Disney has had a great year at the box office with many of their movies going on to make lots of money. With the recent release of
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Disney has now surpassed a whopping total of
$7 billion at the global box office just this year alone. The previous record holder was Universal Pictures last year with
$6.89 billion.
$2.7 billion of that $7 billion figure comes from the domestic box office, which also beats Universal's
$2.4 billion from last year. Disney's grand success comes from their quality films that have received lots of great reception from both critics and audiences. This is all thanks to hits like
Zootopia (
$341 million domestic and $1.023 billion worldwide),
The Jungle Book (
$364 million domestic and $966 million worldwide),
Captain America: Civil War (
$408 million domestic and $1.153 billion worldwide),
Finding Dory (
$486 million domestic and $1.027 billion worldwide),
Doctor Strange (
$226 million domestic and $653 million worldwide),
Moana (
$162 million domestic and $282 million worldwide), and of course
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (
$155 million domestic and $290 million worldwide).
As you could see above, three Disney films have reached $1 billion worldwide. This number is expected to go up to four since
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is projected to make at least $500 million domestically and $1 billion worldwide. It is also worthy to note that $737 million of the $7 billion Disney made this year came as a result of the box office from
Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which was counted as 2016 gross despite being a 2015 release. Next year also looks to be a strong year for Disney with films such as
Beauty and the Beast,
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, and
Star Wars Episode VIII.
