STAR WARS: Disney World's Failed Galactic Starcruiser Hotel Looks Set To Cost Disney At Least $250 Million

Disney World's Galactic Starcruiser will take its final flight next month, and the company has now revealed that they're anticipating the failed endeavour's closure costume them upwards of $250 million.

When the news broke that Florida's Walt Disney World planned to open a Star Wars-themed hotel, there was a huge amount of excitement among fans of the franchise.

Unfortunately, "Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser" was met with mixed reviews right from the off. With trips starting at $4800 for two guests in a standard cabin and going upwards of $6000 for a family, it was immediately out of reach for the vast majority of Star Wars fans visiting the theme park.

Still, rooms did initially sell out and there were those who seemed to enjoy the experience of heading into a Galaxy Far, Far Away.

Bookings soon slowed and the hotel will close its doors this September, a rare failure for the House of Mouse when it comes to its theme park offerings. Once, there were plans for additional Starcruisers in Paris, Tokyo, and Anaheim to follow but Disney CEO Bob Iger made the decision to pull the plug on what's proved to be a costly failure.

How costly? According to interim CFO Kevin Lansberry (via SFFGazette.com), the company is anticipating taking a hit of $250 million in "accelerated depreciation," news which was broken quietly in Disney's third quarter report call earlier this week.

It's worth noting that revenue for the Disney Parks, Experiences and Products division increased 13% to $8.3 billion in the same quarter as the hotel's closure, so some might argue $250 million is chump change in the grand scheme of things. However, it remains an embarrassing failure.

There are many reasons why the Galactic Starcruiser didn't work, though it does feel like the project was somewhat rushed and not up to the usual standard of Disney's Imagineers. Blame for that has been laid at the feet of the ousted Bob Chapek as he was looking to increase profits across the board as quickly as possible, regardless of the product's quality (explaining what's happened to the MCU, to at least some extent).

Before Iger scrapped the hotel, a number of ideas were thrown around. Among them were "tours" of the facilities that would have given access to the bar, dinner show, and gift shop for an additional charge. They also considered retheming it to The Mandalorian, but the CEO said no.

Now, it remains unclear what will become of the building that has 100 hotel rooms in it (which, technically, now cost a cool $2.5 million each...).

@marvel72 - - Over piced and highlights Star Wars stuff 99.9% of fans have zero interest in.Disney Wars crap is never going to peak high interest...at some point Galaxy's Edge is going to fade(already has) because it highlights Disney Wars move than the most popular parts of Star Wars.

Disney simply has really stupid people in key positions.Only thing that can explain stupid move after stupid move after stupid move.

@marvel72 - It's not just Disney it's everything from Amusement Parks, Concerts, Sporting Events and creeping into Televison cable and subscription services. Families and the average person can't afford these prices.

@jst5 - Exactly they focus on the modern stuff that let's be honest no one is that interested in and not cater for the original trilogy fans that have the money to spend on this kind of thing.

Ticket prices for everything have gone up extremely high for Amusement Parks, Concerts, Sporting Events and creeping into Televison cable and subscription services. Families and the average person can't afford these prices.

While their Personal incomes stayed the same.

The real reason why everything is too expensive and losing customers.

Am I missing something!? If it cost 6000 dollars a night why don't they keep it and start charging 500 or less a night, why do they need to close it down. Lol it's allready built WTF 🤣 😂.

@Truoptimusprime - operating costs? lol .. they can't recuperate it fast enough or it's most likely a loss and there no profit

@abd00bie - 500 is better than nothing. At 500-1000 they would bd sold out everyday for the entire summer. Disney ran Star Wars into the ground 😆

They made the whole thing about the sequels, hoping it would eventually give more love to the sequels, instead it only got dragged down by them. Good, Disney needs to fail hard in order to learn any lesson out of it. Even then, they may be too hard headed.

A Star Wars themed hotel could have worked on a smaller level if it was in Las Vegas. They could have used similar concepts, but on a smaller level. Hotel floors could have been themed after popular lands with regular hotel rooms starting at $200/night and with suites starting at $500/night. The casino could have themed like Canto Bight and the bars and pool areas themed like Most Eisley Cantina. They could have had a high end stunt show featuring Star Wars characters in action as well.

"explaining what's happened to the MCU"

Chapek was following Igors plans. Even if he was the one that spun up all those series, Igor hasn't cancelled any of the ones that are going to bomb. Its pretty much public knowledge that a lot of this lies at the board level with investors all from big woke orgs.

That’s what happens when you make Star Wars look like a cheap Fifth Element knockoff. 🤷‍♂️

People keep blaming Chapek with no mention of Kathleen Kennedy. Lol. It was all her, this was her baby, the Disney Wars theme, no mention of OT Star Wars. Nobody wanted to stay in an over priced cramped hotel looking at new Star Wars everyone hated.

Everything has gotten more expensive. Concerts, flights, restaurants, etc. But the wealth divide means some families can afford anything, while others need to take out a second mortgage to go on vacation. Disney was banking on former to book rooms at this hotel, but their target market of major Star Wars fans is obviously in the other camp.

Yeah, the blame couldn't possibly be Kathleen Kennedy's when it was HER who demanded this boondoggle and the entire Galaxy's Edge be based on her failed movie characters that Star Wars fans hated, and not the original trilogy or even prequel characters that fans generally love or tolerate.

She overruled everyone, changing the theme of the entire park to her awful sequel trilogy characters at the 11th hour against everyone's advice.

But sure, it's not her fault.

They assumed that there were enough Star Wars fans that were wealthy enough to afford this.

Maybe it was wealthy people making these decisions who don't have a [frick]ing clue how thee things work.

I thought the Star Trek fans made more money than the SW fans (in general).
