STAR TREK: PRODIGY Canceled By Paramount+; Will Also Be Removed From Service In Cost-Saving Measure

Paramount+ has canceled the youth-focused animated series Star Trek: Prodigy but will continue post-production as producer CBS Studios shops both seasons to a new buyer.

Paramount+ has canceled its kids-focused animated series Star Trek: Prodigy, and like most streaming services will attempt to save some money by completely removing it from the platform. As we've seen with others like DIsney+ and Warner Bros. Discovery, removing Star Trek: Prodigy will allow Paramount+ to take a tax write-off for the "underperforming series."

The move to cancel Star Trek: Prodigy comes as a bit of a surprise as the series was renewed for a second season back in November 2021. If there's some good news to take away from this, it's that post-production will be completed on Season 2 as producer CBS Studios looks to shop both seasons to a new buyer. So it's quite possible that Star Trek: Prodigy winds up on a different streaming platform altogether.

Star Trek: Prodigy was one of four different shows canceled by Paramount+ in the past week, joining the likes of Grease: Rise of the Pink LadiesQueen of the Universe and The Game.

“The Paramount+ series Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies, Star Trek: Prodigy, Queen of the Universe and The Game have completed their runs on Paramount+ and will not be returning to the service,” a Paramount+ spokesperson said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. “We want to extend our thanks to our tremendously talented cast and crew and our producing partners for their passionate work and dedication on these programs, and we wish them all the best on their future endeavors.”

Star Trek: Prodigy debuted in 2021 as part of executive producer Alex Kurtzman's expanded Star Trek Universe with the goal of introducing a younger audience to the franchise. The first season received glowing reviews and was praised for its sleek 3D animation, action-packed moments, and though-provoking stories. Despite being intended for younger audiences, even many adults found enjoyment in the series.

Developed by Emmy Award-winners Kevin and Dan Hageman ("Trollhunters" and "Ninjago") the CG-animated series STAR TREK: PRODIGY is the first "Star Trek" series aimed at younger audiences and will follow a motley crew of young aliens who must figure out how to work together while navigating a greater galaxy, in search for a better future. These six young outcasts know nothing about the ship they have commandeered - a first in the history of the Star Trek Franchise - but over the course of their adventures together, they will each be introduced to Starfleet and the ideals it represents

Following this news, series creators s Dan and Kevin Hagemen took to social media to share their optimism for the future of the series as CBS shops it around.

Paramount+ remains home to a plethora of Star Trek content, including the animated comedy series Star Trek: Lower Decks, the hit series Star Trek Discovery (now in its final season) and its spin-off Strange New Worlds.

I recently subscribed to Paramount + and too be honest I am really starting to wonder why. Aside from this Star Trek shit and a few random shows there is hardly any original content. There are some decent movies, but it's not enough to warrant a subscription.

@four20smoke - or old classic shows like Cheers and Frasier, there's a lot of RuPaul if you're into that lol

@bobevanz - you know, that was something my wife and I noticed too. He has taken over MTV. The other brand that just seemed random is the Smithsonian channel.
I'm not sure what they are trying to do with this service but it ain't working. I watched Yellow jackets, which went to shit in season 2 and I'll prolly do the Mission Impossible movies and after that it's bye bye.

@TheShellyMan - just be careful with that. Idk if its the same, but back in the day my dad ordered the holy shit a million channels cable box, but after a few months we couldn't afford it anymore so my dad called and canceled the service and wanted our old cheap cable box back, but they said we could keep the box in case we decide to upgrade again but they would just turn off access to the expensive channels, but for about a year we still had the expensive channels and my dad still watched them until they finally shut them down a year later. But then the following month my dad got a MASSIVE bill for having used the expensive service still that whole year, and he tried to fight it, got a lawyer but ended up having to pay them all of it back in payments or it would ruin his credit.

1883, 1923 and Strange New Worlds

It’s a Prequel World and I’m enjoying them! SNW is out of this park fantastic.

So this is the star trek article we get, but not weekly ones for Stange New Worlds? We get one for every Disney show, what's the problem? Ohh.. because this site only relies, on the Disney Fandom for clicks and comments

@bobevanz - Disney is inherently more popular just based on simple numbers, when compared to WB/DC and other Fandoms, but it's not an excuse. It shows you only want money imo

@bobevanz - It's more like the site runs on user contributions, and the users, for whatever reason, don't tend to watch or cover the Star Trek shows. At least the ones that like to write and contribute...

I'm with @MattIsForReal, I would probably cover it myself if I watched them, but other than the films, I haven't watched any of the Star Trek shows since Next Generation in the 90s.

I'm sure if it was a Star Trek film, they would be all over it.

Should have been Lower Decks.

Paying residuals to shows’ staff based on total subscribers to the service is simply bullshit. It makes much more sense to pay them based on actual views. Otherwise why have shows on your service at all?

I have never watched this but boy do I hate this trend of just erasing art from existance for tax purposes. Nothing could ever be so bad to deserve this.

I love Star Trek and tried to watch this.

Doesn't feel like ST to me... More like Star Wars.

SNW Season 2 started and is just amazing. I never watched this Star Trek cartoon seems like it’s target audience is 5 year old kids? This is the mistake. Star Wars was meant for kids not Star Trek.

@CAPTAINPINKEYE - First of all the mantra of Star Trek is infinite diversity in infinite combinations that in itself means Star Trek is for everyone, so you are definitely just wrong there. Second why wouldn't a show that allows access to the fandom at an earlier age a good thing? Third "I never watched this Star Trek cartoon"-tell me you jump to conclusions without telling me you jump to conclusions, yeah that sounds very Starfleet to me smh
