Not only has the domestic box office broken records in 2016, but Disney has as well! Universal Pictures was the domestic champion in 2015 with
$2.4 billion thanks to
Jurassic World and
Furious 7. However, another studio took the crown in 2016. Disney has emerged as the champion of the 2016 domestic box office and for the first time in history, Disney is the first and only studio to reach
$3 billion thanks to recent release
Rogue One: Star Wars Story, claiming 26.4% of the overall market share. Their 2016 total gross is about $750 million more than their 2015 gross. Second place was Warner Bros with only $1.9 billion and 16.7% of the overall market share.
2016 had a total of nine films making more than $300 million domestic, with five of them being Disney films, and three of those films grossed over $400 million! Those include
Captain America: Civil War ($408 million),
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story ($439 million), and
Finding Dory ($486 million).
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is projected to finish with $550-600 million overall.
It should be noted that this overall gross includes the $284 million Star Wars: The Force Awakens made in 2016. 2017 should be an interesting year since Universal and Warner Bros will provide a lot of competition for Disney for the domestic crown.
