GAME OF THRONES Showrunners Respond To James Mangold Directing STAR WARS Movie With Same Premise As Theirs

Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss were supposed to helm a Star Wars trilogy about the First Jedi and have opened up on Lucasfilm now tasking James Mangold to tell that story instead.

Lucasfilm announced plans for a new Star Wars trilogy from Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss in 2018. The HBO series' final season hadn't aired at that point, meaning excitement was at a high to see the duo travel from Westeros to a Galaxy Far, Far Away.

Like Rian Johnson's supposed trilogy, it never happened, and the duo parted ways with the studio in 2019 over creative differences. Don't feel too sorry for them, though, as they later signed a $200 million deal with Netflix which led to the recently launched 3 Body Problem.

Josh Horowitz (via SFFGazette.com) recently caught up with the filmmakers to discuss the series and asked how they feel about missing out on the opportunity to helm their own Star Wars trilogy (it was set to revolve around the Galaxy's First Jedi).

"I think we got relatively far story-wise with the first one," Weiss confirmed. "We had a basic roadmap for the other two. It was a shame. The truth is, our batting average on things conceived to things actually finished has never been tremendously high and there will always be ones that get away for various reasons. The ones that just aren't meant to be."

"It was sad that was one of them for us," he continued, "but as time goes on, you need to let go of those things because if you don't, you'll drive yourself completely crazy."

Horowitz then asked if there's any awkwardness over the fact Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is now helming a movie which will also travel back into the Star Wars franchise's past to tell the story of, you guessed it, the first Jedi.

Weiss responded to the question, but was clearly uncomfortable (there may indeed be some hard feelings towards Lucasfilm over that). "I love Jim. He's a great dude," he said. "All the best of luck to him."

Lucasfilm can't have been on board with what Benioff and Weiss came up with so the fact they've now enlisted the Logan director to tell a similar story has to sting.

Earlier this year, Benioff finally shed some light on the premise of their trilogy when he said, "We wanted to do The First Jedi. Basically how the Jedi Order came to be, why it came to be, the first lightsaber..."

"[Lucasfilm] ended up not wanting to do a First Jedi story," he continued. "We had a very specific story idea in mind, and ultimately they decided they didn’t want to do that. And we totally get it. It’s their company and their IP, but we weren’t the droids they were looking for."

They don’t deserve to get work ever again. I know how GoT ended is partially GRRM’s fault for not finishing his book, but they completely phoned the last two seasons in so they could get off the hook of their contract. Ghoulish “creatives.”

@Kurban - Sadly GRRM is definitely on that list. I think during the popularity of the show, he was getting tired and was hoping the series would conclude live action and for the books too. But then dnd gave those atrocious last two (yes S7 and S8) seasons and put him in a bind to conclude the story for the fans.

@Kurban - That's always been my main issue with the end of the show.

The quality wasn't really the issue for me, it's that the two of them seemed to have totally checked out when they got the Star Wars gig.

They wanted to go play with their new toy, and around that time they announced that the show was ending with 2 shorter seasons.

@Kurban - think they did a solid job with 3 Body Problem. The major issues I have with that show are issues I have with any Netflix originals these days. That's not on them

@Kurban - I haven't watched an episode of this, but is that Tyra Banks in the photo?

@harryba11zack - they did. But they also failed upwards and stumbled into $200 million contract

It'll probably sting even more when they watch the film and notice that's it's their ideas but expanded upon. I think for any writer/director that has to be a big kick in the pants. It seems to happen all the time too where the studio hires someone, develops the story with them, and then boots them out just to bring on someone new. I'd be heartbroken, especially if it was a franchise like Star Wars.

@RedFury - it could be that they were still interested in the premise but the specific story or take Benioff & Weiss had wasn’t working for Lucasfilm

Maybe Mangold was interested in doing something similar and was to their liking so they decided to revisit it.

@TheVisionary25 - yeah they probably didn't like where they were taking it and decided to move onto someone else. Either way I hope for their sake Mangold starts from scratch. I imagine it would be like someone else raising your child lol.

I bet Edgar Wright probably felt the same way with Ant-Man. I doubt he's ever even seen it.

@RedFury - yeah , I hope so too

That would suck as I can imagine.

Doing an origin story like this is tough. Whether these guys were directing it, or Mangold, this movie runs the risk of potentially turning off fans due to bad back story.

Think about when Lost started giving some of its backstory and some people thought the explanations were dumb.

Or how in Rings of Power season 1, Sauron is right under Galadriel’s nose and totally acting shady but nobody suspected him.

Or Alien fan’s distaste for what Prometheus did.

Or the Star Wars fans reaction to midichlorians.

Sometimes the mystery is preferable to a bad explanation.

Let’s see if they can pull this off in a satisfying way.

@mountainman - Yeah I'd say this movie has a much higher chance of being a let down than most Star Wars properties do. Doing the very first story of something so vast and old is going to be very difficult to please people with. If it's an even slightly off putting origin people are going to hate it. It's easy enough to move on from a bad trilogy, or bad show. But to mess up the origin of it all, is a death sentence. I do not envy Mangold on this one.

That sucks but maybe as they were developing it , Lucasfilm felt their specific take on the story wasn’t working for them so they parted ways and perhaps Mangold’s is (though I’m not sure if they even have a writer attached yet).

Granted , they could even use some of their ideas but in a different way so if that happens then I hope they get credit for it atleast.

Anyway , I like Mangold as a filmmaker (even if he can be a bit of a pretentious snob at times) and the premise is intriguing so I’m looking forward to seeing it!!.

Interesting. Is there really no Star Wars content out there, about the very first Jedi? Seems like a pretty obvious thing to explore. So I wonder if it was their unique idea, or was it something Lucasfilm would've done, regardless.

Well, the last Jedi was done, so I guess it's for the first one's story to be told.

Lucasfilm is a notorious place for directors, so I wouldn't be surprised if Mangold ends up leaving as well. Think it works better as a show or trilogy anyway though. Benioff & Weiss atleast got that right.

Three Body Problem is a solid show that will most likely get renewed though, so they'll get their share of sci-fi anyway. Just hope S2 isn't plagued by the same Netflix mandates as S1 or any other Original.

@bkmeijer1 - I don’t know about Mangold leaving

He did do Indiana Jones and The Dial of Destiny with Lucasfilm (which I liked) so it seems he can work well with them

@TheVisionary25 - that's fair. Think Star Wars is a different beast though, especially with such a big topic as the origin of the Jedi. Lucasfilm does wanna get that done their way I think
