In a humourous chat with MTV News' Josh Horrowitz, Star Trek Into Darkness screenwriter Damon Lindelof has addressed a lot of the complaints that some fans have shared since the movie was finally released in the US last week. As well as addressing any apparent plot holes and the many twists - including the fact that "John Harrison" was indeed Khan - Lindelof even teases the future of the franchise. More spoilers can be found by clicking on the link at the bottom of the page!

Why Did They Decide To Make John Harrison's True Identity, Khan?

"As for our friend Mr. Harrison (I am still uncomfortable even typing his true identity, so conditioned I have become to not do so), yes — there was a fair amount of back and forth as to whether to take on such an iconic character. But it was never really a "Should we or shouldn't we?" as much as it was "We really have to do this but if we don't get it right people are going to kill us." I think that character is so iconic — he has such an intense gravity in the Trek universe, we likely would have expended more energy NOT putting him in this movie than the other way around.

Were They Ever Concerned About The Similarities Between This Movie And Wrath of Khan?

"We were ever wary of the line between "reimagined homage" and "direct ripoff" and erred on the side of the former. As a fun FYI, Bob, Alex and I code-named the script file "PLANT STUDY" as we sent it back and forth. We never considered leaving Kirk dead at the end of this movie. No one would've believed we'd leave him that way and in this spoiler-centric culture, the inter webs would have known we were bringing him back and how long before the release of STAR TREK KIRK IS BACK WE PROMISE."

Why Did Admiral Marcus Load The Genetically Enhanced Soldiers Into The Torpedos?

"He didn't load the torpedoes. Harrison did. This is made clear in the movie when he growls, "There are men and women in all those torpedoes. I put them there." He removed the fuel compartments and replaced them with the cryotubes in attempt to smuggle his crew out of the underground bunker where he was forced to develop them. When his plan was discovered, all he could do was escape, leaving Admiral Marcus with his 72 Trojan Horses. When Kirk suggests going after Harrison on an unofficial vendetta mission, Marcus thinks for a moment (you can actually SEE this happen in the movie) and then realizes he can kill two birds with one stone by having Kirk fire the torpedoes at the Klingons, getting rid of the evidence and starting a war in the process."

Did They Really Consider Star Trek: Vengeance As The Title:

"we considered Star Trek Vengeance as a title. But a wise man once said, "Ghost Rider Did It." And that wise man was J.J.. We debated multiple titles... there are seriously email chains between J.J., Alex, Bob, Bryan and myself that offer up no less than HUNDREDS of ideas. Many of them did not include the words "Star Trek." My personal favorite was "Space Fun!" (yes, the exclamation point was included)"

Was It Really Necessary To Bring Back Leonard Nimoy As Spock?

"We continue to feel blessed that we get to carry the Trek torch and the best way of expressing that in story is to acknowledge the parallel world we are deviating from — a world whose sole ambassador just happens to be Mr. Spock. It would have been hubris for us to represent to the uninitiated that Khan was our idea and there was no one better to pop in briefly and say — "Hey, these guys are just doing their own spin on a bad guy that was around a long time before they came along." The minute we stop honoring, acknowledging and representing the original Trek, we are bound to lose sight of the enormous gift we have been given in sustaining it."

Why Did Carol Marcus Have A British Accent When Her Father Has An American One?

"Well, she explains that at length. But we cut it out because the story wanted to explain the torpedoes... not the fact that Marcus was stationed in London when Carol was a little girl. We did shoot this and I'm sure it will be available on the BluRay for all interested in the under-discussed area of British accents and why they are awesome because British people are cooler than we are."

What's Next For The Franchise?

"Well... the honest truth is, yes — seeds — indeed SPACE seeds — have been sown for what comes next. But after spending four years of not telling who our bad guy was this time around, we're certainly not in a position to say anything about the plot of the next movie, should we be lucky enough to do another. So BOO-YA, bone withheld!!!"

When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

"This is made clear in the movie"

Yep. As was 99% of stuff from Lost and Prometheus that people didn't understand. I don't get it. Do people just want to hate Damon Lindelof? I think he's fantastic.

Count me in the group that didn't enjoy the "homage" or Spock Prime's appearance. I just didn't think Spock Prime warranted inclusion. It didn't make sense for the flow of the story. It stopped the movie completely dead, especially considering that they were in a completely different scenario. How was his advice supposed to help? The torpedo trick isn't how they defeated Khan before. I would also like these films to be a little more original than showing us stuff we've already seen. I felt that part of the great thing about creating a new universe was that they could do new stuff, not new versions of old stuff. If that's all they wanted to do, they could have just skipped having an alternate timeline, called the ENTIRE endeavor a remake, and still gotten away with doing whatever they wanted.

And the plot holes and contrivances are just killing me with this series. It's like they're just daring you to like the movie despite them.

Regardless of whether or not people would know Kirk is coming back in the next movie, they should have left him dead. It was too quick and easy after his awesome death scene. Another thing, why did they demand that Spock capture Khan alive when they had 72 people who's blood had the same properties? And if Khan's blood can basically resurrect someone, they could have killed him, brought him back, and then he would wake up again. The movie was awesome beyond those few points.

I've been a loooong time fan of Star Trek and while I DO love this "alternate" timeline series and did enjoy Into Darkness -- I had some problems that overwhelmed my love for it like 2009's Trek.

1. KHAN NOONIEN SINGH -- that is NOT a European name! That is definitively a middle eastern/ Asian name. I loved Benedict's performance -- but the obviousness of this little thing bothered the hell out of me. Even if you wanted to go with how things are different within this timeline because of Nero -- what would that have to do with Khan's ethinicity?
Ricardo Montalban was latin -- but could pass for the ethnic background of the character -- unless Starfleet and/or Admiral Marcus decided to give THIS Khan a skin pigmentation and facial reconstruction change -- Khan's ethnic background should not have been so different in this timeline.

2. KIRK -- Granted that in this timeline, Kirk is different because he lost the presence of his father, again because of Nero's interference. So, what is it that JJ and company are trying to say? That a man raised by his mother would turn out to be a wuss? Cause I see this Kirk getting his butt handed to him over and over again from almost everyone!
Anyone who knows Star Trek, knows that Captain Kirk was a legend when it came to fisticuffs.
So -- what gives with this "alternate" Kirk?

@McGee makes a good point though. Benedict never said his full name. All he said was Khan. Everyone (including Spock Prime) just assumed it was Khan Noonien Singh.

So how are photon torpedoes without a fuel supply supposed to make it from the edge of the neutral zone to Kronos? I mean, if things are being CLEARLY explained, I don't see how the admiral could just overlook something like a missing propulsion component.

Too similar to wrath of khan: GTFO THATS THE WHOLE POINT CAUSE ITS REWRITING HISTORY. IT WAS AWESOME.

It's like going to see superman. we all know whats gonna happen, and who the bad guy is and where supes comes from, and who his dad is and what happens to his dad, and who he works with, and who his boss is, and where his secret hideout is...need i go on??? Is it gonna be too similar to EVERY SINGLE THING we've ever read or seen about superman? YES. If its not broke, dont fix it.

PS: probably the reason Khan was smaller was he was frozen for like a billion years, and he hasn't been conscious enough to get that big yet. Simply put, Ricardo is bigger casue he's older that Cumberbatch at this point. Plus history has been changed, so events that make him big might not happen.

Hypothetically, if this Khan IS Khan Noonien Singh (which I do not believe), how does the USS Kelvin blowing up affect it at all in the first place? Khan and his soldiers were placed in the Botany Bay in the 1990's, which is HUNDREDS of years before Kirk is born anyways. So it should be the exact same Khan, no question. Here are my theories, however.

- They never actually mentioned that this Khan and his soldiers were on the Botany Bay, nor were they placed on their ship in the Eugenics War. This was all unspecified. So, it might be a different character and soldiers all together, just a giant coincidence that this characters name was Khan. It could've just been another set of super soldiers. The Botany Bay and Khan Noonien Singh could still be out there.

- This actually COULD be the Botany Bay crew, but Khan Noonien Singh is still in one of those tubes. Perhaps this nuKhan has taken his superior officer's identity in a attempt to have a more powerful name and one that people could rally behind, because I believe Khan was known as a hero in the Eugenics War. Sure, its not Khan Noonien Singh, but he's taken the idea of that for himself and using it.

Just my two cents.

If you paid attention to what McCoy said about waking up the others you know why they couldn't use any of the 72 on ice.

Of course he's "the" Khan. Lindelof just basically said so in the interview.

Although I find it interesting (to put it mildly) that he says it would have taken more energy to avoid doing Khan than to do him. Really? Out of a whole universe, they couldn't give us something new? I guess not.

I haven't been following the comments to closely but did anyone cry racist when they cast Khan with a white actor? Just wondering considering the outcry of Donald Glover Spider-Man, Idris Elba Heimdall, Micheal Clark Duncan Kingpin, Billy Dee Williams Harvey Dent, etc.

Ain't many Brits with names like "Noonien Singh"...

Marvel/Disney Nick Fury was based off the Ultimate Marvel Universe (Earth-1610). Don't know why Marvel Studios decided on putting him on films which is clearly based on Earth-616. Maybe to bank on Sam Jackson's big name.

Next up, Khan will take over the USS Cordobra and line the Captain's chair with rich, Corinthian leather. He'll kidnap Scottie and his little friend, who will betray Scotty and stand beside Khan. He will be known as Tattoo.
