NEWS: The Phantom Menace Beats Out The Dark Knight at the Box Office

It's Official! The Phantom Menace has dethroned the highly-beloved film, booting it out of it's precious place as one of the top 10 highest grossing films of all time! Take the jump for the full details.

Thanks to BoxOfficeMojo, the day that we all saw coming since Josh Wilding's recent article, The Dark Knight has been overthrown by the infamous prequel. Not only has it surpassed it, it booted it out of the top ten highest grossing films of all time list.

At $1,004,013,029, Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace clearly outdoes The Dark Knight's $1,001,921,825. This means that, for the first time in 4 years, a superhero film is not in the Top 10 highest grossing films. Perhaps The Avengers, The Amazing Spider-Man, or even TDK's sequel will reclaim said spot?

This is very disappointing news. I'm serious.

I mean its not like The Dark Knight didn't have a rerelease. They rereleased it in January 2009 in IMAX to make hype for the oscar nomination it never received.

Eat that Nolanites! This is the funniest thing I've read all day! Phantom Menace was complete garbage. Possibly the worst movie ever just because of the hype and many years of anticipation.

People once again bashing Nolan, not surprising. This just clearly shows people are more attracted to spectacle than substance. The Dark Knight is still at 11. The Star Wars name alone is enough to go even higher on the list, no matter what installment it is. The only ones worth it on this list is Return of the King and Toy Story 3. This list shows what made most money, that doesn't equate quality.

I don't think the movie deserves it...buuuuuut just for the sake of pissing off the Nolanites:

All I will say is people are stupid, this shouldn't have made a penny from a re-release. George Lucas must be laughing - he put glitter on a turd and people brought it. Is this all it takes! Plus not sure why people are slagging off the Dark Knight, this is a blow for all CBM's that this rubbish is that high, plus you can't really say anything unless your fav film is any of the top ten.

the re-release of the phantom meance has grossed roughly $40,000,000,anyone know how much it costs to convert a film to 3d.

You know that TDK will get re-released in 3D at some point... It's bound to happen, and guess what... It'll leap frog from the Phantom Menshit... I mean Menace.

There's irony for you! Suck it haters!

As for me, I love them both so I really can't complain. Batman is still the baddest, but Star Wars deserves its share of praise!

Tajin88 - 2/27/2012, 7:02 AM
It doesnt matter if a high praised movie gets a lil bit more than TDK, what matters is there isnt another CBM on that list, especially no Marvel Movie. If one Marvel Movie deserves it, then Blade only.
batfan175
batfan175 - 2/27/2012, 7:39 AM
this is just an indicator that many people spent money to watch The Phantom Menace. It does not tell us how many were satisfied. I'm sure more people were enjoying TDK than there were people enjoying the phantom Menace. Get people to pay on the way out instead and you'll see the difference.

RidiculousFanBoyDemands - 2/27/2012, 8:28 AM
Ehh, so a movie needed to be released twice, and in 3D to beat it out. It should have an asterisk next to it, like any movie that has been released in theaters more than once.

It's still funny to see all the overly sensitive people who can't stand it when somebody likes a Chris Nolan film. Keep on keeping guys, you know I certainly love to talk about something I apparently hate so much. Jealous much?

RFBD- haha once again you nailed it..... the thing is is these comments are honestly being treated as if Chris Nolan's movies are like Joel Schumacher's.... Cant wait till TDKR shits on all of you.
Garmanbozia
Garmanbozia - 2/27/2012, 12:03 PM
And a 3D movie ticket costs more than a regular movie ticket...I'm sure that if WB decided to re-release The Dark Knight they would most likely destroy most of these movie records, and especially if they re-released it prior to the release of Rises just to create some hype (will most likely not happen). And let's convert TDK into 3D just for fun to make more cash.
Squaremaster316
Squaremaster316 - 2/27/2012, 3:09 PM
Except TDK didn't have a re-release, just an expansion of theatres.

TPM's original release was given a longer theatrical run than TDK (261 days vs 231).

Of course, the typical Marvel-tards will jump at the chance to bash the film, just like the idiots at Marvel's IMDB boards, BKB, KAL, etc.
