

Rebel Moon: A Child of Fire hits Netflix on December 21. The sequel, Rebel Moon Part 2: The Scargiver, will debut on April 19, 2024.

This movie is limp.

Snyder fails again.

Seems like there are a lot of similar beats to the original Star Wars. It makes sense why Disney would not be interested in it.

@Forthas - yeah, especially in the first hour it was easy to pick up on those beats. And that's not even to speak about the plasma rifles and swords

I dont understand moview reviews now. For example, the taylor swift and beyonce concerts had 90+ on rt. But critics are reviewing films based on a checklist like screenplay, story, cinematography, acting, etc.

This is rotten but at least it had the effort of going through all those aspects unlike the concert films.

Will watch tonight

@vectorsigma -

You're salty a concert film got well reviewed? Are you deranged?

It's apples and oranges🤡😂

My god!

You are truly pathetic 👮

Those that have seen this, is it worth the time? I dropped my Netflix so don't want it back unless something really good is coming.

@lazlodaytona - yes. A movie that looks good but sucks is a bummer because you really want to watch it and like it. Visually good but can't sit through the 1st half

@lazlodaytona - it's not worth renewing your subscription for. It's a cool movie with the usual Snyder pitfalls, so you're not really missing anything

lazlodaytona - 12/22/2023, 8:52 PM
@bkmeijer1 - ok. I'll just renew my subscription when Kobra Kai premieres.

@lazlodaytona - just looked it up, and there isn't even a release date yet. And also discovered the only other two shows I plan to watch before Rebel Moon Part 2 premieres are Brothers Sun and Avatar.

Think I might actually also cancel my subscription for three months or so. Thanks for the idea

WOW — I thought the directors cut was what netflix was releasing today, and only the theatrical was edited…. But theyre actually making subscribers wait til tba 2024 for the directors cut, just to milk / double dip.

What a horrible decision and overt marketing move.

@ReverseFlasher - I recall that being made quite clear how they would be releasing it. Releasing both versions at the same time would make no sense.

@MosquitoFarmer - letting people pick what movie they want to watch "would make no sense.". how
ReverseFlasher
ReverseFlasher - 12/22/2023, 7:56 AM
@MosquitoFarmer - Clearly I missed that, and didn't pay that close attention to the whole thing. And yeah pg-13 could get more people to watch in theater, while releasing the directors cut online could get more subs… so they'd win on both fronts? Idk lol

I mean if they really werent trying to make box office, whats the point of holiday theatrical release at all (esp now that we see the recviews)? Did they think it was necessary to secure a vfx nod, bc thats all they're gonna get at best lol. Plus the theatrical reviews and word of mouth are definitely hurting its success right now, whereas the DC might not have.

@ReverseFlasher - Holiday season has always been a box office draw. And it's not like they planned on it getting poor reviews; they imagined a hit on their hands.
ReverseFlasher
ReverseFlasher - 12/22/2023, 8:13 AM
@MosquitoFarmer - well thats kinda the point, they didnt do any testing of a pg-13 cut, and no one at NF was like hey maybe this shitty pg13 version we just watched will hurt the word of mouth and overall reception of the film?
ReverseFlasher
ReverseFlasher - 12/22/2023, 8:15 AM
@MosquitoFarmer - which btw is a viewpoint that multiple reviews have echoed

@imnotadoor - Them releasing the movie they want you to see makes more sense to me than you getting something they didn't want you to see yet.

Well this fricking movie. I put Netflix on and wanted to watch 7 deadly sins and get over with it, but this trash starts to play automatic. No menu screen, no nothing and I was just like wtf? Guess I'll watch it later.

I’m neither a fan or hater of Zack but like most of his last handful of films, this movie has a lot of visual flair but is incoherent. Stuff just happens and it feels like making something look cool takes precedence over story. I think he lacks focus. He needs a writer and a team that keeps him on track and keeps him focused on creating a movie that both looks cool and has a solid story and focus. There’s no wonder this movie was passed on when it was pitched as a Star Wars movie.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 12/22/2023, 5:58 PM
@bcom - exactly. I think Snyder knows how to come up an interesting world and how to portray that visually, but he really doesn't know how to write in the world.
