LOGAN Director James Mangold Was Never Actually Developing A BOBA FETT Movie For Lucasfilm

Way back in 2018, it was reported that Logan director James Mangold had started actively developing a Boba Fett movie for Lucasfilm. Now, Kathleen Kennedy has finally set the record straight...

We know that Fantastic Four director Josh Trank got relatively close to making a Boba Fett movie, but the project fell apart shortly after his disastrous Marvel Comics adaptation hit theaters. Years later, it was reported that Logan helmer James Mangold was actively developing a movie starring the iconic bounty hunter for Lucasfilm, but it obviously never came to pass.

Now, after his reintroduction in The Mandalorian, the character will take centre stage in The Book of Boba Fett. Talking to Empire Magazine (via CBR), Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy addressed those reports about Mangold head on.

"There really was virtually no previous development [of a Boba Fett project]," she confirmed. "We never got very far with Josh, quite frankly, because we never developed anything specific with him. And Jim Mangold never worked on a Boba Fett story."

It was The Hollywood Reporter that first reported on Mangold's involvement, though he'd soon take to social media to seemingly deny it. Chances are the filmmaker had a general meeting with the studio about Boba Fett and other Star Wars characters, with the trade jumping the gun somewhat.

The important thing for fans of this Galaxy Far, Far Away is the fact Boba's story has continued, albeit on the small screen rather than in theaters. It feels like he has a bright future on Disney+, with The Book of Boba Fett potentially just the first of many future stories revolving around the anti-hero.

The Book of Boba Fett arrives on Disney+ on December 29. Stay tuned for updates.

It was reportedly going to be a prequel/origin movie anyway, so it's probably for the best that it was scrapped.

Studio spin these days. I swear they think they're governments or something. WB is the worst for it, though. But Disney's catching up.
It's only movies! Who cares if we all know that Todd Phillips didn't come up with the idea for Joker (doesn't even mention Scorcese's prior involvement on the wiki page) or that the director of the Super Pets movie came up with the idea of the Super Pets while in a pet store (honestly, there was an interview recently, that's what the spin is).

Movie fans love to find out all these behind the scenes details. But studios gotta spin and deny and cover up like they're the bad guys from the X-Files. Because they scared we'll find out they're not perfect or something. Lol, we know. Get over yourselves.

If Superman Lives was a recent production, WB would deny it ever happened and say that Nic Cage and Tim Burton never even got on the phone. And Jon Schnepp would have had nothing.
If it wasn't for the SnyderCut guys and Ray Fisher going on the warpath, they would still be denying Joss Whedon's involvement in the Justice League. Remember all that? Remember how he only rewrote a small percentage and directed a couple of unimportant pickups? Yeah, that was the spin.

They think we goldfish.

Now I don't know if James Mangold was involved in a Boba Fett movie or not, or how involved he was, but the point is that I can no longer trust the official word as being accurate or truthful anymore. And that's a very sad thing. It's movies! It's not a government conspiracy. What's the worst that can happen if we find out?

...rant over. I guess this has been on my mind a little.

A series nowadays is usually the best way to tell more stories, especially with a character like this one.

Maybe they should get James Mangold to direct an episode.
